Digging out the top layer of soil and laying stones underneath. Beginning the first layer of large rocks. Shot taken at about 10:30 AM.
Tom, Dmitri and Jan spent most of the morning moving huge rocks into that turn.
Dave directs the placement of one rock
Tom digs out a place for another rock while Jan, Dmitri and Matt watch.
The view up the hill from the trail project
Group moving a massive rock
"Jesse, I won't carry those rocks for you" (apologies to Carly Simon)
Here's the project area from the trail
Dmitri and Jan move a large rock into place
"Armoring" the slope with large rocks to prevent erosion
Nick lifted that one into place by himself (in his dreams...)
Dave and Rob lug another big rock
Pry bars, a sling and a LOT of helpers were needed for this huge rock
How the worksite looked at about 11:15
A couple of mountain bikers were riding thru and stopped to help
Training the next generation of trail maintenance workers.
Building trails is apparently more tiring (and dirtier) than mountain biking
Dmitri and Matt carefully place smaller stones to hold the big rocks in place
Pry bars and a lot of muscle were needed on this one
By about 1 PM most of the rocks were in place
Kids of all ages participated
Using pry bars to slide a large rock over the others that were stacked up
Dmitri and Dave check out the site at the end
After hauling three truckloads of dirt down to the site in wheelbarrows, here's how the project looked at 3:30
The rocky turn between the trees is now covered with dirt, and the trails is directed thru that passage between the trees. The former path to the left of the trees is now blocked.
The huge rocks are now covered with dirt.
This dirt covers about 20 linear feet of rocks stacked on end covering a drain line cut into the clay and filled with small stones.
The old trail continued straight; the new trail curves with barriers to keep people on the armored portion. All of the rocks are now covered with fill dirt.
PMBA members Marianna, Lance, Dmitri, Lou and Paul at 3:45 PM.
That's me.
Three days later, after two days of rain - some rocks are showing thru but most of the dirt is still in place
A view from above the trail - some rocks are showing after the rain, but most of the dirt is still in place
Most of the dirt covering these rocks has washed away, but the large sloped rock is still passible.
Most of the dirt remains in place
Horses have been there!
