Intro Photo. Zoom in with the magnifying icon at the upper right. In addition to my other album here on Picasa, the following sites are referenced to many times: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm http://www.scrabo.com/santarositaintro.htm
1 (1) (meaning Scene 1, 1st photo) The opening scene in the movie, IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD shows Smiler Grogan passing a van and cars. It was filmed from level 5 of the 7 Level Hill above Palm Desert on Hwy 74.
1 (2) This and all the following photos are for the purpose of comparing filming locations in 1962 & 1963 to the same locations in 2009 - 2011.
1 (3) This curve is shown later in other scenes. In fact, various locations are used multiple times for different scenes.
1 (4) The upper portion of 7 Level Hill - above Palm Desert on Hwy 74.
1 (5)
2.1 (1) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, this scene is shown before the high view first scene of the main movie. Grogan is speeding along Level 4.
2.1 (2) Smiler is ready to approach Lennie's van when they round 'speed-up' curve (see next photo). Just 'move' the movie frame straight up for a fairly close match.
2.1 (3) The Google Earth image is of 'speed-up' curve. The last frame of this scene is of Grogan having completed his pass.
2.2 (1) After the long shots, here Smiler Grogan passes Dingy and Benjy going downhill in the middle of Level 3. It looks like it is a helicopter shot in the late afternoon. The Google Street View photo shows the same gully from ground level.
2.2 (2) Both Google Street View and the movie frame move downhill.
2.2 (3) Now you can see an obvious match with the white stripe in the road cut rocks.
2.2 (4) The movie frame is placed below the same rocks.
2.2 (5) Grogan passes the white striped rock and approaches the guard rail section.
2.3 (1) In a helicopter shot, Smiler's 57 Ford is catching up to another car on the curve between Levels 3 & 2. Note matching rocks in the yellow circles.
2.3 (2) Further along the curve.
2.3 (3) A Google Street View of the same section of the curve.
2.3 (4) The Google Street View is looking back uphill - the movie frame shows the cars going downhill. You can see the railing and the 'ramp' in both photos (1962 and 2010).
2.3 (5) This curve was used multiple times in the movie. Note the yellow circles.
2.3 (6) Look for matching landforms and rocks!
2.3 (7) One of the last frames in this scene shows matching points - see yellow circles and line.
2 (1) The next scene has Smiler Grogan passing a car on the upper end of Level 4 of 7 Level Hill in his 1957 Fairlane.
2 (2) Google Street View gives a good match for the movie shot. Some shots are hard to duplicate unless you have a high camera - like the Google Street view vehicles.
2 (3) If you park here, you can walk to see the location of photo 2 (4) - the next one.
2 (4) At the upper end of the passing lane portion of 7 Level Hill.
3 (1) Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante) passes his last car - the Finch's Imperial. Background photo taken in 2009. Heading north to "Smiler Grogan's point" (Mile 88).
3 (2) Next, the camera is positioned at "Smiler Grogan's point" looking back uphill to the south. The lighting in the August, 2010 photo makes it hard to see the hill features, but you can make them out if you look close.
3 (3) The background photo was taken on August 28, 2011.
3 (4) One of the last frames of this scene - the 57 Ford Fairlane completes the pass and exits the scene.......
3 (5) The onboard camera records one of the crash cars heading for the man-made ramp.
3 (6) Google Street View gives a slightly different perspective of the scene.
3 (7) Here is a closer view of the ramp. The lower photo shows it with quite a few prop bushes. The later upper photo show it mostly cleared off. It looks like they ran one or two of the other crash cars off to see what they would do before they invested a built-in camera. Note also that the time of day is different in each photo.
4.1 (1) The car with the dummy and camera inside gets ready to hit the guardrail and the ramp. Note that the car has a front license plate and that the time of day of the scene is not in the morning (note shadows on guardrail posts).
4.1 (2) The last frame in the extended scenes portion of the DVD clearly shows the dummy and the camera box inside the car as it leaves the ramp.
4.2 (1) A different crash car leaves the ramp off to one side. It is not the same car as in the last scene - note the guardrail post shadows - they show that this scene was filmed in the morning.
4.2 (2) A middle shot in this scene (used because it has background to compare) shows the car starting to roll. It will most likely be the same car used in the next scene. Note that it does not have a front license plate & note shadows on posts.
4.2 (3) Dave Woodman and I went back on August 28, 2011 to check out a few more angles. This photo may be closer to the camera position - if so, then Dave is standing just below the area where the 'rolling over' car hit.
4.2 (4) The 'rolling over' car would have been higher than my camera, but the white oval contains the crash site (a board is stuck in the rocks) and the movie camera location (you may be able to make out a vertical stick just above the board). The white arrow shows where Smiler died. It's amazing how distances are compressed when taking pictures. This and the previous photo make it seem like it is a very short distance between the camera and the crash site - but it's quite a distance away.
4.3 (1) One of the first frames of this scene shows the "rolling car crash" car after it left the ramp. It was filmed from a camera just below the level of the highway above the MPO (referred to later as the "most prominent outcrop"). Note skyline match.
4.3 (2) The car continues to roll over as it descends. The MPO is in the lower right-hand corner of the August, 2010 photo (shot in the morning). Read comments below.
4.3 (3) The last frame in the extended scenes potion of the DVD shows the car at its lowest point. It has not yet hit the ground. The 1962 and the 2010 photo match pretty well. The MPO is at the bottom - right/center, so this crash car landed BELOW the MPO.
4.3 (4) The lighting was better in August, 2011 when this photo was taken. It makes it easier to compare landforms behind the MPO (where the green bag is). If you line up the landforms, you can tell that the camera was in the same spot as in 1962. The two movie frames (the right one is from the extended scenes portion of the DVD) belong just before the movie frame in the previous photo.
4.4 (1) The next scene shows the same car that we saw earlier from the side heading for the ramp. Note license plate. The 1962 film shot is pasted on the 8/2010 photo showing where the car was ready to hit & where the camera was located down the hill.
4.4 (2) This crash car has just hit the ground ABOVE and to the left of the MPO. The 1962 photo is pasted on just below the same corresponding area in the 2010 photo (same scale).
4.4 (3) The camera location was near this position, but the positioning of the white circles containing matching rocks shows that it was off to the left. This photo was taken at an earlier date than the previous photo, but is included to show matching points.
4.4 (4) The 2010 photo at the top shows just a bit more area at its bottom, but you can compare where the road and various rocks are. Note the dummy and the camera box inside the car and that the posts show it was not filmed in the morning.
4.4 (5) The last frame of the extended scenes portion of the DVD is pasted on an August, 2010 photo so that the features match. The MPO is at right-center.
4.4 (6) The last frame in the 'regular movie' scene is pasted on an 8/2010 so you can easily compare various rocks.
4.5 (1) The 3rd car crashed landed to the EAST of the MPO. You can see where it hit by comparing the 5 circled rocks in the 1962 & 2010 photos. The car with the dummy hit just below the circle on the left.
4.5 (2) The car hit and twisted. The 1962 photo is pasted onto the 8/2010 photo so that the landforms closely match.
4.5 (3) Here, the 1962 & 2010 shots are matched in a different way - one below the other. The camera that filmed this crash was just below the road level.
4.5 (4) Shown here are 3 sets of matching rocks to note the placement of where the car was nearing its resting place.
4.5 (5) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, there is a wider view of the crash. These were filmed in the morning as noted by the shadows - the views are looking north. The lower photo was filmed from a higher camera location - from the road with the crane, or across the road on the hill.
4.5 (6) Here is some 'movie magic' performed for this scene: Note how they somehow 'doubled up' a portion of the movie frame. The lower red circled rocks are the real ones. I presume they did this to give the appearance of more dust.
4.5 (7) For the extended scenes view, they did not do their 'movie magic'!
5.1 (1) After the crash, the Finches and Crumps arrive first. I was not able to match the 1962 & the 8/2010 photos. Hopefully you can see the circled areas on the photos.
5.1 (2) The other 2 vehicles arrive at the top of Smiler's Hill. There are 6 circles on the photos. The red circles show the position of the 'head on' crash (upper circle) and the approximate camera location for that scene.
5.1 (3) Dave Woodman (who took the 8/2011 photo) and I went back to line up the rocks on the double hill. Note especially the the prominent rocks on the left hill and that the same Ocotillo (barely visible in the bottom left corner of the movie frame) is in both the 1962 and the 2011 photos. So if the camera was raised straight up (as with a platform), it would match.
5.2 (1) "Did you see the way he just sailed right out there?" The white lines on the 2010 photo above the 1962 shot show the area of the frame of the 1962 shot. The circles show matching rocks.
5.2 (2) "Will you look at that car!" There are 3 sets of circles to match.
5.3 (1) Here is what they saw - the bottom photo. It is the same shot as the middle photo, which is in the extended scenes portion of the DVD. The white circles show the top of a stick and a rock which are good reference points to show the difference in camera angles.
5.3 (2) This August, 2011 photo was taken from where the ramp was built, so it's a little west of where the group was viewing the crash from, but note the locations (with thin white lines) of various scenes that took place on Smiler's Hill.
5.4 (1) Lennie runs up to see what's happening.
5.4 (2) Mrs. Marcus doesn't care about what J Russell thinks. White circles show corresponding rocks.
6.1 (1) They head down the hill. The large rocks on the left are part of the MPO (most prominent outcrop) - certainly prominent in this side view shot. Most of the action on Smiler's Hill takes place around these rocks.
6.1 (2) The August, 2010 shot matches the 1962 movie shot. Did they use one of the 3 crash cars as this 'prop car'? They would have had to drag it to where it is in this shot.
6.2 (1) The 12/09 photo shows the rock where Jimmy Durante put his head on for 8 close-up 'cuts'. This shot (which can represent all 8 ) is not from the 1st cut, as you can see that Lennies hand is already on the rock.
6.3 (1) This August, 2011 photo shows the area where they run over to where Smiler is. Dave Woodman stands where the rear end of the 'prop car' was. The 1x4 in the foreground is where the 'rolling over car' hit. There is one white circle to compare. Obviously, the camera angle does not match the movie frame. But see next photo.........
6.3 (2) This photo shows the camera angle better. The white circles show corresponding rocks.
6.3 (3) They reach Grogan. Look carefully and you can see many matching rocks (and the Ocotillo and even some Agave plants). There are 3 more cuts of this camera view before he 'kicks the bucket", so this will represent them.
6.4 (1) There are 3 more cuts of this camera view that show Dingy, Benjy, and Melville looking on as they listen to Smiler. This 1962 movie photo is from the last cut that shows their reaction to Grogan's (temporary) death. White circles show matching rocks.
6.5 (1) Lenny and J Russell look on in the the last of 3 cuts of this camera angle.
6.6 (1) All of a sudden Grogan 'wakes up'. There are 4 sets of matching rocks within the white circles.
6.61 (1) Grogan asks for his Aunt Bell. Mickey Rooney tells Sid Caesar to "Tell him you're his Aunt Bell". Which he does. There is just one set of matching rocks shown in the white circles but you can match the big 'round' rock to the right of the 'prop car' & the rock where Mickey's hands are.
6.61 (2) Now that we've seen all the views of Grogan's car(s), it's fun to make more guesses.
6.61 (3) Since Google Earth has a better quality image, you can barely make out the landforms on Smiler's Hill. Hopefully you can read the comments on the photo.
6.7 (1) After he is comforted, he 'kicks the bucket'. There are 4 white lines that connect matching rocks.
6.8 (1) Benjy is startled. The August, 2010 photo matches pretty well with the 1962 movie shot, but should have been a trifle lower angle.
6.8 (2) They all look down. The same patterns on the rock that Dingy has his hands on, can be seen in 2010.
6.9 (1) The bucket goes down the hill. The frame of the movie that is shown, shows the bucket where the red circle is in the August, 2010 photo. Thin white circles compare other rocks.
6.91 (1) They all look at the 'meaning of the kicked bucket'. 2 sets of matching rocks in the white circles.
6.91 (2) It's interesting to compare the timing of the scenes. Note the shadows - especially on the man-made ramp; filmed at different times of the day. And the placement of Lennie's van up on the road, even though the camera angle is very close to the same.
6.92 (1) Detective Norman Fell reaches Grogan. Directly above the inserted movie shot, you can make out close to the same area of the scene.
6.92 (2) Directly below the inserted movie frame, can be seen matching rocks.
6.92 (3) Norman yells up to Nicholas Georgiade that Grogan is dead. The white line shows the bottom of the movie frame.
6.93 (1) The detective has to get J Russell's information, "anyway". "Who, me?" 3 sets of matching rocks to compare.
6.93 (2) Compare the filming timing of these 3 'in order' scenes.
6.94 (1) The group heads back up the hill. The white circles show matching points. August, 2010 photo taken from across the gully at the bottom of Smiler's Hill.
6.94 (2) Compare the rocks in the lower right corner of the movie frame to the rocks in the same corner of the August, 2011 photo.
7 (1) Back up on the road they all get back into their cars. The same rocks can be seen in both movie frames and the 2010 photo.
7 (2)
7 (3) Two movie frames showing Russell going back to his car. The same road cut is fairly accurately represented in the August, 2011 photo. Note white and yellow circles.
7 (4) They drive off as the inspector climbs back up. The camera location for this scene is near the one used in Scene 5.1. It was filmed later in the day, as seen by comparing the shadows on the guardrail. There is an Ocotillo plant in the foreground of the movie shot. What do you think that means as to where the camera was?
7 (5) The camera location for this scene is the same as in Scene 5.1. It was on a platform that was placed where the August 28, 2011 photo was taken from. Note the same Ocotillo and the lined-up rocks on the hill that are just above the forward part of Lennie's van.
8 (1) After leaving Smiler's Hill they try and drive at "a reasonable speed".
8 (2) After leaving Smiler's Hill.
8.1 (1) This is the 1st projected scene after they leave Smiler's Hill.
8.1 (2) The projected scene is downhill from the '17 different ways' discussion area, and just uphill from Scene 8 location.
8.1 (3) What is Mrs. Marcus saying? In the Google Street View photo, can you find the pinkish colored hill that is between Emmeline and J Russell?
8.1 (4) A bit further down the hill. (Move the movie frame straight up.)
8.1 (5) The white line outlines the movie frame's area on the Google Street View.
8.1 (6) The last frame of the projected scene is pasted onto the Google Street View photo in it's correct place.
8.2 (1) Melville is watching closely what the others are doing as they head downhill above the vista point at the top of 7 Level Hill.
8.2 (2) One of the last frames of this short scene. Google Street View is looking south.
8.2 (3) I upped the contrast of the movie shot so more details can be seen for comparison purposes.
8.3 (1) Now it's Dingy and Benjy's turn to talk. They are just downhill from the vista point. Note white circles.
8.3 (2) The upper Google Street View photo covers about the same area as the movie shot.
8.3 (3) The March, 2011 photo (taken early in the morning) shows a better angle of the section.
8.3 (4) Same movie frame as the last one with Google Street View. A bit further down - check out the rocks on the right side of the photos.
8.31 (1) There is very little projected image to see when Lennie is talking, but compare the areas in the colored circles. The movie frame in the upper left is from the extended scenes portion of the DVD.
8.31 (2) The rock outcrop that the camera vehicle passes can somewhat be patched together (top). The last frame of the scene in the extended scenes portion of the DVD (bottom) shows a bit more - move the image straight up. The angle is lower in the movie than with Google Street View.
8.31 (3) I did not get a photo of the outcrop from the same direction in March 2011, but you can imagine the camera vehicle moving in the direction that I am going, passing the outcrop in the center of the photo, and pointing the camera backward.
8.31 (4) The outcrop is a bit down the hill from the '17 different ways' discussion area (where the March, 2011 photo is taken from and which is covered in Scene 11). Compare the ridge line in the movie frame to the section of the ridge in the 2011 photo that matches (the movie frame is a smaller scale).
8.31 (5) When I went back to 7-Level Hill on August 28, 2011, I took a photo of the outcrop. The movie frame photo is not the same scale, but if you look above it, you'll see the same rocks.
8.4 (1) The scene switches back to the Finches. They are heading uphill a short distance above the vista point.
8.4 (2) The same road view in March, 2011.
8.4 (3) The Google Street View photo is in the shade of a cloud, so details are harder to see.
8.5 (1) The Crump's 2nd projected scene in this series has them going downhill on the same stretch of highway as Scene 8.1 (the Finches 1st projected scene).
8.5 (2) Note white circles.
8.5 (3) Move the movie frame straight up to get a pretty good match. Photo taken in March, 2011.
8.5 (4) "DONNNN'T LOOK!" Note road cut between their heads.
8.5 (5) Melville looks pleased.
8.6 (1) Now what are they talking about, as they drive (in a projected scene) downhill on the stretch just downhill from the vista point? Look carefully at the landforms just to the right of the van.
8.6 (2) The movie frame is pasted in it's correct position. The photo was taken in the early morning of March 3, 2011.
8.6 (3) Look especially just to the left of the van (and the corresponding 2011 rocks) and the white circles.
8.6 (4) One of the last frames of this projected scene. It appears that the sign post is almost in the same position - as it should be if it's a milepost.
8.7 (1) Back to Mrs Marcus and the Finches. They are on the same section as Dingy and Benjy, but going uphill - the opposite way. White circles match.
8.7 (2) Move the movie frame straight down - the photos are close to the same scale.
8.7 (3) Here is a Google Maps Street View showing the same section of Hwy.
8.7 (4) The rocks behind Dorothy's head and the area to the left of Milton's hat can be matched.
8.7 (5) See the yellow circles. This section of road was in shadow when I drove it, so I had to up the brightness and contrast to see details.
8.7 (6) The rocks near Dorothy's head are the same. 1962 and 2011. As in most of these shots, 'move' the movie frame to match - this time, straight up.
8.7 (7) Again, if you move the frame straight up, you'll see the same features.
8.7 (8) Same stretch - just move up the movie shot.
8.7 (9) The 2011 photo is taken from the exit from the vista point. Note yellow circles.
8.7 (10) Note the hills behind Russell's hat - they are the same as in the March 2011 photo.
8.7 (11) The middle mountains (behind Milton's hat) match, so you can see that there was a rocky outcrop where the vista point is today.
8.7 (12) Move the movie frame down and the hills will match.
8.7 (13) The sign is for the vista point coming up.
8.7 (14) One of the last frames on a March 3, 2011 photo. The next photo has the same movie frame with a Google Maps Street View.
8.7 (15) One of the last frames in the movie shows how far they went in this scene.
8.8 (1) The Crumps continue their discussion on the same section of Hwy 74 that they had in their last scene (Scene 8.5).
8.8 (2) Here is the same curve in March, 2011. Move the projected shot down to match.
8.8 (3) Melville's facial expressions are interesting, to say the least!
8.8 (4) If you move the frame up, you can match the hills that are to the left of Lennie's van.
8.8 (5) The guardrail in the Google Street View photo can be seen at the left of the movie frame.
8.8 (6) Same curve on March 3, 2011.
8.8 (7) One of the last frames in this scene - note it was filmed at Mile 86 on Highway 74.
8.9 (1) The last projected scene of the VW in this 'series' takes place a little downhill from previous scenes. (Scenes 8.1, 8.5, & 8.8), but quite a ways above their 'continued discussion' 'projected' sequences below the vista point.
8.9 (2) Both photos are near the same scale. March 2011 photo.
8.9 (3) Note white circles. Same movie frame (at the end of the scene) pasted on a Google Street View photo..
8.91 (1) The last projected scene before they speed up shows them where they were in Scene 8.4 - above the vista point.
8.91 (2) In this Google Street View photo, you can easily see comparison points.
8.91 (3) A March, 2011 photo shows the area of the movie shot, plus more.
8.91 (4) This is the last frame of this scene matched with Google Street View.
8.91 (5) "He's not that good of driver." So, J Russell speeds up. The same movie shot as the previous photo is placed on a March, 2011 photo. At the end of the segment, Mrs Marcus looks satisfied.
9.1 (1) The first shot of the first scene where they decide to speed up to see what will happen. It's the same curve as shown in photo 1 (3).
9.1 (2) 'Speed-up curve'.
9.1 (3)
9.1 (4)
9.2 (1) When Melville sees the Finches speed up, he's not surprised. Projected scene is above the vista point.
9.2 (2) He understands what the others are doing! This is .45 miles above the vista point. March, 2011: Early morning.
9.2 (3) In fact, he seems happy! The 'parking' area in the Google Street View is where you park for Scene 23 (16). https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/IAMMMMWLocations#5590692955091666002
9.3 (1) Dingy isn't surprised either. "HA HAA!"
9.3 (2) Dingy downshifts between the vista point and where the Melville noticed the speeding up.
9.3 (3) Mickey Rooney is ready for the challenge.
9.4 (1) Location: The studio - but you can barely make out that this was a 'projected' scene; look at the extreme right side of the movie frame.
9.5 (1) The next 'speeding up' scene is a high shot from level 6 of the hill. I had to rotate the May, 2010 photo to match the movie photo - the reason for the angled white strip on the left side.
9.5 (2) 'Speed Up' curve is on the extreme right side.
9.5 (3)
9.5 (4) The photo was taken from the general area of where you have to be for the camera location.
9.6 (1) The next scene shows the vehicles coming around the curve on the upper end of Level 2.
9.6 (2) A wider view of the Dec, 2009 photo showing the surrounding terrain.
9.6 (3) These photos are taken from the top of the road cut.
9.6 (4)
9.6 (5) A wider view.
9.6 (6) Here is the east end of Level 2. You can see where to park if you want to see this location.
10.1 (1) After a while of trying to speed up, the Finches decided they couldn't lose the others, so they began slowing down. Even Google Street View could not match this one. You would have to be in a tall vehicle looking backward to get it - the movie probably used their crane vehicle.
10.1 (2) This shows this location in relation to the '17 different ways' discussion area (seen later).
10.11 (1) J Russell realizes 'It's no good'. They are on Mile 86 - they are driving uphill - view is downhill.
10.11 (2) Same road cut (1962 and 2011).
10.11 (3) Emmeline doesn't feel good.
10.11 (4) Taken in the morning of March 3, 2011.
10.11 (5)
10.2 (1) They continue to slow down.
10.2 (2) They slow down to a crawl. They are at the top end of Level 1.
10.2 (3) The camera location for the slow down scene (top photo) was the same as for Scene 9.3 when the camera panned the whole length of Level 2 (bottom photo). Note that the same ocotillo is still there - just to the left of the Imperial's front fender.
10.3 (1) The high view scene of Lennie falling back was filmed again from Level 5 - the same as the opening scene.
10.31 (1) The Finches notice that Lennie begins to fall back.
10.31 (2) This is also on Mile 86.
10.31 (3) The hill behind the van in the movie shot is in the upper center of the Google Street View photo.
10.32 (1) Melville sees Lennie falling back. I am not positive that this is the section used for this projected shot; the background doesn't give conclusive evidence.
10.32 (2) Same section in March, 2011.
10.33 (1) Looking uphill just above the vista point. Compare the area in the white circles.
10.33 (2) On March 3, 2011 I was back on 74 and took this photo. It's right next to the vista point. It's not too easy to see the shapes on the background mountains - the lighting is completely different.
10.33 (3) Benjy is glad - he thinks there is something wrong with Lennie's van.
10.4 (1) Here they are driving very slow and they realize that Lennie is falling back.
10.4 (2) Google Street View
10.4 (3) Here is a May, 2010 view of this scene location. Note the circled rocks.
11.1 (1) Here is the spot at Mile 84/85 that Lennie pulls his van over.
11.1 (2) A slightly expanded view. Background photo was taken in 2009.
11.1 (3) Lennie gets out of his van and for some unexplained reason, walks around the corner. Note rocks circled and connected by lines.
11.1 (4) On August 28, 2011 Dave Woodman and I were back at the '17 different ways' location. The black oval is where Lennie's head is in the movie frame.
11.1 (5)
11.2 (1) He walks around a very dangerous curve. Upper photo taken in 2009. It wasn't easy getting this shot!
11.2 (2) Lennie meets the others. Rocks and hills are always there to match up scene locations.
11.3 (1) Taken from across the highway, the ambulance and a police car heading for Smiler's Point (we assume) approach the "17 different ways" discussion area. Photo taken in March, 2011.
11.3 (2) As the vehicles pass, the area comes into view. If you move the movie photo straight up, it will match the March, 2011 photo in the upper right corner. For Scene 11.5 (coming up) the camera must have been on their crane vehicle which probably was in the flat area of the upper left quadrant of the larger 2011 photo.
11.3 (3) Taken from across the highway, this scene shows the group discussing their '17 different ways' of dividing up the $350,000. Top photo taken in 2009.
11.31 (1) The police look back and report on the discussion as they head uphill near the end of Level 1.
11.31 (2) This is, of course, miles below the '17 different ways' discussion area - coming up soon.
11.31 (3) The curve in the distance is the one that connects Levels 1 and 2. Move the movie photo straight down and you will have a match.
11.31 (4) Note rock 'border' on the right side. This type of border made it easier to locate scenes.
11.31 (5) Near the end of the projected scene they get near where Scene 9.3 (and others) was filmed from. See comment below for this link: http://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/IAMMMMWLocations#5544600346829986306
11.4 (1) They have their '17 different ways' discussion. Here is a view looking south.
11.4 (2) The March, 2011 photo is a bit closer to a match than the previous photo. Compare the rocks between Dingy and Benjy's heads.
11.4 (3) Dingy and Benjy listen to the proposals. The rocks above Benjy's head, and the skyline, can be matched (1962 & August, 2010).
11.4 (4) "And that's tax-free money!". Looking east.
11.4 (5) "And it's every man - including the old bag - for himself." August, 2010 photo shows same rock outcrop and 'road-cut' (probably prepared specifically for the movie).
11.4 (6) They tilted the camera for this scene of them rushing to their vehicles.
11.41 (1) As a recap: Top left; Lennie doesn't get as much as anybody else: Top right; Another shot of Melville explaining that it's tax free! Background shot: Looking east in 2010.
11.41 (2) Melville is sure that the Finches and Dingy and Benjy are not going to declare the money (top photos). "And I'M not going to declare it!" (bottom left). "Everyone has to pay taxes!" (bottom right). Background photo: Looking south.
11.41 (3) Top left: "There were 8 of us there!". Top right: "We're not going to get anywhere if we continue to listen to this old bag!". Bottom left: "We've tried it 17 different ways". Bottom right: "So it's every man for himself!".
11.41 (4) Top left: "Okay, we all agree" that Mrs Marcus is an old bag. Top right: Even though Lennie changed his mind about the unfair split of the money, they all take off.
11.5 (1) They leave the parking area and head south (uphill) on Hwy 74 (Around mileposts 84/85).
11.5 (2) When you watch the scene on the extended scenes portion of the DVD, it's easy to see that they DID use the crane - the continuous filming has the angle changing. Note how you can see more of the road as the camera moves higher. The bottom right movie frame is from the 'main' movie.
12.1 (1) The first scene after they leave the '17 different ways' discussion area going uphill, they are going downhill around the curve that connects Level 3 to Level 2.
12.1 (2) The only place to park if you want to find the camera location for the next scene (12.11), is seen at the extreme left side of the August, 2010 photo.
12.1 (3) Matching rocks in the circles. To reach the referred to camera location for the next scene, you have to walk through this road-cut. It's not as bad as it looks!
12.1 (4) Without the double yellow lines in the road, I guess they thought it was okay to pass around this blind curve.
12.1 (5) The camera location for Scene 12.11 is on the hill in the upper center of the 2010 photo. Can you find any matching rocks and landforms?
12.1 (6) The last frame of this scene.
12.1 (7) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, this scene goes further around the curve.
12.1 (8) The background photos were taken on March 3, 2011.
12.1 (9) This is one of the last frames of the scene.
12.11 (1) The scene switches from a road shot to the hill. To get here, you walk through the road-cut, then go uphill behind the sign.
12.11 (2) Same shot in 1962 & August, 2010.
12.11 (3) They enter Level 2 which was used in more scenes. If you moved the movie shot straight up, it would match up pretty well.
12.2 (1) The next scene is where they come around 'Migrant Truck' curve - so named because this curve appears in that scene as well. It will have the Scene number 13. Background photo taken in May, 2010.
12.2 (2) In August, 2010 I thought I could get a better match than the previous photo, but I don't think so.
12.2 (3) The police are parked at the spot that this May, 2010 photo was taken from. Can't park there any more.
12.3 (1) Without access to a helicopter, I had to use Google Earth to match this scene. The camera location note on the photo should read 'SCENE 12.11'.
12.3 (2) With some tilting of the Google Earth image, you can match the scene.
12.4 (1) This scene has them going around the curve from Level 2 to Level 1.
12.4 (2) Google Street View shows location and direction of the camera.
12.4 (3) August, 2010 and 1962. They are now on Level 1.
12.4 (4)
12.41 (1) Monica tries to get the map as they go around the curve at the lower end of Level 2 (same as at the end of Scene 9.3 and the police looking back and...). Background photo taken in August, 2010.
12.41 (2) There are a couple of rocks to compare.
12.41 (3) One of the last frames of the sequence. Movie photo placed below the same area in Google Street View photo.
12.5 (1) The next shot has them at the top of Level 2 (the same location as Scene 9.3) heading downhill.
12.5 (2)
12.5 (3) Google Street View shot.
12.5 (4) Photo 9.3 (6) was taken from the top of the hill that disappears into the upper right of the photos. The car in the 9.3 (6) photo is parked just off to the left of these photos. See: http://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/IAMMMMWLocations#5482987226718476930
12.5 (5) The last shot of the scene on the extended portion of the DVD.
12.6 (1) The VW tries to pass on the same corner as in the last scene - 12.5 (3 & 4) - at the east end of Level 2 - going east.
12.6 (2) The August, 2010 photo (lower) shows where the black car was parked in Scene 9.3 (6).
12.61 (1) The VW is still behind the van above 'Migrant Curve' on Level 1.
12.61 (2) One of the last frames of this scene shows Benjy & Dingy still behind the van just as they are entering 'Migrant Curve' (Where the migrant truck is forced off the road - shown in Scene 13).
12.62 (1) The VW makes the pass around a curve about 1/2 way through Level 1 - above 'Migrant Curve'.
12.62 (2) Further around the bend.
12.62 (3) "You're gonna lose your license Ding". After the pass, the projected background scene is on the straightaway just below the last photo - right where it should be!. Looking uphill on this Level 1, the photo shows the prominent Level 2 road-cut just above the sign.
12.7 (1) The group is heading west near the top of Level 1. Camera locations (of the movie & the August, 2010 photo) were at the west end of Level 2 - not too far from 12.11 scene camera location - see link for a reminder: http://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/IAMMMMWLocations#5515263645368275970
12.7 (2) The movie frame is inserted into the 2010 photo in its correct position. Note the black sign referred to in Scene 12.62 (3). http://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/IAMMMMWLocations#5516109475183354882
12.8 (1) Mrs. Marcus orders J Russell to pass - they are, again, at the west (upper) end of Level 2.
12.8 (2)
12.8 (3)
12.8 (4) At the lower end of Level 2 again. The top of the road-cut behind them is where the camera was for Scene 9.3. You can see the same Ocotillo at the right side of the movie frame extending into the 2010 photo!
12.8 (5) The white circles show where the black car was in Scene 9.3 (6).
12.81 (1) This was a difficult one to match - note the outcrop above (behind) the Crump's station wagon in the movie shot. It is not there in August of 2010.
12.81 (2) The upper left photo is taken from the next scene, but is here to show that they were filmed in the same general location. All 3 photos contain a specific spot that matches. A key is comparing the 2-peaked mountain. Try it.
12.81 (3) If you move the movie frame up a little less than 1/2 it's height, you can match the landforms (in the upper left corner of the movie frame).
12.81 (4) At the bottom of 7 Level Hill.
12.82 (1) The first frame of the next scene was filmed right where the migrant truck drove off the road (see Scene 13).
12.82 (2) At the right side of the movie frame, you can now make out the outcrop that is shown in 12.81 (1) - where the Finches are beginning to try and pass the van. It's gone in 2010.
12.82 (3) The car that is being run off the road looks like the same car that Spencer Tracy (Culpepper) used as his police car.
12.82 (4) The parking area to the left of the 74 sign is where to park if you want to explore where the migrant truck crashed. Again, note the outcrop in front of the van that's missing in 2010.
12.82 (5) The last frame of the scene.
12.9 (1) The Finches' still haven't made the pass. But they are back up the hill at "migrant curve". The movie frame is inserted into an August, 2010 photo.
12.9 (2) The curve in the guardrail is easy to compare in this and following photos.
12.9 (3) The background is an April, 2009 photo. The migrant truck went off the road off to the left of the photo. See Scene 13.
12.9 (4) The last frame in this scene in the 'main' movie.
12.9 (5) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, the scene is carried on down the hill to the outcrop that was identified in Scene photo 12.81 (1). The 'outcrop' is to the left of the VW in the bottom right movie photo. It is now a parking area.
12.9 (6) Next, the migrant truck is seen rounding 'migrant curve'. Almost the same as Scene 12.9. The next photo is what they saw!.....
12.91 (1) The group is heading back UPHILL at 'migrant curve'. The migrant truck drove off the highway right in front of my truck.
12.91 (2) The movie frame is inserted in an August, 2010 photo.
12.92 (1) This was filmed just above 'migrant curve'. Nick Stewart's truck is ready to be run off the road.
12.921 (1) This scene is in the extended scenes portion of the DVD. It was filmed above 'Migrant curve'. The straightaway that is coming into view on the right side of the photos is the same one where Benjy told Ding that he's going to lose his license [Scene 12.62 (3)].
12.921 (2) They are just above 'Migrant curve' here. The same spot as 2 photos ago (12.92 (1).
12.921 (3) This guardrail is the one that is at 'Migrant curve'.
13 (1) Here is just one photo that represents the Migrant Truck crash. There are 4 sequences in the movie. This one was taken from the 2nd sequence. Lower photo was taken in 2009.
13 (2) Here a Google Earth photo of the middle section of the first level of 7 Level Hill.
13.1 (1) This photo was taken from the parking area shown in the previous photo (2010).
13.1 (2) The background photo (2010) was taken from where the upper white circle is in the previous photo.
13.1 (3) You can easily compare the rocks on the right side of the photos.
13.1 (4) This background photo was taken in 2009 from a slightly lower point. I used it instead of the more precise photo because the terrain is easier compare and there was a bush in front of the views I wanted looking sideways across the hill.
13.1 (5) The truck is heading down the smaller gully on the left side of the 2009 photo.
13.1 (6) The gully that the truck is headed down is in the center of the 2009 photo.
13.1 (7) Almost the same background shot - different movie frame.
13.1 (8) You can see that the 2009 photo is slightly off by looking at the line-up of: (1) the large black rock in the left center; (2) the medium rock just above it; and (3) the almost vertical gully/rill in the cliff on the other side of the river bed.
13.1 (9) This is a comparison photo from the white circled (2010) location in 13.1 (1). You can see that the position of the 3 items in the previous photo line up. The big black rock is partially hidden behind a bush.
13.1 (10) The last frame of the first sequence in the extended scenes portion of the DVD shows a pretty good match up - the movie angle was a bit lower, but there are still plenty of points to match up. I moved the movie frame to the left so you can see some foreground.
13.2 (1) This extended scenes frame is the first one in the 2nd sequence.
13.2 (2) The first frame of the 2nd sequence in the movie.
13.2 (3)
13.2 (4) The camera pans going down the hill.
13.2 (5)
13.2 (6) Note the match of the rocks in the cliff that are visible in front of and above the hood of the truck.
13.2 (7) The background photos were taken in May, 2010. 'Move' the movie frame straight up.
13.2 (8) The scene in the extended scenes portion of the DVD starts a bit earlier and ends a bit later than in the movie. Here is the last frame of the 2nd scene of the migrant truck crash.
13.2 (9) The 2nd scene is of the same descent as the 1st sequence, just a different camera location - the lower white circle. Maybe my pile of rocks (circled) is still there! The white dots show the 1st sequence - the yellow dots show the route of the 2nd sequence.
13.2 (10) Taken from the parking area, here is the entire hill in 2009. It shows the route of the migrant truck in the 1st and 2nd sequences. The white circles are the camera locations.
13.3 (1) The 3rd sequence has a moving camera - this is the 1st frame of the sequence in the extended portion of the DVD. The white circle shows the position of the truck. 2010 photo taken from the road.
13.3 (2) The 1st frame of the 3rd sequence in the movie. They must have used the crane to elevate the camera as they moved west along the road.
13.3 (3) The 2010 photo is not the correct camera position, but it shows the details of the track that the truck took.
13.3 (4) From the higher camera position of a Google Street View vehicle, you can see that the angle is better, but still not high enough. The white circle shows the position of the truck in the movie photo.
13.3 (5) The last frame of the 3rd movie sequence shows the truck exiting the gully, ready to enter onto the flat area.
13.4 (1) The camera position for the 4th sequence is at the west end of the flat area. The 1st frame of the 4th sequence is inserted onto a 2010 photo - matching the landforms and road.
13.4 (2) The migrant truck is ready to go over the edge of the flat area. The white rectangle matches closely the movie frame.
13.4 (3) If you move up the movie frame, it will match the 2010 photo.
13.4 (4) the 2010 photo angle is too high and to the left, but you can still make out the same rocks.
13.4 (5) When you compare the same rocks, you can see where the migrant truck ended up.
13.4 (6) The truck has stopped. There are 2 sets of rocks to match (white circles). It's easy to find more - especially in the foreground.
13.4 (7) Almost the same, but in this photo, the rocks in the foreground match better. Taken in March, 2011.
13.4 (8) The movie frame is pasted in the correct position on the March, 2011 landscape.
13.4 (9) There are 2 sets of rocks that are circled with yellow to compare in one the last frames of the migrant truck scene.
13.4 (10) Most of the route that the truck took is shown here. The 1st & 2nd camera positions are shown in the white circles. Since the 3rd camera is moving, it must have been on the road.
13.4 (11) The 4th sequence (and part of the 3rd) is shown here. I am standing in the general area of the camera position for the 4th sequence. 2009 photo taken from the parking area.
13.4 (12) Here is a Google Earth view of the crash site. Here is a link to Scene 12.82 (3): https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/IAMMMMWLocations#5516109886191355666
13.5 (1) Dave Woodman stands where the migrant truck went over the side. This and the following photos show a view that the truck's stunt drivers may have had as they went down the hill.
13.5 (2) The truck's hood would have blocked much of this view. The white line on the right is the route down. The white circle is about where the camera was for the 1st sequence (shown in the movie frame).
13.5 (3) The truck is heading down the 'gully' that is in the extreme lower right corner of the August, 2011 photo.
13.5 (4) From here, they would have gone in a straight line, heading to the top of the 'flat' area in the right center of the photo.
13.5 (5) Here is the view the driver would have had when he was at the location of the truck in the movie frame (from the 2nd sequence).
13.5 (6) A bit further down the 'ridge'.
13.5 (7) The 3rd sequence showed this frame. They will be driving over the edge that is in the center of the 2011 photo.
13.5 (8) Nearer the edge. The movie photo is from the extended portion of the DVD.
13.5 (9) The movie frame is from the 2nd sequence. Now the truck will go down the side (where the shadows are in the left center).
13.5 (10) The driver will now be looking down the gully and they will exit the gully onto the flat area in the upper center.
13.5 (11) Driving into the gully. The movie frame is from the 3rd sequence.
13.5 (12) As they are driving down the gully (3rd sequence), the view was of the flat area.
13.5 (13) Exiting the gully.
13.5 (14) In the 4th sequence they head over the side of the flat area.......
13.5 (15) .....and into the riverbed.
13.5 (16) They end their journey here. They could see the rock that is circled (thin white circle) in the movie frame and in the August, 2011 photo.
14.1 The next scene is the group turning left off of Ramon Road onto Bob Hope Drive. The following page is a great match up: http://members.cox.net/mkpl4/mmmmw/mwtoday.html#PS1
14.1 (2) As the camera pans at Bob Hope and Ramon, you can just make out the mountains at the right side of the Google Street photo.
14.2 (1) The next scene is a projected one that has the Crumps trying to find Valley Center on a map - they are on Bob Hope Drive heading north. You can make out 7-Level Hill in the 2010 photo.
14.2 (2) It looks like Melville was also looking at the wrong part of the map (Monica was looking in northern California). You can see that southern California was on the camera side of the map when it blew into his face. Google Street View looks south on Bob Hope Drive.
14.2 (3) Melville loses control of the car on the section of road shown in Google Maps Street View. Note matching mountains.
14.2 (4) The swerving car is seen from behind in the same area on Bob Hope Drive in this projected scene. By 1996, the west side of Bob Hope Drive at Gerald Ford and Dinah Shore Drives was being built up. The east side was still empty. See notes on photo.
14.2 (5) The August, 2011 photo was taken on Bob Hope Drive north of the movie filming section, but you can make out matching landforms in the background of the photos. Look carefully within the white circles.
14.2 (6) In the 1996 aerial Google Earth photo of Bob Hope Drive, you can barely make out matching landforms - see the matching white rectangles.
14.2 (7) Google Street View could not get a view from the same location as in the movie; there are large buildings in the way - you can see the shadow of one of them in the Street View photo. The white lines connect matching trees.
14.2 (8) The scene goes back to a view to the south. Gerry Chudleigh's site has this great match up by Joe Westerberg. http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm
14.2 (9) After Melville gets control of the car, he's 'had enough'. The Google Earth photo shows an expanded view of the location. See notes on photo.
14.3 (1) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, the group is shown approaching Hwy 62 from the north on Adobe Road, 29 Palms.
14.3 (2) The police are watching the scene from the NW corner of Adobe Rd and Hwy 62.
14.3 (3) Here is a better angle shot taken in March, 2011.
14.3 (4) Looking west on Hwy 62 at Adobe Road.
14.3 (5) In March, 2011, we got a better view of the scene. There is at least one building that is recognizable (the one behind the stoplight at the right).
15.1 (1) The next scene is the cars turning onto Colaw Road from Hwy 62 (at the west end of the 29 Palms airport).
15.1 (2) Background photo was taken in 2009.
15.1 (3) Background photo taken in 2010.
15.2 (1) The background photo is not at the same angle, but it's fun to be at the exact spot where the van was when it turned the corner and hit the back of the Imperial.
15.2 (2) Dave Woodman and I went back on August 29, 2011. Here comes Lennie on Hwy 62 while Mrs Marcus is ready to declare that 'nobody is going to get me up in the air'.
15.2 (3) This is the same movie frame as the first one in this scene (2 photos ago), but this time it's pasted on a 2011 photo that is very close to the correct camera location.
15.2 (4) Mrs Marcus getting 'up into the air'.
15.3 (1) The Plymouth kicks up dust on Colaw Road - scene looking SW. Background photo taken in 2009.
15.3 (2) Looking west you can make out a couple of matching buildings. The background photo does not cover the far right side of the movie frame, so the building on the right is the blurred one above the car in the movie shot.
15.3 (3) This scene has the last frame showing the Plymouth between the house and the telephone pole with the red VW right below the house (choking in dust).
15.3 (4) If Colaw Road was the right road used in the movie, then where was the pink house in the movie frame?
15.3 (5) Walk in a straight line to where it should be!
15.3 (6)
15.31 (1) This projected scene was filmed on Colaw Road. The two photos (1962 and 2010) are about the same scale. You can make out a couple of features that match.
15.31 (2) Same movie frame is pasted on a March, 2011 photo. You can easily see the chimney on top of the same house (on the right side of the movie photo and directly below it in the 2011 photo).
15.31 (3) Compare the mountains, telephone poles and a water tank. They are going the opposite direction on Colaw Road that they were going in the scene before this (15.3) and the scene after this (15.4).
15.31 (4) They are going south on Colaw Road and are nearing Hwy 62. You can now compare the shape of the hills to the right of Sid's head.
15.31 (5) Between the 2 Colaw Road scenes (almost identical and coming up next), this is the scene where Sid Caesar (Melville Crump) delivers one of his best lines.
15.4 (1) The first shot of the 2nd Colaw Road scene is the bottom photo inserted in the May, 2010 photo. The first shot of the 1st scene is at the top.
15.4 (2) The last frames of the 2 scenes show more differences. Note the positions of the VW and the Plymouth.
15.4 (3) Right after the Colaw Road scene2, this is seen. They got "Dirt in the carburetor".
15.5 (1) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, the van is shown pulling the Imperial back onto Hwy 62.
15.5 (2) After the "Dirt in the carburetor" scene, here is what is in the movie. The 29 Palms airport fence is in the background of the 2009 photo.
15.5 (3) Lennie complains that 'This is a little girl's bike'. The view is to the NNW. Besides the circled matching mountains, you can also compare the hills in the middle of the 2009 photo to the hills behind Mrs Marcus's hat.
15.5 (4) Lennie rides off on the "little girl's bike" - heading east on Hwy 62.
16.1 (1) After the dusty ride on Colaw Road, they drove into the entrance to the 29 Palms airport. Note the line-up of the telephone poles against the mountains in the background. 2009 photo.
16.2 (1) After Lennie rides off, the Finches flag down Lt. Col. J. Algernon Hawthorne at the same intersection of Hwy 62 and Colaw Road.
16.2 (2) The 2011 photo shows a section of Hwy 62 near Via Arenosa (where the next scene - 16.3 was filmed). It is about 1/4 mile west of Colaw. Look closely through the rear window of the Jeep in this projected scene. Compare it to the movie frame at the top.
16.2 (3) As they drive on Hwy 62 near Colaw, Col Hawthorne explains his occupation.
16.2 (4) Here is a Google Earth view of the Twentynine Palms airport area.
16.3 (1) Lennie hears a vehicle coming - he's a bit west of Colaw Road on Highway 62. This photo was posted on this album without the black circles - it looked pretty good, but......
16.3 (2) .....when you look east, it didn't match except for the close telephone pole on the left - note the positions of the far telephone poles against the mountains. This photo was also on the album without the black circles. So Dave Woodman and I went back on August 29th, 2011 to find the correct spot.
16.3 (3) So we found the right location a bit further west. Note that the dip in the road is still there.
16.3 (4) From the same position, the camera pans to the right. Lennie is disappointed.
16.3 (5) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, Lennie is seen getting back on his bike. As he passes the camera as it pans east, you notice houses. The 2011 photo was taken from the same spot as the previous 2.
16.3 (6) Now the correct telephone pole comes into view, matching the intersection point with the mountains. It seems that the old abandoned house in the 2011 photo was painted white in 1962!
16.3 (7) As you look east on Hwy 62, the telephone poles now look the same as in 1962. See black circles.
16.3 (8) Here is where the scene was filmed - about 3 times as far from Colaw Road as was presented earlier - sorry about that.
16.4 (1) The Crumps check out the bi-plane at the 29 Palms airport. Background photo was taken in 2010.
16.4 (2) Ben and Bobo prepare for the take off.
16.5 (1) This is the first glimpse of Ray and Irwin's garage. The Finches are discussing whether or not to give Lt Col Hawthorne a share of the money. You can see the upper scene (covered later in Scene 20) out the window in the lower picture. https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/ItSAMadMadMadMadWorld#5730582967976151394
16.5 (2) The background photo was taken in 2009 from the corner of Indian Hills Way and Hwy 74. The lower inserted photo is from the extended portion of the DVD. The police car is pulling out from what will become Starburst Drive.
16.6 (1) Lennie flags down Otto Meyer near where Bel Air Rd intersects with Hwy 74. The lower photo is from: http://members.cox.net/mkpl4/mmmmw/jwinters-62-09.jpg Mark closed down his site.
16.6 (2) Same scene from Google Street View.
16.7.1 (1) The next scene has the bi-plane taking off from the 29 Palms airport. Background photo is from 2009 and was taken from the entrance area of the airport.
16.7.1 (2) There are 4 sequences in the main movie. This is the end of the 1st one. The first 3 have a moving camera. Background photo is taken from between the airport terminal and Colaw Rd.
16.7.2 (1) The 2nd sequence was filmed near the entrance to the airport. The way to tell which area of the runway was used is to line up hill and mountain ridges in the background.
16.7.3 (1) The 3rd sequence was filmed between Colaw Rd and the terminal. Check out the peaks in the white circles to verify.
16.7.3 (2) In the background of these movie shots are the same mountain features - they are at the 29 Palms airport.
16.7.4 (1) The 4th sequence was filmed from the area where Colaw Rd meets Hwy 62. Background photo was taken from Colaw Rd (the dirt area in the foreground).
16.7.4 (2) The 2010 background photo was taken from Colaw Rd. Colaw Rd is near the west end of the runway.
16.7.5 (1) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD you can see the bi-plane heading in the opposite direction (toward Hwy 62), with a helicopter beginning to follow it (next photo). Stationary camera was at the entrance to the airport.
16.7.5 (2) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD you can see the bi-plane heading in the opposite direction (toward Hwy 62), with a helicopter beginning to follow it. Stationary camera was at the entrance to the airport.
17 (1) Back to Otto and Lennie: When he throws the bike you get a view to the west, which shows that this was filmed where the blowout took place (next scene). Note that the car is heading different directions. https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/ItSAMadMadMadMadWorld#5730582904015049250
17 (2) After Otto drives away, Lennie throws his bike then stomps on it.
18 (1) Here is the blowout scene location. Between Bel Air Rd and Homestead Rd on Hwy 74. Background photo - Dec, 2009.
18 (2) Compare the ridge line in the Google Street View photo with the 1962 photo.
18.1 (1) With the blown out tire, Otto pulls into Ray and Irwin's from the south. The blow out scene was filmed about 1/2 mile north! Background photo is at Indian Hills Way & Hwy 74 (2009).
19 (1) The Jeep is driving west on Varner Road about a mile north of E Ramon Road, when Mrs. Marcus remembers about where Sylvester is.
19 (2) Google Street view.
19 (3) The Jeep goes off the road at this location. If you move up the movie frame, the scenes match - August, 2010 and 1962.
19 (4) The shapes of the mountains in the background, on the left, are pretty clear.
20.1 (1) One of the first views of the gas station destruction scene is looking to the west where Lennie attacks Otto and his car. The white lines connect same points on the distant ridge.
20.1 (2) You can make out the same 3 points on the ridge, looking west from Indian Hills Way & Hwy 74. https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/ItSAMadMadMadMadWorld#5730582981290361618
20.1 (3) Compare the points in the circles.
20.2 (1) Looking to the east you can see further evidence that Ray & Irwin's was located at today's Indian Hills Way and Hwy 74.
20.2 (2) Today, this 'mall' is where Ray & Irwin's was.
20.3 (1) This was compared earlier, but with different photos. Looking NW from the location of Ray & Irwin's, you can still see ridges that match.
20.4 (1) Looking south to verify that the SE corner of Indian Hills Way & Hwy 74 is where Ray & Irwin's gas station was.
21.1 (1) After the 'Mrs Marcus makes Col Hawthorne drive his Jeep off the highway' scene (Scene 19), they stop to call Sylvester in Yucca Valley. I have my doubts about this one.
21.1 (2) If you move the movie frame (from the extended scenes portion of the DVD) straight up the mountains seem to match in the area just to the left of her hat. But others don't seem to. This is an area with Joshua Trees, although they were no doubt removed as the town grew.
21.1 (3) Two frames are pasted together to show all of the mountains visible in the scene. This is the only area I could find that is even close. Interesting possibility: The liquor store has the same type of white stone on it as the building where this scene was filmed. Perhaps the building in the movie scene was next door to it - IF this is the area.
21.1 (4) Dave Woodman and I went back to Yucca Valley on August 29th. I have been looking to the north, but Dave noticed a white rock building on the south side of Hwy 62. It was immediately recognizable. Dave put the same extended scene photos that were shown on 21.1(1) & 21.1(2) at the bottom of his photograph of the building.
21.1 (5) If you move the movie frame straight up, it will match. The mountains in the background are partially hidden by trees, but the next photo will show them better.
21.1 (6) The mountains are visible in Google Street View. The yellow circles are matching points. The red circle is where I was looking before. Note text on the photo.
21.1 (7) Look closely at the Google Maps photo and you can see the position of the Jeep in this scene. So probably the camera was where it is depicted on the photo.
21.1 (8) The building is now occupied by Stroker Construction and is the same as in the old advertisement. This building and the liquor store (previously mentioned) were built by the same person - they have the same white rock! Dave Woodman noticed that there are no telephone booths! Another prop!?
21.1 (9) If you move the movie frame straight up the height of the frame,, it matches - naturally the rocks match.
21.1 (10) This quick scene looks like it was filmed on Hwy 62 about 4 miles west of 29 Palms, looking west. The green sign says Bermuda Ave.
21.1.1 (1) Mrs. Marcus gets out because "if Sylvester's out, then everybody is out". The projected scene was filmed on Worsley Road - described in upcoming Scene 22 (top movie photo). Compare hills.
21.2 (1) Mrs Marcus gets out of the Jeep with the keys at Balsa & Hwy 62. Jack Benny stops to see if they need help. There is a small portion of the mountain ridge line to match.
21.2 (2) The keys are retrieved at the NW corner of Balsa Ave and Hwy 62 - now a shopping center. There is a good match on the mountains!
21.2 (3) Yucca Valley has grown since 1962! The mountains haven't changed though.
21.2 (4) After they get the keys, Russell and Col Hawthorne beg Mrs Marcus to get back in. There are more mountains to match in this view.
21.3 (1) At Kickapoo & 62. 'Surely I'll still get my 10%'. The upper movie frame is from the extended portion of the DVD. You can still see the building next to the gas station (circled).
21.3 (2) The dark brown buildings in the background (2011) were a tan color in 1962. You can also match the part of the ridge just to the left of Terry-Thomas's hat.
21.3 (3) Move the movie frame straight up and you can see the building across the street (a Dodge dealer today) and the mountain ridge match.
21.3 (4) As the Jeep drives away you get a glimpse of the buildings across the street - today a Dodge dealer. The quonset hut is still there too. Thanks to Joe Westerberg for reminding me that I skipped this one.
21.3 (5) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, you get a clear view of the building next door. Upper photo: March, 2011.
21.3 (6) Upper left: Mrs Marcus goes to a telephone booth - you can see the slanted roof building in the March 2011 photo as well. Upper right: She makes the call - you can see the same building in the background (tan in 1962 and dark brown in 2011). Lower left: 2 movie frames put together - note another telephone booth to the right of the tow truck. Lower right: In the extended scenes portion of the DVD you can see that the telephone booth was covered up.
21.3 (7) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD (Upper left & lower right photos), the telephone booth is uncovered, then covered. The sequence begins at the upper left, goes down, begins again at the upper right, then goes down.
21.4 (1)Back at the Balsa location, after the Jeep leaves, Lennie pulls up in the tow truck. Note hills to match just to the left of Mrs Marcus's hat. This scene's photos were taken in March, 2011.
21.4 (2) They leave the gas station at Kickapoo and head back to Balsa.
21.4 (3) The view is to the south as the Jeep turns around. Again note the hills in the background.
21.4 (4) Photos spliced together show more of a panoramic view.
21.4 (5) The Jeep makes the turn around and stops. On either side of the building in the March, 2011 photo, you can see mountains to match up. The white lines connect matching points.
21.4 (6) The view is back to the south. It looks like they were where the large building in the previous photo is. What was the line here..........something about "personal rancor"?
21.5 (1) The building in the background can be compared to show that it was the location where Mrs Marcus made a telephone call to Sylvester: Hwy 62 where Acoma Trail intersects from the south.
21.5 (2) Google Street View shows it a bit more accurately.
21.5 (3) Looking closely at where the building across the highway intersects with the ridge in the background, it seems that the camera angle should be from where Street View is. So in 1962 Acoma may not have existed!
21.5 (4) I went back on August 29th, 2011 to try and get a better take on where the camera location was. The front of the building across the street can almost be seen in its entirety as Lennie moves closer.
21.5 (5) The same Google Maps Street View photo as shown previously with more details. I believe that the building was added onto on the right side (See red circles). The photo at the bottom is 2 movie frames pasted together so that the whole building front can be seen.
21.5 (6) A bit of possible evidence that an addition was made to the building......note the structure on the top of the building as seen on Google Maps (Red circle). It is where the end of the building was in 1962 (bottom movie frame). Look closely at the details of the mountains and how they intersect and relate to the building. The yellow circle shows the camera position.
21.5 (7) When Mrs Marcus finally gets Sylvester on the phone, he's "workin". She tells him that she is in Plaster City. That place really exists - just further south near I-8.
21.5 (8) There seems to be only minor changes to the intersection of Acoma and Hwy 62. See dates of photos on the photo. The building across the street in the previous photos is circled in white. The yellow circle shows the probable position of the phone call.
22 (1) The second scene on Worsley Road is Phil passing the panning camera. The first glimpse of Worsley Road was Scene 21.1.1 (a projected scene).
22 (2) This was filmed in the northern section of Worsley Road: As the camera pans, you get this view to the northwest. The shadow of Phil's car can be seen at the extreme right of the movie photo.
22 (2.1) See text on Google Earth map photo.
22 (2.5) Otto sees something in front of him in this projected scene as he travels north on Worsley Road south of where the last scene was filmed, but north of where the next scene (next photo) was filmed.
22 (3) The next scene is where Mike flags down Phil's car. It was filmed south of where Pierson Blvd crosses Worsley Road.
22 (4) Probably because it was the main highway then, the Hwy 62 freeway wasn't there.
22 (5)
22 (6) The car leaves with a clear view of the scene location.
22.05 (1) The extended scenes portion of the DVD has this scene: After Otto picks up the miner, he is hesitant about turning off the highway. The projected scene is near the previous scene location on Worsley Road (Scene 22 (2.5)).
22.05 (2) The same movie frame is pasted in position on an August 29, 2011 photo.
22.05 (3) Mike is telling Phil to 'turn off here'.
22.05 (4) After Otto complains, the miner gets mad and.......
22.05 (5) .......pulls off the horn ring on Otto's car.
22.05 (6) Mike then apologizes. The location of this scene is this stretch south of the intersection of Worsley Road and Pierson Blvd.
22.1 (1) This scene is in the extended scenes portion of the DVD. Phil and Mike are turning off the highway to get to Mike's wife, who is sick and needs medicine. Filmed where Worsley Road passes under the power lines - near the southern end of Worsley Road.
22.1 (2) Looking NW
22.1 (3) This road doesn't go through now because Hwy 62 freeway blocks it off.
23 (1) The next place where Otto and the miner are seen is going down this 'road'. The white circle is the spot where the car is in the movie shot. But where is it?
23 (2) Here is the canyon from the north (top) and the east (bottom). The previous photo shows the area of the upper right 1/6th of the lower Google Earth photo.
23 (3) The car continues down the 'road' (which was built by the owner's father for the movie). The mine derrick was also built for the movie. The white rectangle shows the area covered by the movie frame.
23 (4) The white circle shows where the temporary derrick was. Look carefully for matching points in the yellow and red circles. The car in the movie is basically is going parallel to the bottom of the March, 2011 photo.
23 (5) This view from above shows the area in the movie frame. The camera would have been near the lower left corner of the 2011 photo. The 'junk' in the movie shot was in the area of the 2011 photo just to the right of the movie frame.
23 (6) Otto hits a rock and spills oil down the 'road'. The movie road is now a gully so I could not stand where the movie camera was (but close!)
23 (7) The movie frame is pasted in the correct position on today's landscape.
23 (8) Move the movie frame straight up and you'll have a match.
23 (9) The miner thanks Otto for the ride, heads up a small incline and goes to the shack (built for the movie). The remains of the man made object is not part of the shack, although it is very near to where the shack was. You can make out the bulldozed-for-the-movie 'ramp road' that Otto drives down later in this series.
23 (10) Otto turns around and tries to make it up the 'road'. There are quite a few landforms to compare - 1962 to 2011.
23 (11) The old flathead was really working as Otto fails to get enough traction.
23 (12) He backs down. The camera was on the 'platform' that the shack was on. Note white circles.
23 (13) Eddie is watching. The lower movie frame shows the same view as the 2011 photo. The upper movie photo is from the same camera as it panned.
23 (14) Though not pasted to match exactly, the movie frame shows the area that the car was is when the film was made 49 years ago.
23 (15) For $3, Eddie will show him "a better way out". They end up at the top of the hill above where the shack was. You can see the top of the hill access road prominently in the 2011 photo. Just a piece of it can be seen in the movie shot.
23 (16) Otto asks', "Down THERE?" This scene was shot back on Hwy 74 though. The camera was .46 miles above the vista point.
23 (17) Otto wonders about the situation. Note 2 sets of matching circles.
23 (17.5) The truck is parked where you can visit the location. The circle shows where the camera and Otto's car were. This spot was referred to in Scene 9.2.
23 (18) Back at the 'mine' in the canyon, the car is driven down the bulldozed-for-the-movie steep 'road'. Shot in the very late afternoon it looks like! 'Move' the movie frames down and left to match the 2011 photo.
23 (19) The movie crew moved the shack so it would appear that this was a different area. The upper movie frame is in it's correct spot, and the lower one will match if you 'move' it straight up.
23 (20) Otto makes the turn - move the 1962 frame straight up. It look as though that the promontory that I was standing on was where the camera was for the movie crew.
23 (21) The camera location for the 2011 photo was on the ramp road. Three rocks that are lined up can be seen in the movie frame. Compare circles.
23.1 (1) This photo and the next one are 'extras'. It is to show what appears to be a tube(?) that may have been used under the car that they shot oil from for this scene (see circle). The 2011 shot is down the gully/'road', but not at the correct angle.
23.1 (2) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, Otto is seen getting a running start to make it up the hill. The red dots show the route. The camera position for this scene was down and to the right of the circle (where the shack was).
23.1 (3) The 1958 TD24 International bulldozer that made the 'roads' for the movie and pulled around a trailer with the camera crew on it, still runs and is in the same area (See Mt San Jacinto in the upper-right corner of the background photo and lower left photo - also 2011). The yellow quadrilateral approximates the movie frame area.
25.1 (1) Lt Col Hawthorne's Jeep is heading east on Soledad Canyon Road.
25.1 (2) Getting ready to enter the tunnel from the west. Lower photo..........2010.
25.1 (3) Entering the tunnel.
25.2 (1) The tire emerges from the tunnel first - from the east end.
25.2 (2) The 3 wheeled Jeep heads up the cliff on the south side of the road. The white lines shows matching rocks that can be compared - 1962 to 2009.
25.2 (3) More matching rocks.
25.2 (4) The next photo after this one explains why the matching rock on the left seems to be in a different place on the cliff.
25.2 (5) The numbered rocks in the upper center correspond to the next photo.
25.2 (6) These rocks compare to the previous photo.
25.2 (7) This is a view the stunt driver may have had as he exited the tunnel. Begin at lower left and go clockwise.
25.2 (8) The upper montage was taken in April, 2010. It appears that I was too close to the tunnel to copy where the camera was in 1962. The white circles show matching rocks.
25.2 (9) So I went back in August, 2011 to try and find where the IAMMMMW camera was positioned. I tried to look closely at my photos that I brought with me, but I missed it again. I was in the road and perhaps that made me feel uneasy. Anyway, the camera location was between this location and the one shown in the previous photo.
25.3 (1) The Jeep is near the end of it's roll. By matching the mountains at the left of the movie frame to the 2010 photo (by moving it straight down) you can see that a lot of the hill was removed by the mining operation. The yellow circle shows the end of the hill in 1962. That would be about where the white circle is in the 2010 photo.
25.3 (2) This shows what was behind the dust in the the previous photo movie frame.
25.3 (3) The next scene at the Soledad Canyon tunnel is the fight.
25.3 (4) Today, you cannot get where the camera was. There is a fence that keeps you out of the area. But you can still make out the flat 'cut' in the hill in both photos and note the white circles.
25.3 (5) The white circles are matching points. The background photo was taken in April, 2010. The jeep in the lower left movie frame is probably where the fence is today.
25.3 (6) Russell Finch gets ready to charge.
25.3 (7) This is the last scene at the tunnel where background comparisons can be made.
25.3 (8) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, it appears that Milton has a stand-in for this sequence. Move up the frame and you'll see the matching landforms. Taken through the chain-link fence that surrounds the mining area.
26.1 (1) The next scene in the movie has Mrs Marcus rolling backwards from the south side of Pipes Wash on Hwy 247 about 5 miles north of Yucca Valley.
26.2 (1) Looking south on Hwy 247 from the bottom of Pipes Wash.
26.3 (1) At the bottom of Pipes Wash is where Ray and Irwin's tow truck finally stopped. Some of the Joshua Trees are probably the same ones.........they grow slowly. Note configuration of hillside in the background to confirm location.
26.4 (1) Sylvester is ready to fly through the air on Mesquite Springs Road as he crosses 2 Mile Road. 29 Palms.
26.4 (2) Dave Woodman and I went back in March, 2011 to see the location again - more accurate this time!
26.4 (3) As the Dodge flies through the air, you can still make out the mountains in the background.
26.4 (4) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, the Dodge is seen farther north on Mesquite Springs Rd.
26.4 (5) A Google Earth map of some locations in the Twentynine Palms area.
26.5 (1) There are 3 'cuts' of Sylvester 'coming to save' his mama. Here is the 1st. Looking north on Worsley Road north of where Power Line Road crosses. Movie photo pasted in the correct position onto a Google Street View photo.
26.5 (2) This is the 2nd sequence of this 'projected' scene. It was filmed at the same location as Scene 22.1. Worsley Road at Power Line Road. The same road sign seems to be there.
26.5 (3) Pasted on a May,2010 photo.
26.5 (4) A pretty good match of the background from Google Street View.
26.5 (5) Lower movie photo (from the extended scenes portion of the DVD) from Scene 22.1. Same stretch of road. Photos taken at the intersection of Power Line Road and Worsley Road.
26.5 (6) Here is the 'cut' of the 3rd sequence. The physical location of this is between the last two. The movie sequence 'location' is the last of the three.
26.5 (7) Here is the same curve in March, 2011. If you move the movie frame straight down, it will match.
27 (1) Back with Otto and Eddie: This scene was shot just south of Kernville on the east side of the river. See the following links to see more: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm http://members.cox.net/mkpl4/mmmmw/thumb.htm
27 (2) Otto and Eddie head into the Kern River from the east side. The November, 1962 movie frame matches the December, 2009 photo.
27 (3) See notes on photo.
27 (4) The left white line points to where the little boy was standing(?) The right white line points to where Otto crossed the river. Looking at the Google Earth photo, you can see that vehicles can get to this spot from the east side (toward the bottom of photo), but when I was there, a high clearance vehicle was needed. The west side of the river is private property.
27 (5) Otto walks out on the same side that he drove in. Eddie must still be waiting on the other side!
27 (6) In December, 2009 I located the Otto's car sinking scene in the Kernville area. Here are some notes. Read the top note, then look at the next photo.......
27 (7) The top 2009 photo shows the view of the river directly below the 'parking area': The bottom photo is from further north and you begin to lose sight of the bend in the river beyond which the crossing took place. You cannot actually see the stretch where Otto crossed - it is to the right of the sand bar that is visible at the bend. The hill on the left of the 2009 photos is private property.
27 (8) Yellow circle: Top photo in previous photo. White circle: Bottom photo in previous photo. Red circle: Camera location area for the movie scene. Gray rectangles: Otto's car as it sinks. Movie photo: Note shadow of camera on car as he crosses.
27 (9) The large tree on the upper right side of the photo (Dec, 2009) is the one just to the left of the red circle in the previous photo. In the center of the photo is the concrete structure that was referred to in 27 (4). The next photo is taken from the other side of the mentioned tree.
27 (10) Looking downstream from under the large tree. The camera locations area for the movie was near this spot, but looking across and upstream.
28 (1) Dingy & Benjy take off from Palm Springs airport. The movie frame is inserted in position onto a Google Earth photo.
28.1 (1) This scene is inserted in more than one spot, but basically, it's around the time of the Soledad Canyon tunnel scenes. After Jim Backus gets knocked out because he wanted an Old Fashion "the right way", Benjy loses control.
28.1 (2) These first couple of photos show the plane in control, because Tyler has not let Benjy take the controls.
28.1 (3) Once Tyler goes to the back of the plane to make his 3rd Old Fashion, Benjy loses control.
28.1 (4) The plane is flying SW over the mountains just south of Twentynine Palms. 'Move' the movie frame to the right a little bit and you'll see matching landforms.
28.1 (5) If you look just below the inserted movie frame, you'll see the same landmarks. All of these Google Earth photos clearly show the same landforms that are in the movie scene shots.
28.1 (6) I couldn't resist showing a lot of these views - it was a hard one to find.
28.1 (7) The Google Earth photos all cover more area than the movie shots.
28.1 (8) I did show one matching point in this photo comparison. There are a lot more if you look close! "HELLLLLLP!"
28.1 (9) Last one! The airplane would be approximately in the center of the Google Earth photo.
28.21 (1) The Crumps are being flown over what is now, the intersection of Hwy 73 & Newport Coast Drive. How can this be found when the landforms are barely recognizable? Yellow lines connect matching areas. See next photo.........
28.21 (2) In one of the earlier movie frames you can see some very large buildings (circled). Hangers? Blimp hangers. Google "blimp hangers in Los Angeles", and 'Tustin Blimp..' shows up - an area between 29 Palms and Long Beach.
28.21 (3) A 1963 aerial photo is compared to a 2011 Google aerial at the same scale. Can we find more evidence that this is the area shown in the background of the movie scene? Besides the rectangles and circles which show matching points, note the yellow dots - the same spot on the aerials. The red circles are the same new, correct locations....see next photo.
28.21 (4) With a BluRay frame, there is more area coverage and more detail. It is easier now to find matching landmarks. 'Move' the movie frame straight up on the 1994 Google Earth shot for a close match on the landscape that is on the lower half of the movie frame. The upper half does not match because the movie shot was a telephoto. So see a continuation of this scene in my other album: https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/ItSAMadMadMadMadWorld
28.21 (5) In the extended scenes portion of the DVD, there is this scene of the bi-plane flying over Santa Barbara. Wonder why they were filming there? Note the white circles.
28.21 (6) Also in the extended scenes there is this projected scene of them them flying over Long Beach. Note the 'notched' building that is circled. The Pike is coming into view in the upper right movie frame. Scene 41 covers that.
28.21 (7) They fly out over the water and the view behind them can be matched to a 1964 USGS map. There is a yellow circle (look close) and two connection lines of matching points.
28.3 (1) The first scene at the Rancho Conejo Airport (lower left) shows the airport getting ready for Dingy's and Benjy's landing. Note the notes on the photo.
28.3 (2) Driving on the 101 Ventura Freeway you can see the mountain from a different angle.
28.3 (3) A later movie frame of the scene is compared to a Google Earth photo. No more open space!
28.3 (4) The constructed- for- the -movie control tower 'projected' scene is placed onto a Google Earth photo in it's proper position.
28.3 (5) They are asking for Paul Ford's help as the plane is heading in their direction. Yellow lines show matching points in 1962 to 2010. There will be more Conejo shots coming up in their order...........
28.4 (1) ....But first, before they landed, there were other shots of the airplane flying. This was just one of them - in the area between today's John Wayne airport and Puente Hills. Scene 30, coming up, shows the airplane flying through a hanger.
28.5 (1) Back at Conejo, Col Wilberforce hasn't a clue. This 'projected' background scene is the same as Scene 28.3 (4).
28.5 (2) "What's with this cord!?" This photo compares three different years - 1961, 1962 (movie), and 1965.
28.5 (3) As Tyler Fitzgerald's plane heads into the airport for one of it's fly-by's, you can make out some features of the Rancho Conejo Airport. Yellow lines connect matching points. Yellow circle shows the 1961 area of the movie control tower. The tower is drawn on the 1965 aerial with a white rectangle. Make sure you see more at: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm
29.1 (.5) After the Kern River scene, there are some airplane scenes, then this location: The first of many scenes shot in the Agoura area.
29.1 (1) The tow truck is going east on Hwy 101. The camera was located at what was then (1962) Rondell Street.
29.1 (2) Rondell Street still exists, but not at this spot. Now it is Liberty Canyon Road going under the freeway. The road-cut is quite a bit wider, but you can still see matching landforms and trees.
29.1 (3) The next scene is Hawthorne and Finch in their rented 61 Chevy heading the same direction (east). But the camera is in a different location.
29.1 (4) As the camera pans, it looks directly across the highway. Directly above the movie shot, at the same scale in a 2010 photo, is the same hill configuration. The camera was at the side of 101, but the 2010 photo was taken from near Knotts' Corner (see following photos).
29.1 (5) The end of the scene has the 61 Chevy heading away from the camera which is at an intersection that no longer exists. It was a connection road between Hwy 101 and Agoura Road. Liberty Canyon Road is the next off-ramp in the 2010 photo.
29.1 (6) This is a Google Street View of the area with some explanation.
29.1 (7.1) The next scene is a projected scene that began just west of the previous scene. The hill on the right side of the photo is the one referred to on the previous photo.
29.1 (7.2) They are approaching the spot where the 'Knotts' corner' to Hwy 101 connection road was.
29.1 (7.3) You can see that the background is the same as a previous photo 29.1 (3). Compare the features on the road cut hill in the 2 movie frames. The 2010 photo shows the same hills.
29.1 (8) Sylvester is going in the opposite direction in the section of 101 that is between the 2 previous scenes. Liberty Canyon Road /Rondell Street is in the background.
29.1 (9) Right after the top photo scene, the 'projected' scene (bottom photo) is shown. It is the same spot. Note the white and red circles.
29.2 (1) The next road scene is Phil Silvers waving down Don Knotts at the corner of Agoura Road and a no-longer-existing connection road to Hwy 101. Called 'Knotts' Corner'.
29.2 (2) A different camera angle at the same intersection. You can see vestiges of the road that WAS there in 1962.
29.2 (3) After the 56 Ford convertible exits the scene off to the right, a helicopter appears out of the gully behind the first small rise. The background photos were taken in April, 2010.
29.3 (1) This is one of the first frames of the next road scene. It is a projected one that was filmed on a straight section of Hwy 101. The view is looking east, just east of the Lindero Canyon Road overpass.
29.3 (2) Phil Silvers' expressions in this scene are priceless. You can see on the Google Street View that this is at the overpass.
29.3 (3) At the end of the scene, they have gone a ways west. Lindero Canyon Road overpass is in the background.
29.3 (4) Unless you take a photo backwards from your vehicle in the westbound lanes, you cannot get a perfect angle. But it's still close in this photo that was taken in April, 2010, going east at the Lindero Canyon Road overpass.
29.3 (5) From the overpass, you can see the whole section of highway that was used for the scene. This is looking east in April, 2010.
29.4 (1) Phil Silvers directs Don Knotts to turn right into the Mobil Station at the corner of Cornell Road and Hwy 101 (today's Roadside Drive). The Mobil Station property is now the Wood Ranch Bar-B-Q and Grill. You can still see enough hills in the background to match the horizon.
29.4 (2) To see information on this building go to: http://agourahills.patch.com/articles/landmark-agoura-whizins-shopping-center
29.4 (3) Phil Silvers directs Don Knotts to go inside to make a phone call while he moves the car 'around in back'. The August, 2010 photo was taken from near this movie spot - in back of the Wood Ranch Bar-B-Q & Grill.
29.4 (4) The May, 2010 view was taken closer to Roadside Drive, but you can see the background a bit better. The red roofed building can be seen in 29.4 (2).
29.5 (1) In the next road scene, the tow truck heads north, then south (top photo), on Mulholland Drive, just north of Calabasas Road (The Motion Picture & Television Fund Hospital is in the background). Lower 2/3's of the photo is from website: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm
29.5 (2) The tow truck turns around in the intersection that is near the top center of the 1963 aerial of Calabasas. The 'movie' hospital in the previous photo is the large white area just above the movie frame.
29.5 (3) The tow truck, followed by a police car and joined by another, makes a u-turn in the intersection that is now the end of Mulholland Drive, Calabasas Road, Valley Circle Blvd., and Ave San Luis. Photo is from the website: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm Check it out if you haven't already.
29.6 (1) The tow truck turns around a tree on Agoura Road between Cornell Road (west) and Lewis Road (east). The May, 2010 photo and movie photo are looking west. The movie camera was probably just on the other side of the front telephone pole in the upper photo.
29.6 (2) Same location, but the 2010 photo was taken on the other side of the telephone pole in the previous photo.
29.7 (1) The last Hwy 101 scene was filmed just west of Chesebro Road - looking west. Google Street View photo.
29.7 (2) The upper 2010 photo was taken from the overpass of Palo Comado Canyon Road - a 'connection' between Chesebro Road on the north and south of the freeway.
29.7 (3)
29.8 (1) Milton Berle and Terry Thomas head west on Agoura Road (2010 and movie photo look east) between Knotts' Corner and Chesebro Road. Knotts' Corner is in the background.
29.8 (2) Background photo taken in August, 2010. Looking east on Agoura Road - Knotts' Corner in the background.
29.8 (3) The background photo was taken in May, 2010 and is near where the last photo was taken, but the movie frame is a later one.
29.8 (4) You can make out Hwy 101 in the background of both photos (2010 and 1962).
29.8.1 (1) We already saw in scene 29.5 that the tow truck made a u-turn at this intersection (having seen Sylvester go by in the opposite direction). This photo establishes the location of the next scene...........see next photo.
29.8.1 (2) Sylvester is seen crossing a bridge that was in the background of the previous photo - 4 scenes after the previous photo. It is hard to tell in this Google Street View photo, but look at the next one.
29.8.1 (3) You can now confirm that it is the same bridge - Valley Circle Blvd crossing over the Ventura Freeway. Note the white circles.
29.9 (1) Dick Shawn is heading east on Mulholland Hwy toward the intersection with Las Virgenes Road. Background photo is Google Street View.
29.9 (2)
29.9 (3) It's always nice to take your own photos, but many times Google Street View is better - especially when the camera is higher off the ground than you can get. This background photo was taken in April, 2010.
29.9 (4) Sylvester sees Russell heading the other way, so he turns around.
29.9 (5) This background photo is from December, 2009.
29.9 (6) White 3000's on location.
29.10 (1) The tow truck makes a turn onto Agoura Road from Rondell Street (which intersected with Hwy 101 in 1962). In the upper 2010 photo you can see that a parking lot is where Agoura Rd (Vendell Road today) was in 1962.
29.10 (2) The upper 2010 photo shows that some of the trees on the hill - and much of the hill itself - can still be identified. Note the skyline over the movie photo.
29.10 (3) This is a copy of part of a USGS map from 1967. The yellow circle shows the Y intersection of today's Agoura Road and Vendell Road. It is the intersection used in 2 of the scenes that follow (9.11 and 9.21).
29.10 (4) Google Maps view of the area today. The red dash line (Vendell today) was Agoura Road in 1962. It is featured in the next scene..............
29.11 (1) For the projection scene that comes right after the tow truck turning scene, they used the road they were turning onto - Agoura Road (today's Vendell Road shown in the 2010 shot of it's blocked-off east end).
29.11 (2) As the scene moves west you can continue to make comparisons of the background - note especially the telephone poles.
29.11 (3)
29.11 (4)
29.11 (5) Later, in scene 29.21, you will see how this spot was used in the scene where Sylvester in his Dodge was going nuts trying to get Hawthorne and Finch - they split apart just as they were going to hit the telephone pole on the right.
29.11 (6) You can still see the same big Oak tree on the right. December, 2009.
29.11 (7) They move down the straightaway of Agoura Road. A fence becomes visible on the right side of the movie photo - this will be referred to in the next scene (29.12).
29.11 (8) April. 2010.
29.11 (9) Near the end of this scene, you can make out, on the left side of the photos (2010 and 1962), the area where Sylvester runs the 61 Chevy off the road (the scene - 29.17 - where the Chevy is forced off the road and comes back down on the road - on the way to 'Knotts' Corner'). Confused? Stay tuned.
29.12 (1) In this scene, the 2 cars have passed the tow truck and are heading west on Agoura Road just east of 'Knotts' Corner'. This camera location would be near the one that shot the 1st Hwy 101 scene of the 'rented' blue 61 Chevy (29.1.)
29.12 (2) This scene was shot not too far east of where Chesebro Road intersects Agoura Road. 'Knotts' Corner' is just off to the right of the movie frame & to the right of the telephone pole in the 2010 photo.
29.12 (3) The Google Street View photo shows the same large oak tree.
29.12 (4) The white line connects the same oak tree, so you can see what the area looked like when the Google Street View photo was taken. It looked similar in May, 2010 when I was there. However...........
29.12 (5) In August, 2010, the entire area was being bulldozed. The white house was between the water truck and the tree above the truck. The blue Chevy in Scene 29.17 was driving below where this 2010 photo was taken - below the telephone poles.
29.13 (1) Who is that behind us? It's Sylvester going west on Agoura Road between Lewis Road and Cornell Road.
29.13 (2) After the cars (in a projection scene) round one curve, they enter this short straight-away that is the same as the one where the tow truck rounded an oak tree followed by a police car. That spot is just off to the left of the photos.
29.13 (3) The background photos in this series were shot in May, 2010. The oak tree that the tow truck 'rounded' would be near the car in the background of the 2010 photo. It is not there anymore.
29.13 (4) You can see the oak tree in the background of the 1962 movie shot. At the top in the center.
29.13 (5) "He's not normal". They round another curve that is just east of where they drive off the road (Scene 29.23) later in the movie.
29.13 (6) Another short straight-away on Agoura Road - looking east, traveling west.
29.13 (7) One of the last frames of this scene - on the straight-away that ends where Sylvester runs Hawthorne and Finch off the road (A later scene - 29.23).
29.14 (1) Sylvester approaches Finch & Hawthorne going east on Agoura Road, 2 curves east of Cornell Road. Note notch in hill in upper left.
29.14 (2) Same straightaway a bit further east.
29.14 (3) Google Street View gives a more accurate higher angle.
29.15 (1) The projected background is looking east on Agoura Road. Chesebro Road is at the top of the hill.
29.15 (2) Looking east from a little further west.
29.16 (1) A continuation of Scene 29.14 a little further east on Agoura Road. Sylvester will run Finch off the road (Scene 29.23) where the stop sign is in the distance (2010 photo) - you can make out the same telephone pole in the 2 photos (the one in the middle of the photos).
29.16 (2) Google Street View.
29.16 (3)
29.16 (4)
29.16 (5) At the end of this scene they pass the same tree that can be located in Scene 29.6 (left), and 2010 (top).
29.16.1 (1) Back on Agoura Road, west of Chesebro, a bit further down the hill - a continuation of Scene 29.15.
29.17(1) The next scene has Sylvester running Finch off Agoura Road in the same area as Scene 29.11, except that they are filmed from behind.
29.17 (2) The road cut is wider in 2010 - in 1962 the 61 Chevy had room to drive on a flat area below the telephone poles. Knotts' Corner is on the extreme left side of the photos.
29.17 (3) The telephone pole that the Chevy just misses in 1962 is no longer there in 2010 - but the tree is. A 1961 Valiant is seen at Knotts' Corner in the background.
29.17 (4) The last frame of the scene. Scene 29.19 will continue this scene.
29.18 (1) The next projected background scene is on the same Agoura Road section as Scene 29.13 (7). The telephone pole next to the sign in the August, 2010 photo can be matched to 1962 - just move the movie frame straight up.
29.18 (2)
29.18 (3) In Scene 29.23 (coming up later) Sylvester runs Hawthorne completely off the road at this spot - now it's a projected background scene.
29.19 (1) Here is a continuation of Scene 29.17 - going west on Agoura Road approaching Knotts' Corner. The white lines on the August, 2010 photo show the 1962 photo edges.
29.19 (2) I still don't know the name of the connection road taking off to the right in 1962.
29.19 (3) I was surprised the movie frame fit so well into the 2010 photo. This is one of the last frames of this scene.
29.19 (4) Scene 29.2 showed Phil Silvers flagging down Don Knotts at this corner - he was standing off to the right of the May, 2010 photo.
29.20 (1) A continuation of Scene 29.18 - again they are going west on Agoura Road.
29.20 (2) They are passing the same tree that was seen in other scenes (top photos). In the 2010 photo the tree is gone, but the telephone pole is still there.
29.20 (3) I couldn't resist showing this shot of Sylvester - the telephone poles line up.
29.20 (4) Near the end of the projected scene, they leave the straightaway and get closer to where they will run off the road......but first........
29.21 (1) They head for a telephone pole at Agoura & Vendell. Move down the top movie frame and you can match the pole on the right. In Scene 29.11 (lower photo), the angled oak tree was mentioned - it was there in May, 2010 - but gone in August. See also, Scene 29.12 (5).
29.21 (2) Google Street View gets the better vertical angle.
29.21 (3) Here is a view you'll get in a car as you approach Vendell Road - taken in April, 2010.
29.21 (4) Background photo taken in December, 2009.
29.21 (5) This is as close as a match as you can get with Google Street View. See the following for another good match: http://members.cox.net/mkpl4/mmmmw/thumb.htm
29.21 (6) You can see the shadow of the power lines (in the movie frame) that go to the prominent pole in the 2009 photo.
29.21 (7) You can just make out Vendell Road in these photos (1962 and May, 2010).
29.21 (8) Back on Agoura heading east.
29.21 (9) The old house is not there today (Taken Dec 2009), but the straightaway is.
29.21 (9.1) Nearing the end of the scene in the movie.
29.21 (9.2) One of the last frames in the extended portion of the DVD shows a larger view of the location.
29.22 (1) Switching back to a projected scene on Agoura Road, east of Cornell (looking east). The following Scene 29.23 takes place around the bend at the end of this straightaway. Background - May, 2010.
29.22 (2) The movie frame was able to be inserted very well into the August, 2010 photo.
29.22 (3) Sylvester gets back into the driver's seat as he goes around the curve. Note the 2 telephone poles in the center of the photos. Background - May, 2010.
29.22 (4) The last frame of the scene shows another matching telephone pole (the right one, lined up vertically). Background photo - August, 2010.
29.23 (1) Sylvester runs Hawthorne & Finch off Agoura Road at today's Vejar Drive. Look closely at the telephone poles on the left side of the road and the big tree behind the one by the cars. Background photo - May, 2010.
29.23 (2) Same movie frame - different background shot (April, 2010). The pole on the left in the movie is a side line that doesn't exist today.
29.23 (3) The shadow of the telephone pole on the left in the Google Street View photo can be seen below Sylvester's car. The pole by the big tree is at the right edge of the photos.
29.23 (4) Vejar Drive is on the left in the August, 2010 photo. See Gerry's site for more information on this scene: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm
29.23 (5) 3 movie frames of the scene are pasted on the April, 2010 photo. The white circles show the base of the same pole and the big tree can be seen in the 2 top movie frames.
29.23 (6) This was fun to make - not perfect, but close.
29.23 (7) In December, 2010, I was back to the spot they ran off the road. I got pretty near the camera angle.
29.23 (8) The big tree with the telephone pole in front is on the right side of the photos. Taken from the same 2010 camera position as the previous photo.
29.23 (9) I have no reason to believe that these are not the same telephone poles.
29.23 (10) The original gully has been changed to a concrete storm water 'wash'. I got got as low as possible to match the angle, but couldn't quite do it. You can make out the telephone pole, the big tree, and the much-changed bridge.
29.24 (1) "I've never seen anything like this! He ran him right off the road!" Filmed at the same place as Scene 29.6 (lower) - note large tree to the left of the policeman (upper) and above the tow truck (lower).
29.24 (2) Scene 29.23 took place at the end of the straightaway in front of the truck, and Scene 29.24 (and 29.6) was filmed on the straightaway behind the truck.
29.25 (1) Sylvester leaps at Russell on the bridge. The May, 2010 photo was shot from near the 3rd telephone pole (cable brace seen on the right). The original bridge was off to the left of the photo. Note gully on left of both photos. See more at: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm
29.25 (2) From this spot taken in December, 2010, you can see the 2nd telephone pole in both photos. If the telephone poles are the same, then the 1962 bridge was just a bit west of today's bridge - across from Vejar Drive.
29.25 (3) The gully behind Hawthorne's hat is probably the same one that extends down into the grassy area (probably partial fill dirt from the housing development) to the right of the house. Note the blue sky area in the upper left.
29.26 (1) Otto's car is seen coming up on the tow truck as they are going west on Agoura Road just east of Vejar Drive (in the background in the August, 2010 photo).
29.26 (2) Scene 29.22 (upper photo) was filmed (projected) on this stretch of Agoura Road as well. Again, note matching telephone poles.
29.26 (3) They've rounded the curve on the west end of the straightaway.
29.26 (4) What is Lennie saying here, as they near Cornell Road from the east?
29.26 (5) They've reached Cornell Road.
29.26 (6) Otto almost hits a station wagon at the intersection of Cornell and Agoura. Background photos taken in August, 2010.
29.26 (7) In the August, 2010 photo, if you turned left on Cornell, you'd soon get to Wood Ranch Bar-B-Q & Grill where Phil Silvers & Don Knotts drove into the Mobil Station.
29.26 (8) In the movie, the next scene (29.26.1) is inserted right after this frame. But first we'll finish this location.....Agoura Road - west of Cornell.
29.26 (9) It is near this spot that the next scene (29.26.1) was inserted. Same bridge and pole.
29.26 (9.1) "Someone you know?", asks Hawthorne of Lennie in this last scene (in the movie) on Agoura Road.
29.26.1 (1) Otto is driving east on Agoura Road nearing Chesebro Road.
29.26.1 (2) It is the same location as in Scenes 29.15 & 29.16.1, just going the opposite direction. Looks like the same trash can in the 2 top photos. Background photo - April, 2010.
29.26.1 (3) In the movie, this scene of Otto was inserted into the other projected scene that we just finished. The white circled area is the same.
29.26.1 (4) I found a couple of aerial photos of the area; note the dates and notes shown on the photo.
30 (1) Mickey and Buddy fly through a hanger at the Sonoma County Airport. The following site has a lot of IAMMMMW airplane information: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm Lower photo taken in 2009.
30 (2) You can't get this angle anymore unless you get permission to be on their runway. Looking east.
30 (3) Google Earth photo - north of Santa Rosa, Calif.
30.1 (1) Continuing the Rancho Conejo landing of Dingy & Benjy, the Colonel tries to direct them to the runway. This Google Earth view is 180 degrees from the views in Scenes 28.3 & 28.5. Note the match-ups in the circles. I added street names so you can look it up in Google Maps.
30.1 (2) Paul Ford falls from the tower when the plane gets too close. Older aerial photos from 1961, 1967, & 1980 help tell the story of the location. Note yellow and red circles.
30.1 (3) Col Wilburforce is hanging from the tower. The 1962 movie frame is pasted on the Google Earth view close to it's proper position.
30.1 (4) When the plane lands, the camera is not far away from the movie control tower. If Google Street View ever goes to these streets, maybe we'll get a better view of the hills to the north. Google Earth makes it hard to match.
30.1 (5) The next scene is obviously a 'projected' scene of them heading for the 4th (and last at the time) hanger. The 'Airport Cafe' comes into view. Read notes on photo. This aerial photo is from 1965 - 3 years after filming and not long before the airport was dismantled.
30.1 (6) They turn into the cafe. If you go down to ground level on Google Earth, you can make out the hills and mountains in the background. The view is from just about where the cafe was located.
30.1 (7) With Google Street View, you can make the Santa Monica Mtns to the south. There are matching points even though the angle is slightly off. Note the street configuration on Google Maps where the photo is taken from and the runway.
30.1 (8) The plane hits the cafe. Note the information on the photo. Compare the aerials!
30.1 (9) Hope you can read the notes on the photo.
30.1 (10) From the position of where the large hanger was on Google Earth, you can make out the hills and mountains (the mountains are barely visible in the movie frame.
31.2 (1) This 'projected' photo view out the window of Culpeper's office is shown several times. This frame is shown just before Intermission. If you move up the movie photo, you can see the match with Google Earth.
31.2 (2) The police station was at Long Beach & 6th. The camera for the background photo in the movie frame was in the yellow circle. Red circle buildings can be matched. The white circle contains the parking lot where the chase ended (Scene 54).
31.2 (3) Here are the locations of two of the buildings in the movie photo. The white lines connect the same points.
31.3 (1) This is close to the position of Intermission as far as Scene numbers.
31.3 (2) Since it's "Intermission", here's some extra information. The Google Earth comment in the photo refers to Google Earth photos dispersed through out the presentation.
31.3 (3) If there are AREAS that you are interested in, this map shows what Scene numbers correspond to the area.
31.3 (4) The Palm Desert area Google Maps map shows which Scenes were filmed within the circles.
31.3 (5) Google Map of Palos Verdes and Long Beach area.
31.3 (6) Oxnard, Malibu, Santa Monica, and Soledad Canyon map. Scene 31 should have been shown on the previous map photo of the Long Beach area.
31.3 (7) There will be a couple of more Google Map photos like the previous 2 coming up later. In the mean time, here is an 'editor's nightmare' examination of their map.
31.3 (8) The bi-plane made a flight from Santa Barbara to 29 Palms to Tustin (at least) although that may not be the order of the flights. Scene 31.3 (11) - coming up - shows a projected scene that I haven't located: I do not think the area is in the area shown on this Google Earth view.
31.3 (9) If you have looked at all the photos so far, you may be wondering why I did all this 'work' (fun). The 'hobby' began a long time ago: When we went to Europe in 1980 (lower photo), one of my goals was to find a place I saw in the June, 1963 Nat'l Geographic magazine (upper photo).
31.3 (10)
31.3 (11) If you have any ideas, post them in the comments!
31 (1) Culpeper 'hasn't forgotten a thing' (lower right movie frame), so he leaves the police building (where Walgreen's is today - left side of Google photo.) The camera location for this scene was where the red dot is (the old YMCA building took up 2/5th of the whole block!) The white circles show the same building. This scene is basically in sequence(it takes place after intermission), but the numbering is off. I am sure that you noticed!
31 (2) For this sequence, the camera was moved out into the street (yellow dot). The red dot was referred to in the last photo - a different camera position.
31 (3) As the Dodge pulls out onto Long Beach Blvd, the telephoto shot reveals buildings that can only be seen if Google Street View is moved further north - note that it is at 7th Street - not 6th. The white circle shows the same building.
31.1 (1) This scene takes place when the '17 different ways' discussion took place (Scene 11). It is placed here because it is closer to the Long Beach scenes - beginning with the previous scene. Culpeper throws his hat out the window and Jerry Lewis happens to be cruising by on Long Beach Blvd. just north of 5th St. (visible in Google and movie frame photos).
31.1 (2) Early on August 28, 2011 I took this photo of the 6th and Long Beach area. The white circle on Walgreens is about where Culpeper's head is in the movie frame - Jerry Lewis is ready to swerve to hit the hat. 'Move' the movie frame straight up.
31.1 (3) Here is the intersection in Google Maps Street View. The entrance to the 'Santa Rosita Police Dept' was about where the Walgreens' gray pillar on the left is. The white circles show matching buildings. The yellow dot on the left is the camera location for the previous scene and the 2 matching orange dots (hard to see) show the intersection of 5th and Long Beach - see next photo.
31.1 (4) The Google camera is about where Jerry Lewis was supposed to be in this projected scene. Note the Sears building at 5th & Long Beach in the movie shot. It is the white building near the left side of the photo with the telephone pole in front of the yellowish sign - it will be referred to later.
31.1 (5) As the Google Street View moves, so does the movie camera. The yellow circles are matching buildings.
31.4 (1) Intermission over: At the following page it is noted that the hardware store is at 5th & Locust: http://members.cox.net/mkpl4/mmmmw/thumb.htm The angled entrance to the laundry and the CocaCola sign (the base only in the lower photo) can be matched.
31.4 (2) You cannot make it out in these photos, but the one- way street (signals and signs just in front of Edie's face) is Locust (one-way to the north in 1962). The large buildings in the background were bulldozed for today's Wal Mart. Note reflection in glass in the lower photo - and in the upper photo, the light blue police car (used in other scenes) and what probably is the Crump's blue Plymouth station wagon.
31.4 (3) A 456 address (not on Locust, but an unidentified street) would naturally be near 5th Street. You can just make out the newsstand that is in both photos (at the corner of 5th & the street that Toy Town is on).
31.4 (4) The SEARS store sign is at 5th and Long Beach. It's at the far right in the lower photo (shown earlier in Scene 31.1). Note on the 1964 map that Locust is one block west of Long Beach.
31.4 (5) Thanks Mark for sending these photos and pointing out that they are not the whole scene and to notice the same Penney's parking sign in both photos.
31.4 (6) The unique building in the upper left of these photos (the upper one taken at 6th & Long Beach is from Scene 31) can be compared. The way the building is configured shows that the lower photo (5th near Locust) is at the opposite corner of the building. Envisioning this on a map makes this easier.
31.4 (7) So... the hardware store seems to be between Long Beach & Locust on 5th Street. White circle: This appears to be a street sign - it probably is No Waite Ct (See next photo). Yellow circle: Locust Avenue signs and signals. White lines connect matching objects.
31.4 (8) Hopefully the map is self explanatory, except for: The thin white line is the camera angle for top photo of 31.4 (6) - see next photo. The orange circle shows the location of the bank building that is visible over the 'unusual' building in that photo. Thanks to Dave Woodman for giving me the idea for this depiction.
31.4 (9) The bank at 3rd & Pine is visible over the 'unusual' building (anyone know what it was?) and over Wal-Mart.
31.4 (10) I found a 1962 aerial that shows the city buildings as they were in the film. The red dot is the camera position for the sequence shown at the bottom.
31.4 (11) With no direct close photo evidence to show the location, as with most other scenes, this one required more explaining with comments and 'indirect' evidence, like this final one (for now).
32.1 (1) Spencer is waiting at the top of the California Incline - contemplating his $350,000 I presume: And waiting for the two cabs that are featured in Scene 30.1 (10) and Scene 31.4 (6).
32.1 (2) Background photo taken in 2009, unlike the previous and following photos which were taken in May, 2010.
32.1 (3) Culpepper looks south and here is what he sees.......
32.1 (4) A view of Pacific Coast Highway: Quite a bit is still recognizable from 1962.
32.1 (5) Now he looks north to PCH and sees.......
32.1 (6) The same scene as in May, 2010.
32.2 (1) The next scene has the cabs heading up the Incline. How do we know which is Rochester's cab?
32.2 (2) Here are movie frames that show which cab is which. The next two photos show 2010 comparisons of the projected scene of photo 6 above.
32.3 (1) Next is a projected scene looking down the California Incline.
32.3 (2) Mickey and Buddy don't like the fact that the Crump's are ahead of them going up the Incline.
32.3 (3) The cabs are viewed from the top of the Incline. I guess the Incline's destruction will not happen until next year. Unless you heard different.
32.4 (1) A movie frame of the next scene is pasted onto a May, 2010 photo.
32.4 (2) Culpeper watches the cabs go by. This background photo was taken in Dec, 2009.
32.4 (3) Dec, 2009 and 1962 at the top of the California Incline.
32.5 (1) After Culpeper makes the call, he meets with 2 other cars at the bottom of the Incline.
32.5 (2) The movie frame is pasted onto a May, 2010 photo.
32.6 (1) The 3 cars line up where the white circle is in the May, 2010 photo.
32.6 (2) A different view of the area where the cars parked (where the white car is waiting to pull out onto PCH). The same roof can be seen within the white circles.
32.6 (3) The light blue 1962 Plymouth used in Scene 2 (lower left) of the movie may be the same one used here - where Culpeper (in his black Dodge), goes on alone to the Big W. The May, 2010 photo is only to show a different vantage point.
32.6 (4) If you lower the movie frame, it's a pretty good match. Background photo taken in Dec, 2009.
32.7 (1) Guess who's coming north on PCH as Culpeper nears the bottom of the Incline?
32.7 (2) It's Otto smoking the tire in Don Knotts' Ford.
32.71 (1) A projected scene of the bottom of the Incline.
32.8 (1) In order to match this view, you have to get up early to beat the traffic. They don't allow pedestrians on this side of the bottom of the Incline. Spencer follows Phil up the Incline.
33 (1) The Big W scenes take place at these locations.
33 (2) The 2 movie photos were filmed at the areas within the white circles. Peck Park, San Pedro.
33 (3) When they went inside Peck Park, they ended up where the next scenes took place - at a private residence miles away.
33 (4) The Big W palms are not there anymore, but other palm trees are.
33 (5)
33 (6) Culpeper walks down to where the others are looking for the Big W.
33 (7) See the white dots within the circle.
33 (8) The Crumps arrive first with Dingy and Benjy close behind. My camera position is fairly close to the spot that was used in the movie. The light pole that is visible in the movie frame is probably not the same one that exists today - there are more poles today.
33 (9) All four of them head in to the park. A replica of the Portuguese Point residence entrance apparently was built for the movie, as only a wall is there today.
33 (10) Top left: Heading into the 'entrance' of Santa Rosita Park. Top right: Coming into the 'park' - viewed from the inside of the private residence. The red dot shows the camera location for the sequence. Google Earth and Maps show matching points (white line) and the location of the 'Big W' (yellow circle).
33 (11) The 3 movie frames are shown out of the general order - this is just to show the camera positions. But the 3 vehicles shown come in in this order: Top: Otto is heading in. Middle right: Culpeper enters. Bottom: The tow truck comes in.
33 (12) Before Lennie discovers the 'Big W' (later photos), glimpses of it can be seen. The red and black & white dots show the positions of Dingy & Benjy in the 2 upper movie frames.
33 (13) Lower left: Otto parks Don Knott's Ford. Lower right: The tow truck group (coming up) enters beyond the Don's car.
33 (14) The next sequence has the four meet up at the location of the white circle in the Google Maps photo (the red dot is the camera spot). Otto pops out and Dingy asks, "Who's he?".
33 (15) Then they see Culpeper enter: Compare the Google Earth photos with the montage -- the red dots are the camera position and the white circles are matching ridge points.
33 (16) The 2011 and 1962 (as the tow truck drives in) montages show the same area.
33 (17) The Crumps continue to search (top); and Culpeper follows the tow truck group (Hopefully you can read the text on the photo). Then Otto follows Culpeper.
33 (18) On the other side of the 'park', Otto pops out of the bushes and meets Culpeper. See the white circles and the text on the photos.
33 (19) The following sequence has Mrs Marcus and Sylvester watching from the area within the thin yellow circle (with the camera direction).
33 (20) The camera location (the red dot) for this scene of Emiline discovering the 'Big W' is close (but not the same) as the earlier shot of the group coming into the 'park'. The white dot is where Dorothy is standing in the upper right photo.
33 (21) Mrs Marcus directs everyone to come out (middle movie frame) on a sidewalk that is shown by the small white circle. The top left photo shows the Crumps on the same sidewalk earlier - looking in the opposite direction. The 2 other white circles show matching features on the distant hillside.
33 (22) "Has anyone seen a man that is UGLY - I mean REALLY ugly". The white circle shows the area of this sequence.
33 (23) Lennie sees Otto and goes after him - following the path of the green dots (both Google photos).
33 (24) Right after Lennie misses Otto with the pick (previous photo), he makes the major "big W' discovery. There are quite a few notes on the photo - hope you can read them. Comment below if you cannot.
33 (25) The white and black/white dots show where Emiline and Culpeper were in the upper left photo. The white oval is where the 'Big W' was. Otto is sure that Lennie deserves an extra share. See notes on photo.
33 (26) Note on movie frame photos.
33 (27) Catalina Island is now visible as they finish digging (white line). Otto counts everyone so they all get an equal share (lower frames).
33 (28) After Lennie realizes that Otto cut himself in for an extra share, they throw him into the hole. Bottom right photo direction is to the south.
33 (29) The cabbies put the $$$$ in Culpeper's car (right center photo) and he walks over to them (upper montage). The made for the movie park entrance is seen over the groups heads. The real residence has this historical plaque attached.
33 (3) Pasted on a 2011 photo of the residence entrance used for the film, are frames of: Upper left: "If you turn yourselves in......" Upper middle: "You'd do that!?" Upper right: "What are we waiting for....let's turn ourselves in!?" Lower frames: Peter Falk the cabbie has his say.
33 (31) These last movie sequences from the Palos Verdes peninsula were shot from the parking lot behind the truck. August 28, 2011 photo.
33 (32) I went back to Long Beach on January 10, 2012 to try and find the camera position for the sequence of Culpeper having the cabbies load the money and telling the group to get into the 2 cabs. The top and lower left movie frames were taken from near the 2012 position. For the lower right frame, either the car or the camera was moved. To see more 2012 photos go to my other album (It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World). This album is just about full. https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/ItSAMadMadMadMadWorld
33 (33) I found a pre-1962 aerial of the Big W area to compare to a new Google photo.
34.1 (1) After Culpeper lets the 2 cabs go, they head back down the California Incline. Background photo taken in August, 2010 at 4:30 a.m.
34.1 (2) The last photo showed a movie frame that is between the 2 movie photos in this one.
34.2 (1) The cabs turn left on PCH. The yellow dots on the May, 2010 photo shows their route. They stop where the white circle is. The green 61 Valiant (circled in the movie photo) was probably the same one used at Knotts' Corner! See Scene 29.19 (2).
34.2 (2) As they drive a short distance south on PCH, Peter Falk is explaining that Spencer "Has some sort of angle". The projected movie shot was in the correct spot as shown by the building within the white circles.
34.3 (1) The cabs are waiting to see what happens (see white circles) as Culpeper comes to the bottom of the Incline.
34.3 (2) Culpeper has already made up his mind what he's going to do.
35.1 (1) They get out of the cabs in front of 936 PCH, to see what is happening. Background photo: May, 2010.
35.1 (2) They see Culpeper turn right onto PCH. Looks like it might be the same stop light pole! See the following for more info on the large building: http://www.vannuys66.com/sorrento.html
35.1 (3) The 2 movie frames show them realizing what's happening and getting back into the cabs. Background photo taken from the walking bridge.
35.2 (1) The camera is now looking north. Note the 'basket-like' object in the May, 2010 photo (on the left) and in the movie shot (to the left of the cab).
35.2 (2) The movie frame of Lennie hanging onto the door as they turn around, is pasted onto a Google Street View photo.
35.2 (3) I was at the Incline in December, 2010. More crowded and rainy than in 1962.
35.2 (4) Move the movie frame straight up and you'll have a pretty good match with today's Google Street View photo.
35.2 (5) In the morning on August 28, 2011 there wasn't much traffic on PCH at the Incline.
35.3 (1) They head north approaching Corral Canyon Road. The 76 station moved. The May, 2010 photo was taken from as high as I could get without a ladder - and a ladder would not have been nearly tall enough!
35.3 (2) As Culpeper drives by, you can see how high the camera was. Background photo: Google Street View looking north. See Gerry's website: http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm
35.3 (3) The lower right photos: http://www.gchudleigh.com/images/corralcyncombined.jpg
35.4 (1) Spencer is happy and satisfied with his money, as he drives north (photos are looking south) on PCH just south of Point Mugu. The following link shows another projected scene that was found with a BluRay DVD. https://picasaweb.google.com/111293404383775855107/ItSAMadMadMadMadWorld#5727309887964627730
35.4 (2) The film shot pasted on a December, 2010 photo of PCH, at the same location as the last.
35.4 (3) Just a bit further along the highway and the scene.
35.5 (1) Culpeper turns left on Puerco Canyon Road, which is SOUTH of Corral Canyon Road which he passed in a previous scene. The cabs follow. Today, Puerco Canyon Road does not exist on the ocean side of the highway.
35.5 (2) The 1962 road is now a private access road of a large residence (Cher's?). Lower photo: Dec, 2009.
35.5 (3) The cabs turn onto what is now a private access road. Background photo: May, 2010.
35.5 (4) The yellow circle shows where Corral Canyon Road intersects with Hwy 101. (See Scene 35.3). The white circles show comparative areas in 2 different years. The red dot is where the camera location was for Scene 35.6 - looking down at the cars turning at the 5-tiered house.
35.6 (1) If you turned toward the ocean from where the previous photo was taken, here is the view you get (upper & lower left photos).
35.6 (2) The cabs follow Culpeper down the driveway. There are 2 movie frames pasted onto the May, 2010 photo.
35.6 (3) Taken from near the 5-tiered roofed house on Malibu Road.
35.6 (4) When you stand closer to the 1962 camera location, you notice that the 5-tiered roofed house cannot be seen. The 'hill' that is in the way is probably 'tailings' from Cher's (?) home project.
36 (1) Culpeper drives his car into Buster's garage near the end of Victoria Ave in Oxnard. Compare the jetty and the houses on the right side of the photos.
36 (2) Some of the houses across the water are still there. Check out the one that is directly over the end of the concrete jetty.
36 (3) The 2 cabs follow. The May, 2010 shot was taken from under a palm tree at the entrance to the parking lot. You can also see this tree in 1st photo of this sequence.
36 (4) When Spencer drives in, it was a different time of the day than when the 2 cabs drove out. The camera angle was changed too. Note which side of the house (the one in the red circle) is in shadow - comparing the 2 lower movie photos. Also note the structure in the background has changed position in relation to the telephone poles.
36 (5) Looks like movie 'stand-ins' except for Buster.
36 (6) This is not great resolution, but here is a 1963 (see lower left corner) aerial photo (compared to a 2010 Google Map view) of where the Oxnard scene was shot. The thin yellow line shows where Buster tried to hide Spencer. You CAN make out some details!
37.1 (1) After they leave Oxnard, Culpeper returns up Puerco Canyon Road, back south on PCH.
37.1 (2) As usual, the cabs follow (2 upper photos). Lower photo shows the camera position of the earlier scene. Note that the car on the right is not there in the later scene.
37.1 (3) Google Street view can't quite match this one.
37.1 (4) This confirms that they had the same camera location for the 2 scenes - going in and coming out.
37.2 (1) Spencer is now driving in the opposite direction along the same stretch of PCH as in a previous scene 35.4: (Point Mugu is just north - around the corner - from here).
37.2 (2) Again, he's just a bit further along the highway - going south this time.
37.3 (1) They come back by Corral Canyon Road - with a high camera location. Background photo: May, 2010. Note that the same camera was used for Culpeper going north & south. There are 3 movie frames pasted together to show this - the black Dodge is going both directions.
37.3 (2) The high camera location was used to film Culpeper going south (with the cabs following), and north (lower photo). A previous scene [35.3 (3)] showed the camera at a lower angle as it filmed the cabs going north.
38 (1) Here is an early 1960's aerial photo of Long Beach compared to a 2010 Google Maps view. If you enlarge it, you can make out some details. Please read the notes on the photo.
38 (2) Hope you can make this out - a Google Earth view showing the locations when they are in Long Beach. The red arrows/lines show filming sections that are shown in Scenes 39 thru 57. The blue circle shows their final location.
38 (3) Here are the sections of roads and streets in the Long Beach (1964 USGS map) area where the filming took place. The yellow dots show the routes of the cars.
39 (1) The 1st scene after they leave PCH north of Malibu takes place near the pontoon bridge (Now Gerald Desmond Bridge) in Long Beach. This photo has been added to: Regarding the last note at the bottom of the photo -- the red dots show the route they took, the yellow dots are wrong. See next photo.
39 (2) This photo has also been added to: The red lines represented my guess, but the yellow lines show the correct roads. The yellow dots show the route they took in the film. The yellow circle and oval (1994 vs 1962) show that a major portion of the 'power plant' was removed.
39 (3) The upper left corner of the previous two photos had the earliest frames of this scene. Here, Culpeper is turning onto Ocean Blvd. The Google Earth 1994 aerial shows today's existing buildings.
39 (4) Culpeper exits this camera view. The aircraft carrier and Herman the German are visible in the 1962 aerial and in this movie sequence - see white and yellow circles. The white line connects an approximate point on the same road.
39 (5) A later frame of the two cabs following is pasted onto two aerials. It is interesting to see the changes made to the area as time progresses. The 1962 aerial is very close to the time of the filming. The red dots show the camera position for this sequence - they will be seen in following photos as well.
39 (6) The second cab cuts the corner. The frame is pasted on two more aerials - from earlier years. Note the changes in the position of the pontoon bridge compared to the years in the previous photo.. The camera position red dots are added again.
39 (7) The second cab takes a beating as the camera pans. The camera position red dots are visible on the two newer aerials. The upper 1994 aerial is the same year that was used in 39 (2).
39 (8) As the camera follows the cars as they go east, matching points that verify the correct intersection come into view (see white and yellow circles). Look closely to see the circles - and the red dot is there again.
39 (9) The two upper movie frames show the end of the first and second sequences. The third sequence is shown at the bottom: A camera in Culpeper's car nears the pontoon bridge, passing a black Ford that appears in later sequences. The Google Street view shows the same view from an approximate location.
39 (10) Culpeper's car bounces across the bridge. See notes on photo.
39 (11) One of the first frames of the next sequence shows a view from the east. Google Street view shows the same view.
39 (12) A cab leaves the ground. The August, 2011 photo was taken from where the pontoon bridge used to be.
39 (13) The first frame of the next sequence has the camera in a different position filming Culpeper's car going over the same 'bump' that it went over in the previous sequence. The frame is pasted on a photo that is probably older than the movie; I do not know the year.
39 (14) As the sequence progresses, the camera moves further away from the bridge, but the 2011 photo shows almost the same angle. Look closely at the power line structures on the right side of all the photos - especially the one that intersects the 'power plant' on it's right end.
39 (15) The cabs follow the Dodge over the same section of the bridge. Google Street view gets very close to the camera location in the movie. Again, note the relative positions of the power line supports.
39 (16) As the camera moves further away (the movie frame is one of the last in the sequence), the 2011 view gets further off. Another comparison: Note the relative positions of the two large power line supports and the small building that is near the water.
39 (17) The next sequence is a projected shot that was taken just east of the bridge - see blue dots that show the section of road shown in Spencer's rear window. The yellow circles (shown in 1962 and an earlier 50's aerial - bottom left) show the intersection that he passes. The red dot appears again just for reference.
39 (18) The 1962 aerial is pasted on a photo of the pontoon bridge and Gerald Desmond Bridge - probably around 1967. After the scene near the pontoon bridge, the movie moves on to...............
40 (1) They next turn right on Pine Avenue off of Ocean Blvd. Google Street View cannot quite get the precise angle, but if the Pike was still there, you'd be able to see it in the upper left center. Also, there is a building that still exists today - if you look about 3/4 of the way across the movie frame from the left, you can see the same building in Google photo - right above it.
40 (2) In August, 2011 I visited the area and got a better angle, although the scope of the photo is not exactly right for this movie frame (same as previous photo).
40 (3) The same, cropped background photo (August, 2011) now is closer to this later movie frame.
40 (4) This later movie frame fits with the new photo.
40 (5) Looking south on Pine. The movie camera was near the corner of Pine and Ocean. Google Street View is from the middle of the intersection. They will be heading onto the then existing Rainbow Pier.
40 (6) One of the last frames in this sequence. The August 28, 2011 photo was taken early on a Sunday morning - almost no traffic - good for a 'compare' visit. Next, they will be filmed at.....
41 (1) Hopefully you can read the text on the photo which describes their route thru Scene 44. See the following for good information on The Pike and Rainbow Pier: http://www.millikanalumni.com/Pike/Map.html
41 (2) As they drive around Rainbow Pier, you can see The Pike (right side of right photo) and the Navy Landing (See 28.21 (5)) that is behind Edie's head in the extended scenes photo, The yellow lines connect the same point.
41 (3) I found a 1965 aerial of Long Beach. If you match up objects (see red lines and white circle), you can tell that the camera was somewhere along the red line; and since the angle is looking down, the camera may have been on the roof of the auditorium.
41 (4) At the end of the sequence, they are on the east side of the pier. If you again match objects along the red lines, the camera location may have been on the roof of the auditorium. The red dot is where the end of the red line was in the previous photo. Also, note the white circle - the same lighthouse.
42 (1) For this scene, the movie camera was looking south toward the Rainbow Pier from the intersection of Ocean and Linden. The two cabs are near the same position that they were in the previous photo (upper right). The Google Street view is about the right elevation, but does not match the movie camera placement in front of the crosswalk.
42 (2) The cabs turn right onto Ocean. The one on the right spins out and falls behind.
42 (3) I was in Long Beach in August, 2011. The camera location for the new photo is close to the movie camera location.
42 (4) The background photo was taken from the same spot as the previous one. Two buildings that still stand are easily recognizable.
42 (5) Google Street View gives a better view of the location, but is not in the correct position. The next scene takes place just beyond the 2 smaller Palm trees on the left side of the movie frame.
43 (1) While Culpeper and the 1st cab continue on Ocean Blvd, the 2nd cab takes a 'short cut' down an alley and parking lot. As we progress thru this scene, you'll be able to see why I drew the yellow dots - the route the second taxi took. Note the same building in the white circle and the 2 Palm trees mentioned in the previous photo comments.
43 (2) On August 28, 2011 I was in Long Beach - if I was closer to the buildings on the right, I would be very close to the camera location for this scene.
43 (3) I am a little closer to the buildings, but now too far away down Ocean Blvd. The added light and dark gray lines on the 2011 photo represent the 2 driveways in the movie frame - one between the 2 Palm trees and one in the extreme foreground. This was referred to in a previous scene 41 (4) comment. The movie camera spot was probably at the right side of the 2011 photo.
43 (4) The 1965 aerial shows the building configuration just 2 or 3 years after the movie was made: You can see the alley that the cab went in to. The red dot shows the camera location, and the white lines, the approximate camera view angle. The small yellow dot shows the position of the cab - note it is front of a building (apparently built between 1962 and 1965) in the 1965 aerial. The white circles show the same building.
44 (1) A few frames later, the camera location changes as it records Culpeper and a cab turning left onto Atlantic from Ocean. The August 28, 2011 photo was taken from a position too close to the intersection - note the 3 Palm trees behind the parked cars.
44 (2) This 2011 photo was taken at bit too FAR from the intersection, but the yellow dots show the route of the 2nd cab that went thru the alley. The movie camera location was directly across from the SUBWAY, as we will see............
44 (3) The route of the 2nd cab is shown in yellow on both the aerials. Culpeper and the 1st cab's route is shown on the 2011 Google aerial. The 2nd cab must have really been going fast thru the alleys - the Dodge and the 1st cab had a big head start down Ocean Blvd, and yet the 2nd cab emerges just as Culpeper goes by!
44 (4) As the cars go by the panning camera, you can see the parking lot across the street (white circle on 1965 aerial). The same area is circled on the 2011 Google photo.
44 (5) As they continue north on Atlantic, a couple of buildings that still exist today come into view, and the large Palm tree is probably the same one. Note the silver Corvette in the scene - it is seen in other scenes as well.
44 (6) Figuring out the camera location (red dot) the hard way - finding the camera angle by finding corresponding points: Like the tall building in the background (circled in yellow); the windows on the building at the corner (red circles); and the base of the Palm tree (note that the red view line goes thru the base of the Palm).
44 (7) One of the last frames of the scene shows the 2nd cab catching up. See notes on photo; and look closely for the colored dots. Also note the position of the red dot based on 'the hard way'.
44 (8) An easier way to find the camera position is to note that the north end of the parking lot is directly across from the street. You can see that on the 1965 aerial with the red dot.
44 (9) Sorry for the small size, but hopefully you can make out the corresponding buildings in the 2011 Google aerial (left) and the 1965 aerial (right). So you can go to the camera location for this sequence today............
44 (10) The camera for this scene was right where the SUV is in the Google Street View photo.
45 (1) I don't know if I'll be able to find where this projected scene was filmed, but it's interesting to see the 'man' in the back seat of the taxi that's following Culpeper.
45 (2) I did find it. The projected shot of the cab has it going north on Locust (the views are looking south) and turning right on 10th St. There is not much to compare further down the street, but the porch support on the pink house appears in the movie frame (see white circle).
45 (3) As Culpeper turns, more comes into view through his rear window. Look closely in the white circles - 3 palm trees and a white house to the left of the trees can be identified today. Move the movie frame straight up and it will be close to the same scale.
45 (4) Without knowing that this is the intersection location, this comparison would be very difficult. But you can see similarities within the white circles.
45 (5) The Google Street View and the 2 movie frames are facing the same direction - west down 10th St. In a few photos you will again see the newly planted tree with 2 sticks holding it up that is visible just to the right of Spencer's head in the right movie frame. This helps confirm that the same intersection is used for both this scene (45) and the next (46).
45 (6) The area within the white circle in the Google Street photo can be compared to the area just to the left of Spencer's ear in the right movie photo. You can see the storm drain in 1962 and 2011, but also note the 2 'lumps' in the grass next to the curb between the drain and Spencer's ear. You will see these in the next scene (46).
46 (1) This scene filmed from Culpeper's car is shot at the same intersection going the same direction. It is easy to see the same houses that appear between the Palm trees on the right side of the photos - it looks like one of the 3 large Palm trees was removed. The large photo was taken on August 28, 2011.
46 (2) To help verify that this is the same corner, I took Google Street View past 10th on Locust to see these matching buildings.
46 (3) 1962 and 2011.
46 (4) Turning east on 10th St. The newly planted tree, the grass 'lumps', and storm drain in the white circle were referred to in the previous scene. These features show that the same intersection was used.
46 (5) The building in the middle of the movie frame is now red. The light blue building in the 2011 photo is also visible in the movie.
46 (7) Google Street view shows more details of the buildings.
47 (1) The next sequence has them turning into the same block of Locust that the last 2 scenes were filmed at. They are turning off 9th St.
47 (2) They are heading north on Locust Ave. The new photos in this scene were taken in the morning on August 28,2011.
47 (3) The houses and Palm trees on the left can be matched.
47 (4) The scope of the views are close. Didn't we see the black Ford on the pontoon bridge?
47 (5) Wonder why they edited the film to play this way?
48 (1) This next sequence is about 1/2 mile to the east - they are heading south on Elm Ave just north of Anaheim St. The white circles show matching buildings.
48 (2) Other buildings that still exist can be compared as they get closer to Anaheim St.
48 (3) They begin to turn right on Anaheim St. The buildings on the corner have been torn down.
48 (4) The Midas Muffler shop is still there! Just a different building. The building just over the policeman's head is recognizable as well.
48 (5) Early morning on August 28th, 2011. If you 'move' the movie frame straight down, it will match. There are at least 3 buildings that can be compared.
48 (6) The 1962 movie shot is pasted onto a 2011 photo. The 1960 blue Chevrolet that is parked on the right side of the movie frame was featured in Scene 46.
49 (1) I haven't been able to locate where Spencer turns left. My guess is that heading north or west and turning to the west or south. There are a few clues, but maybe the intersection has changed too much for references - like in Scene 31.
50 (1) Here they were going south on Long Beach and turning east on East 14th Street. Note the large building on the right - how it matches the movie frame. At least in 2010..........
50 (2) I was there in August, 2011 and the building was gone.
50 (3) This 2011 Google Street View shows the same thing. At least we know this is where it was filmed; in few years it probably will ALL be changed.
50 (4) The building on the SW corner is still there (the white one), but the large white building on the left in the movie shot is gone.
50 (5) This Google photo viewed from the other side shows the existing building (white circle) and the area of the James Motor Center building that is not (yellow circle). The orange dots represent the route they took - going south on Long Beach Blvd and turning east on 14th St. The moving camera would have been at the far end of the dots and beyond.
51 (1) This next sequence was filmed just east of Scene 46 on 10th Street at Long Beach Blvd. Buildings further down the street can still be seen - on both sides.
51 (2) As the inboard camera gets closer to the intersection, you can note that the One Way sign is a prop; they had 2 policemen (1 on a motorcycle) holding up traffic for the filming; and spectators are standing on the sidewalks watching (unless they were 'stand-ins' - but if they were, they probably would have been instructed to look less casual). The white circles match buildings.
51 (3) As they turn onto Long Beach Blvd, the buildings are the same, just updated.
51 (4) This Google photo is a year older - note the changes in the corner building compared to the last photo. The two white circles show buildings that can be identified in the next scene.
52 (1) The camera changes location at the same intersection - Culpeper turns right off 10th St onto Long Beach Blvd. The white building with the tall sign (movie) is still there (dark yellow).
52 (2) This Google Street View is an older 'edition', but it is closer to the right camera angle. The Fabric Outlet (movie) was Blockbuster in 2010. It looks like the Flying A gas station building was converted to a 7-Eleven.
52 (3) The camera location for the movie was very close to the angle of the upper 2011 Google Street View photo (Note white circles). The lower Google photo moves a bit further south, but it shows the old house that is still there (yellow circles). The movie frame on the right is one of the last for this camera spot.
52 (4) The camera location is now further south on Long Beach Blvd. The tan garage is now a parking lot, but the old house and Palm trees are still there. The 2 movie frames are included in the sequence highlighted in the next photo.....
52 (5) Hopefully you can read the captions on this sequence of the man jumping out of his Jeep. The last photo at the lower right is taken from the next camera location.
52 (6) The camera moves even further south on Long Beach, but this Google photo is from a point that is not far enough to the south - it is here to get a better view of the scene. They get ready to turn onto 9th Street. The 2 white Fords (Scenes 39 & 40), the Jeep (Scene 29.1), the black convertible, and the ubiquitous silver Corvette (40 & 44), are all in this photo.
52 (7) When you move to the general camera location (shown by the man on a stool), you can hardly see the scene because of the rail line and the trees. The yellow & white circles show matching points. The "9th St" sign that is on the pole in the foreground (see next photo) is not there today - only the one across 9th St. (white circle).
52 (8) In August, 2011, I was in Long Beach to take this photo - a closely matching one to the last frame of the movie sequence. There is no 9th St. street sign on the SW corner of Long Beach Blvd.
53 (1) After they circle the city block in various scenes (Scene 46 in the upper left should be Scene 51), no wonder that Emeline feels queasy as the cabs head south to the next scene...........
53 (2) The filming of this sequence was from the west (see the first movie frame at lower left), but this view from the east shows the route they took going west down 1st Street and turning into what was then, North Waite Court (yellow arrow). The white circled building is where they end up later. The top Google Maps photo is a new one - the one with the arrow is 2010.
53 (3) Culpeper and the cabs come into view (The 2nd cab is seen turning off of Long Beach Blvd). The Edison building is prominent in both 1962 and 2011.
53 (4) The yellow lines show their route from Long Beach to 1st to what was then North Waite Court. The red dot is the camera location. The white circle is the parking lot where they end up in the cars (next scene), and the blue circle is the top of the building where they end up before their end.
53 (5) Culpeper and the 1st cab make into the alley (just off to the left of the August, 2011 photo).
53 (6) The 2nd cab overshoots and has to back up. No more alley, but it looks like the same building on the left.
53 (7) As they drive down North Waite Court here is the view they would have had today. Broadway is the first street visible in the 2011 photo and is the first street visible (from the opposite direction) in the first movie frame of the next scene.....
54 (1) Here is the alley on August 28, 2011. With all the building going on, it's doubtful that the green building will be there much longer. This scene was filmed from a camera on some sort of platform (the crane?) - higher than eye level.
54 (2) As the photos for this scene progress, you will notice that the parking area where they filmed was larger than it is today - the red dots are the same spot in 2011 (left), and 1962 (right). You can see Culpeper and his route (black dots) on top of the building that was used for the rooftop scenes (Scene 56).
54 (3) This sequence in the parking lot begins at the top and goes clockwise. The colored circles show the same points - or close. The orange circle area is under the building today.
54 (4) The white circle on the 2011 photo is where Spencer is in the top right movie frame. The yellow circles are matching patches in the parking lot (See Google Earth photo at left). The black car in the 2011 photo is just about where Culpeper's Dodge hit the 2nd cab (top left frame).
54 (5) This sequence begins at the upper right and goes clockwise: Culpeper leaves the car just before the words come over his radio that everything is taken care of. The 2 cabs empty going after him. The two frames in the upper right show that they were filmed at a different time (note white circles). Hope you can make sense of the diagram - have fun seeing how accurate it is.
55 (1) Upper left: "Arrest Captain Culpeper". The other 3 movie frames show him entering and exiting an alley that is seen on the 1962 aerial. Do you think that there was a 'stunt person' for Mrs Marcus?
55 (2) The camera location moves a bit to the east for the sequence in the upper 2 frames. Culpeper is seen on the right of the upper left shot. Where this was filmed is underneath the large building behind the truck in the 2011 photo. The lower movie shots have the group chasing Spencer into the alley where 4 others are heading toward him. See next photo for a clear explanation! 5 buildings that were there in 1962 can be identified in the August, 2011 photo. Can you find them?
55 (3) Here's a fun one for you - hope you can see it (and figure it out). The upper left shows Sylvester jumping over a cab at the end of the 1st sequence. The 2nd & 3rd sequences (represented in the right photos) show most of them in different areas. The black line pointing into the 'Google' building on the right is addressed in the next photo.
55 (4) As Culpeper heads south into North Waite Court, he sees 4 persons heading for him; so he goes into the building on the right at the spot that is marked with a white oval (1962 and today). The lower movie frame shows them converging on the entrance.
55 (5) What Culpeper would have seen as he went north thru the alley: J Russell (black oval); Col Hawthorne (tan); Lennie (green); and cabbie Peter Falk (blue with the yellow cap). Their positions are based on a comparison of the last frame of the sequence before (upper left), and the first frame of the scene after Culpeper looked back (upper right). If you stood at the spot in the the 2011 photo and turned around, you'd see Melville, then Otto, then cabbie Rochester, then Monica coming right at you! You would turn into the stairway alley which is the first opening on your left.
55 (6) After Culpeper goes up and in, the others go up and tell the women to stay behind. Today, through the fences and gates, you can still see details in the side alley.
55 (7) The Google Earth photo shows the small alley in the still-exiting buildings. They end up at the top of the large building in the upper left. David Zaitz had a good matchup on Mark's site, which has closed down: http://members.cox.net/mkpl4/mmmmw/thumb.htm
56 (1) After they chase Culpepper up the stairs, he comes out on the rooftop of 207 East Broadway. After he climbs a ladder (next photo), the group also comes onto the roof.
56 (2) It's easy to see a couple of the same buildings from the rooftop of 201 Broadway. After this shot, the rest of the group emerges from the rooftop door (previous photo).
56 (3) 201 Broadway building still has the 'claws' on the parapet. The white circled ones on the Google Street View photo are easy to see: The thin black pointer lines show the location of the 'claws' in the movie frame. Culpeper looked over the side close to the center of the west side of the building - to the right of the white oval.
57 (1) In these scenes, it has been said that they were filmed at the studio. Photo 5 is a 'composite' of a "miniature city" and studio location. They may have used the building in the Google Street View photo as a 'model'. The building at the left in the photo is the one used in the rooftop scenes.
57 (2) The next scene shows the 'studio' building (and a couple of other buildings in the lower center of the picture) 'pasted' onto a shot of Pine Street looking south. The circled building is the 'rooftop' building.
57 (3) Here is a Google Street View of Pine Street showing a couple of identifiable buildings.
57 (4) There is more than one 'cut' of the scene where they are on top of the ladder. The 'studio' shot is 'pasted' onto a shot of Pine Street taken from the building on the NE corner of 3rd and Pine. Note white circles.
57 (5) The building on the right of the Google Street View photo probably is the one where the camera was located for the shot of Long Beach onto which the 'studio' shot was pasted.
57 (6) The building that the camera was probably on top of for this view of Long Beach is the prominent one at left center of the Google Street View photo. You can see it also in the previous photo.
58 (1) As you go through the next series of photos, which show the final 'destination' for each character, maybe you can find more unusual features. Post a comment if you find any!
58.1 Melville Crump (Sid Caesar) and his final destination and location.
58.2 The next one to fall is Cabbie Peter Falk. Can you find him in the bottom 2 photos?
58.3 Then comes Cabbie Rochester.
58.4 Otto is thrown thru the window with the brown curtains. He's had a tough day!
58.5 Lt. Col. J. Algernon Hawthorne, Dingy, and Benjy all bounce into one, small fountain pond.
58.6 Lennie (Jonathan Winters) gets off the ladder into a palm tree, then falls in cement.
58.7 J. Russell Finch (Milton Berle) falls from the same palm tree - but it must be a very tall palm tree!
58.71 (1) The background photo can be matched with Google Earth. Ocean Blvd is on the left and Pine Avenue/1st Street is where the tower is.
58.71 (2) This vertical angle is fairly close. They probably were on the top of a building that no longer is there.
58.71 (3) From Google Street View you can still see both buildings.
58.8 Sylvester (Dick Shawn) falls from the same palm tree and goes straight down (2), then in mid air, angles onto a table (3-5).
58.9 Spencer Tracy falls from the palm tree with one it's fronds, hooks it on a mysterious cable, and ends up being licked by a dog.
59 (1) After a hard day, they had something to laugh at.
