Self Portraits for BlazeVOX [books] Event

BlazeVOX @ Burchfield Penney We are going to have an extravagant BlazeVOX [books] event at a new large art gallery in Buffalo on November 10th 2011 from 6 to 8 PM. Many fun events: poetry reading featuring Mike Basinski, Robin Brox and Michael Kelleher. Also a silent auction of artwork. The art will be self-portraits of local and national poets and book people. Including work from National Book Award winner Keith Waldrop and the first Canadian Poet Laureate, George Bowering. My inspiration for these self-portraits was Burt Britton’s book, Self-Portrait, Book People Picture Themselves. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/nyregion/24drawings.html We plan to auction these off to help raise money for BlazeVOX [books]. John Ashbery's 80th birthday party

From Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac: It's the birthday of poet John Ashbery (books by this author), born in Rochester, New York (1927). He said, "I've always felt myself to be a rather frustrated composer who was trying to do with words what musicians are able to do with notes. The importance of meaning that's beyond expression in words is what I've always been attracted to." He also said, "To create a work of art that the critic cannot even begin to talk about ought to be the artist's chief concern."
