Patrick Jewell -- B Movie Series
The B Movie paintings are based on images from old films in the public domain. I will take obscure films, find a shot that I like, pause the film, and take a photo. Then I'll work from that photo to make a painting. I use different kinds of cameras and films, and get different kinds of information that way. I love using Polaroid, but that is scarce these days, so I also use 35mm and digital cameras. I pick a shot that i find visually interesting, and which also appeals to me for its banality, goofiness, oddness, or humor. With black and white movies, I use a palette limited to three colors: a warm black, a cool blue, and a neutral white. I like the way this palette can suggest the glow of a TV screen at night. I like finding remarkable images in mostly unremarkable, and forgotten, films. These films give me a wide range of images that often resonate in unexpected ways.
