Neil brought the kids to Rochester for a Sunday afternoon. Neil and Ryan fished the ccanal at Fairport and caught three fish: Ryan 2 and Papa 1.

Kauffman Performing Arts Center
The Kauffman Family Foundation has provided major funding for this new performing arts center in Kansas City. It is set to open in October. Peter and I went down early sunday morning and spent an hour or more making pictures of the back of the center. A half-marathon was being held and passed by as well.

Visit to Appleton
Bill traveled to Appleton to visit Meg and her family: Lynne, Harry, and Bronwen. Lynne is now working in Whitewater about 2 1/2 hours away. Meg is attending the american Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle and Bill is providing custodial services for Bronwen during her absence.

Grandaddy's Big Adventure 2000
In June 2000 I went to Chicago to babysit Harry and Bronwen while their aprents were attending academic conferences. We had a great time in Hyde Park and Chicago. These are some of the pictures I took then. Now I prepare to visit Appleton WI to be with Bronwen--now 16 and high school junior--while Meg is away at another academic conference. Harry is at Lawrence University as a frist year student and so the three of us will be together..alone...again.

Hike in Palm Canyon
On Saturday afternoon, we took a short drive to Palm Canyon which is an Agua Caliente band site composed of canyons extending from the desert floor into the mountains. Because of the springs in these canyons, palm trees grow there. They are truly oases in the desert. Admittedly they are a little less dramatic to the modern visitor because of all the irrigation in the modern desert communities. The Amerindians who lived here would spend their summers in the cool mountain canyons and their winters in the desert. Smart, uh? We hiked into the main Palm Canyon and then spent a little time in San Adreas canyon.
Safari Park October 2010
After breakfast with Melanie and Candy, we spent the rest of the day at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, now renamed Safari Park. We visited exhibits and went to some favorite shows, especially the bird show. We also treated ourselves to a two hour safari truck photo caravan out in the exibit areas. Too much fun.

California Trip October 2010: San Juan Capistrano and Seaport Village
We traveled to Souther California to celebrate Gerry and Kara's wedding. We spent the first day driving from LA to San Diego with visit to San Juan Capistrano. That evening we met Sean who was in San Diego for a business conference and he treated us to a wonderful dinner at Harbor House in Seaport Village.

Rifle Range Trail October 2010
Within a few steps you feel like you are deep in wilderness eventhough you are within an active urban area. This was a National Guard training ground until the mid 1950's and has been converted to a wonderful hiking area along the banks of the Irondequoit Creek Wetlands. learn more here: http://www.gvc-adk.org/outings/hiking/rifle_range.php

Harriet Hollister Recreation Site
Marilyn is off to day so I took a break from preparing for my comps and we went south to Harriet Hollister. It only takes about 45 minutes. It was cloudy but colorful. This is a favorite cross country ski and snow shoe area because it is high and gets lots of snow and cold.

Ralph and Diane Virchau came from Buffalo for the day. One of our activities was to go to St. Michale's for the monthly concert by Eastman School and then 4:00 Mass. St. Michael's is one of the most architecturally significant structures in Rochester and has been well maintained by the parish and the diocese.

Neil turned 35 on September 18 and we went to Buffalo to celebrate. Molly had been under the weather a bit but as you can see is back up to full steam.

Braden and Brock are spending a few days with us. Grandma got them involved in an art project...at Brock's suggestion. Their sculpture is very interesting. We spent the afternoon at the Strong National Museum of Play with Erin, Brynne, and Grady.

Eileen's Susan G. Komen 60 mile walk
Eileen was a participant in the 60 mile walk for breat cancer research. She and the 1000 other walkers slept in a tent village filled with pink tents.

Brock Skates Evo
Brock particpated in a street comp at Evolution in Canton OH. He had fun skating for a couple of hours before and working on some mini and bowl tricks. He too third in the beginners and was the youngest by a good five years.
Visit with Sean, Julie and Sam
We spent three days in Pleasant Hill with Sean and his family. On Sunday we went to the top of Mt. Diablo; we drove this one since it is almost 4,000 feet and almost all of that is vertical gain from the base. We did walk the last 200 feet since the summit parking was full!

Hiking Bald Mountain
Bald Mountain is in Sugarloaf State Park in Sonoma CA. We started around noon and it took us two hours to get to the summit and then a hour back to the trailhead. Elevation was 2797 with a 1200 foot gain in 2.6 miles. The last two thirds was on a utility road which had a noticeably steeper grade than the foot trail. Also it was mostly in the sun and very hot. As is often the case, the best pictures were the details not the vistas.

2010 King of the Groms-Woodward Regional
Borck competed for the second year. He took second in the bowl and the mini and seventh in the street. He got a lot of loot including two decks. More importantly he qualified for the Nationals February 18-20 in Minneapolis.
