2010 OAPIA Census Initiative

OAPIA is working with the U.S. Census Bureau, DC Counts, and community based organziations to educate and help community members fill out their Census forms. OAPIA began Census work in late 2009, and have since coordinated Census trainings for community organizations; coordinated Census information workshops to residents in Columbia Heights and Chinatown; coordinated Questionaire Assistance Centers at OAPIA, Asian Service Center, Chinatown Service Center, Asian American LEAD, Newcomers Service Center, and Vietnamese American Community Service Center; OAPIA engaged in a workshop and provided in-language assistance to help individuals complete the form. Background: The decennial Census is mandated by the United States Constitution; the population is enumerated every 10 years and the results are used to allocate Congressional seats (congressional apportionment), electoral votes, and government program funding. Some states or local jurisdictions also conduct local censuses.

Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) Vendor Meeting: 02.26.10

OAPIA coordinated a meeting between the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) and Asian roadway vending merchants to discuss the proposed roadway and street vending legislation. The meeting provided opportunity for the merchants to provide feedback (suggestions, comments, questions) about the proposed legislation.

12.18.09 "Share a Smile; Give a Toy" Toy Distribution Event

The Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) distributed more than 300 toys at its annual “Share a Smile, Give a Toy” toy distribution event for underprivileged children in the District of Columbia. OAPIA was adorned with festive decorations, and welcomed children, adults, friends, and families to celebrate the holiday season. Accompanied by adults, children received toys, enjoyed light refreshments, and watched a short holiday movie. During a brief program, Soohyun “Julie” Koo, Director of OAPIA, presented certificate of appreciations to Global Children’s Foundation, Korean American Grocers Association, McDonalds, and other generous donors who made this event a success.

12.3.09 Downtown Bid Momentum Award Ceremony

On December 4, 2009, the DC Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) received the Downtown Business Improvement District’s (BID) 2009 Momentum Award for Downtown Detail, for its role in restoring the iconic Chinatown Gateway Archway. The Momentum Awards recognize outstanding individual and organizational achievements in Downtown DC that contributes toward making the Downtown experience vibrant, inviting and smart. OAPIA played a key role in coordinating the Chinatown community to work with District Department of Transportation and the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities who initiated the “Chinatown Archway Restoration Project”.

11.13.09 Business Conference

On November 13, 2009, the DC Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) hosted a Small Business Conference for over 30 local entrepreneurs and small business owners. The goals of the Small Business Conference are to give small businesses the tools they need to start a business in the District and to help existing small businesses expand and develop. This year, the Small Business Conference entitled “Capitalizing in the Nation’s Capital” focused on highlighting new and existing government opportunities for businesses in the District. Discussion topics included: • The advantages of investing in the District; • Available government programs for DC business owners; • How to become a Certified Business Enterprise; and • How to win local and federal government contracts.

9.29.09 Archway Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, along with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) Director Gloria Nauden, and Office of Asian & Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) Director Julie Koo unveiled the newly-restored Friendship Arch in Chinatown with a ribbon cutting. As part of the District’s ongoing efforts to improve the streets and advance arts in the city, DCCAH oversaw major restoration to the 23 year-old structure. The Arch was built in 1986 to celebrate DC’s friendship with Beijing The original designer and architects of the arch, Alfred Liu and AEPA Architects and Engineers, P.C., provided the much needed facelift.

The dialogue was presented by Deepa Iyer, Executive Director of South Asian Americans Leading Together, and Francey Youngberg, Youngberg and Associates.

05/04/09 Mayor Adrian Fenty's Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration

On May 5, 2009, more than 500 District residents and visitors filled the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library for Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) Heritage Month celebration. APIA Heritage Month is celebrated in May to commemorate the contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States. The Mayor along with Soohyun Julie Koo, OAPIA’s Director, and David Chung, Chair, Mayor’s Commission on API Community Development, presented the Mayor’s Community Service Award to Becky Lee, Christian Oh, and Shirley Woo for their outstanding service to the District’s APIA community. Angie Goff, WUSA 9 traffic anchor, served as the mistress of ceremonies.

2/19/09 and 03/24/09 Emergency Preparedness Workshops

On February 19, 2009 and March 24, 2009 OAPIA in collaboration with Homeland Security Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) organized an Emergency Preparedness Workshop at the Gibson Plaza Apartments and at the Wah Luck House Apartments. Residents received detailed information and emergency tool kits in order to best prepare themselves and their families in the event of an emergency.

12/16/08 OAPIA Toy Drive

On Tuesday December 16th, 2008, OAPIA successfully coordinated its second “Share a smile, Give a Toy” toy drive. OAPIA distributed over 150 toys to low-income API children living in the DC area. The Global Children’s Foundation, McDonalds, and Target, generously donated to OAPIA to help make this event a success.

10/31/08 OAPIA Open House

OAPIA relocated to a new office! Located at 441 4th Street NW Suite 721 North, the new office now contains several newly built work stations that will soon house interns. With the relocation to a larger office space, OAPIA hopes to provide greater access to the community so that those in need of assistance will be able to receive it.

10/20/08 Chinatown Cultural Development Strategy Meeting

CCDS is a joint project with Office of Planning that aims to provide strategies and build support to revitalize DC’s Chinatown and position it as the region’s top destination for Chinese/Asian cultural businesses, programs, services, events and festivals. OAPIA has been working on this project with OP since July 2008.

06/13/08 Cultural Dialogue

On June 13, 2008, OAPIA organized a Cultural Dialogue, a cultural sensitivity training for DC employees to better serve the Asian and Pacific Islander community. This Cultural Dialogue shined light on the South Asian community. Speakers included, Rajbir Singh Datta, National Director of Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund; Nadia Firozvi, Staff Attorney at Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center; Deepa Iyer, Executive Director of South Asian Americans Leading Together; Mou Khan, Program Assistant at South Asian Americans Leading Together.

1/25/08 Youth Gang Prevention Workshop

On January 25, 2008, OAPIA worked with the Vietnamese American Community Service Center (VACSC) to host a workshop on youth gang prevention specifically targeting Asian and Pacific Islander youth in DC. Participants were also given information on alternative programs (e.g., MPD cadet programs and future career opportunities).

OAPIA's 20th Anniversary

Since its establishment in 1987, the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) has been the point of contact between the District’s 20,000 Asian and Pacific Islander (API) residents and government. It has worked with all levels of government to help ensure that the full range of District programs and services are accessible to the District’s API community for the past 20 years. This celebration will highlight OAPIA’s growth and achievement throughout its 20 years of service to the District’s API community.

Safety Workshop in 4D

With the rise in robberies targeting Chinese delivery men, the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) organized a safety workshop on Wednesday, January 23rd. Fifteen Chinese carry out restaurant workers and owners attended the workshop. 4D Commander Linda Brown, detectives, and officers as well as the Asian Liaison Unit provided safety measures that restaurant owners and staff can implement. OAPIA provided interpretation and referrals to other District government support services.

2007 Housing Workshop

On May 2, 2007, Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) worked with the Office of Human Rights, Chinatown Service Center, and the Chinatown Community Church and Housing Counseling Services for Housing Workshop with information on the Home Purchase Assistance Program, Tenant Rights, Emergency Rent Assistance Program. Participants also learned how to file a complaint with the Office of Human Rights.
