2012 April 19 Earth Festival, 2012

The Austin Community College District invited the college and community to take part in events that promoted environmental awareness during the month of April. “These events were a reflection of ACC’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” said Carla Jackson, associate director of ACC’s Center for Public Policy & Political Studies. “In organizing these events, our ultimate goal was to share environmental knowledge and trends that affect our communities today and into the future.” All activities were free and open to the public. Events included: Clean EnergY-Factor: Women in Clean Energy, Sol Concert: Blues and Soul Concert Using Solar Power, the 4/19 Earth Fair of exhibitors and speakers (pictures of the event are in this album), and a Star Gazing Party.

2011 Constitution Debate Day Celebration

ACC students wrestled with a myriad of issues as they participated in the college’s fifth-annual Constitution Debate Day Celebration. Students were given an opportunity to examine their knowledge and beliefs about the Constitution while reflecting on their rights in today’s politically-charged climate. Over 400 students, 25 Constitutional Guides, and almost 50 Process Facilitators participated in the program. “ACC’s program is the best model of civic education for tomorrow’s leaders that I have encountered...” stated Constitutional Guide April Farris, an associate at Yetter Coleman LLP, member of the Federalist Society, and whose law firm is now a general supporter of the annual program. The event was hosted by CPPPS, ACC’s Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Center for Student Political Studies, the Student Government Association, and the city of Austin. The event was co-sponsored by the ACLU Foundation of Texas, and The American Board of Trial Advocates.

MARCH 2, 2011 - ACC's First Texas Independence Day

This program was presented by ACC’s Center for Student Political Studies (CSPS), its Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS), its Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the Department of History. Distinguished guest speakers included Senator Gonzalo Barrientos, ACC Professor of History Larry Willoughby, and ACC Government Professor Lisa Perez-Nichols. ACC students, faculty, and staff enjoyed music, traditional food, and were able to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of Texas Independence Day, and the role that many peoples played... In addition, as part of this exciting program, there was a session where students worked collectively to decide what should go into "their" new republic's constitution, affording students the opportunity to get a glimpse into what is involved in the creation of a democratic country. Job Creation Forum for Students - March 10, 2010 at EVC

The Austin Community College District hosted a student forum about job creation on at the college’s Eastview Campus. The event asked participants to consider what the government is doing or could be doing to stimulate job growth. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ray Marshall, professor emeritus of the University of Texas’ LBJ School of Public Affairs and former secretary of labor under President Jimmy Carter. The forum addressed the issues of taxes, immigration, minimum wage laws, and the country’s infrastructure. ACC Economic experts guided student discussions. “We wanted students to gain a better understanding of the complexities involved in this aspect of the economy and what they as individuals could do to prepare themselves for the 21st century job market,” said Peck Young, director of ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies, which co-sponsored the forum. Student Mock Congressional Healthcare Hearing

ACC and UT at Austin students got a firsthand look at the political process as they took part in a mock hearing on healthcare reform legislation at the Texas Capitol. The event, sponsored by CPPPS, CSPS, and other organizations, featured students filling the roles of Democratic and Republican members of Congress. They heard expert testimony from witnesses like Jose Camacho, E.D and general counsel for the TACHC, on the issue of healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured. Attny. Bill Hopkins spoke to the students about patient safety and hospital staffing. “I felt like a real congressman trying to get the best information in the time available,” said ACC participant Brice Gump. "I enjoyed listening to both sides of arguments.” said UT participant Miranda Colletta. The National Nurses Organizing Committee joined faculty from ACC, the University of Texas at Austin’s LBJ School of Public Affairs, and UT School of Law to prepare students for the event.

Constitution Debate Day Celebration Sept 23, 2009 at the LBJ Auditorium

CPPPS, along with ACC’s Government Department, the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division, and the LBJ Library and Museum, is hosting a constitutional debate at the LBJ Auditorium from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. ACC students will work with Constitutional experts and ACC Facilitators to debate, discuss, and learn different aspects of the living breathing document called the U.S. Constitution.
