Kilimanjaro from the plane. he Ethiopian Air arrives during the day, and gives a great view. (Sit on the left.)
Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)
Porters waiting for work at Kilimanjaro's Machame Gate
Our team
Everything is put on a scale. Max per porter is 15kg
The clients have their own shelter, so they don't get lost
Before picture
On the trail
The trail is built with this beautiful wood
Getting out of the clouds and some sun through the canopy, but still in the rain forest, with little view
First Dinner
Day 2: Breakfast
The porters taking down the tents
One of the famous unicycle-stretchers
And on our way
Lunch spot for the second day. The trail continues up and to the left, over the lip. The next camp is 20 minutes after the lip on the Shira Plateau
View from the tent! Meru in the background
Lots of constructions going on (new toilets in Shira II camp)
The New Shira Camp
The new record holder for "toilet with the best view!"
Dinner second day. Yummi
Third Day: Up to Lava Tower, then down to Barranco Camp. Vegetation is getting sparse
The Shira Plateau. If you come from Lemosho, you walk over this plateau for a long time. I think Machame is a much nicer route.
Up and up
Mount Meru
Not feeling “like a lion”
Lava Towers, still a long way to go: Lava tower is the small bump behind that first prominent ridge. Zoom in to see. Just below the first ridge is lunch spot, and then you climb the ridge, and go on and on...
Lunch on day 3
The way to the ridge...
...and the way after the ridge. This is Lava Tower
View from top of Lava Tower to Lava Tower Camp. I am on the left, carrying my yellow jacket (this is one of Arturo's pictures)
The power of the zoom of my Canon S3 combined with a bit of cropping
Climb high, sleep low. So let's go down to Barranco. Here I was nauseous and had a head ache.
Back down into the clouds.
Like out of a Tolkien book

Barranco Camp in the fog. Beautiful!
The famous Barranco Wall and the trail that winds it way up.
In the Barranco Wall
Nice Segment
Look at the people above us. It's quite steep...
Marcus, the assistant guide
I love this picture. It has a client, a guide carrying the eggs, a porter, and another guide with his cell phone. And Uhuru in the background.
The old porter trail is now closed because of rock fall
Relatively flat for a while
Down to Karranga Valley, the last source of water. The other side climbs up again...
Lunch on day 4
High above Karanga Hut, the lunch spot.
Barrafu Hut. Our base camp was right next to the ranger hut
Midnight Feeding before the climb.

Woohoo!
We all made it! Louis, Ernest, Arturo, Joaquin, Marcus
The Furtwangler Glacier
It's getting crowded
Rebmann Glacier
Slowly walking back down
The perfect shadow of Kilimanjaro. Top of Heim Glacier, and Mount Meru in the back.
View back to the summit
The northern Icefield and the Reusch Crater rim
Back to Stella Point. Crater on the left, Rebmann Glacier on the right.
Top of Africa
Almost back to base camp.
And on our way down the Mweka route
First Vegetation
The Heather are getting higher
And higher
Last Dinner
The crew
Day 6, down to Mweka Gate. Entering the rain forest.
The clients zig zag on the new trail, the porters go straight down on the old trail
We reached the 4WD road.
And, last few meters...
View from Stella Point. You can see the Kibo huts in the left and behind them Mawenzi peak and Barrafu camp on the right that leads to the right
Crater View from Stella Point
