Martinez Daytrip

I took a Wednesday off. Jess and I took the BART to Walnut Creek, spent about an hour and a half at Rivendell with my friend Spencer and the owner Grant Petersen, biked on to Martinez for lunch, then to the John Muir National Historic Site, and finally through Briones Regional Park. We took the BART back home before dark.

Mt Diablo Cycle-Camping Trip

On Saturday morning, I took the BART to Walnut Creek east of Oakland. I visited Rivendell, and bicycle frame maker that I've been interested in for a long time. Then I set off to scale Mt Diablo, climbing a grueling 3000 feet with camping gear in tow. I spent the late afternoon and evening at Juniper Campground, watching the sunset and bright full moon with clear skies. Early the next morning, I climbed the last two miles to the summit and took in the views. Then I coasted all the way down to Walnut Creek and took the BART home.

Hawaii 2009

I spent ten days in Oahu, Hawaii visiting my buddy Kwig who is doing his three-year residency in pediatrics at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. His girlfriend, Adrienne, is Managing Editor at the Honolulu Weekly, and lives a block away. I arranged my visit to coincide with Jim and Chiung-Hui's visit, and we all had a great time together. The first half of my time Kwig had vacation and Jim and Chiung-Hui were there. The second half, Jim and Chiung-Hui had left and Kwig was back at work, so I had time to explore on my own. The island is a breathtaking, tropical paradise.

Mt. Auburn Cemetery Trip

Jon, Henry, and I went for a trip first to the Shady Hill School and then to Mt Auburn Cemetery. We had a nice walk around, lunch at the base of the tower, and then went up the tower. It was fun pulling Henry in the trailer!

Jess and I rented a car and had a weekend trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. We spent Friday night at a campground in Woodstock, Saturday at Clark's Trading Post and then at Ben and Kirsten's in Lancaster, and Sunday we had pefect weather for hiking Franconia Ridge.

Freedom Trail

There are a few "Boston tourist" things Jess and I want to do, and this was one of them: walk the Freedom Trail. We had an absolutely perfect Saturday for it, and we managed to sneak into an excellent guided tour. Boston and History are neat!

Poconos 2007

The standard annual family time in the Poconos: reading, sleeping, eating, watching movies, swimming, amuzing and being amuzed by Henry, going for walks. There was bingo, a round of golf, and a visit to the quaint town of Honesdale, "The birthplace of the American Railroad." A few of us unfortunately got a 24-hour bug that had us sick and in bed. Jess joined us for the first half of the week and then went on to a brief visit in NYC and then a few days in Albany.

BBQ for JC and Dennis

To welcome back JC from his travels in Colombia, and to wish Dennis good luck with his move to Seattle, we had a barbecue on the Quad. Delicious food included chicken sausage, veggie burgers, bruschetta, corn on the cob, fresh salad, chocolate chip cookies, and an array of beverages. Good times.

Colombia 2007

Ten-day trip in Colombia, an incredible experience. I've had an urge for a while to travel to a very different place, and this satisfied part of that urge and helped me understand better what I'd like to do in future trips. It was a fantastic opportunity, traveling with JC and staying with / being shown around by his relatives.

New Hampshire May 2007

Dennis and I had a nice long weekend at his Mom's place in New Hampshire. Highlights included: long sleeps in the white room, two great dinners, pancakes and scones for breakfasts, perfect weather, naps, taking Kinder for walks, stacking firewood, canoeing on the lake, Bach chorales on the piano, discussions of Cambodia, world religions, and round-the-world trips, "Waiting for Godot" and "The Sopranos" on TV, and Dennis doing reading for his work.

Paris 2007

Tim and Jess had a fantastic one-week trip to Paris at the end of March. We stayed in the 9th arrondissement, between Montmartre and the Opera. Our days were spent in lots of walking and wandering at first, then with museums and sights sprinkled in. Jess particularly enjoyed walking through the street markets and seeing how different they are from farmers’ markets here. Tim enjoyed eating the fruits of her visits (and useable French) at these markets. We visited some of the standards, plus more offbeat places like the sewer museum which was, yes, actually in a sewer and smelled like it. Tim had two adventures at the edge of the city – one to see a velodrome, or bike race track, and one to La Defense, the new business district. We also had a great tour guide in Tim’s friend Chris who is a composer living in Paris. Our Algerian dinner, l’As de Falafel sandwiches, Gerard Mulot desserts, numerous baguettes and two market cheeses were culinary highlights.

White Mountains Trip

Weekend trip to the White Mountains. We stayed at a great B&B (Wilderness Inn). We had plans for a long hike (Lafayette, Lincoln, and Little Haystack mountains), but cut it short due to cold, wind, snow, and poor visibility. But then we had a nice walk along a bike path by the highway which made for nice views, including the site of the Old Man of the Mountain. On the Sunday, we drove to Dartmouth to visit Kwig. We had lunch with him and his Med School buddies, saw his apartment, got a tour of campus, and had a read in a very nice, cozy library while it drizzled outside.

Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival

Thousands of bluegrass fans of all ages and types attended this 28th annual Labor Day weekend event. Camping, all-night pickin' in the campgrounds, a fantastic arcade, bluegrass workshops of all kinds, and some incredible bluegrass bands. Larz Anderson Bike Show

Jess and I (and separately JC and Matt) biked out to this unique event on a beautiful summer day. There was an incredible array of (mostly classic / antique) bicycles, including a few which charted the evolution of the derailleur. Highlights: Gene's Frejus, which he spent many months and thousands of dollars restoring, won "Best post-1969 lightweight restored". Mike Flanigan of ANT (antbikemike.com) won a few categories with his beautiful hand-built version of a classic wood-tubing bike.
