Lord Shiva gives the amta linga to Ravana with pre-requisite conditions! Ravana enlists the help of Ganapati disguised as a cowboy to satisfy Shiva's conditions!
Ganapati in the form of a cowboy proves to be a run-time exception in Ravana's program. He drops the Linga on the sea shore. The place is called Gokarna now.
Ravana tries in vain to displace the Atma linga from Gokarna. It breaks into 5 pieces and each piece falls at different places when Ravana throws them about. One of the five pieces of the sacred linga falls in Murudeshwara.
Shiva Temples are consecrated at all the places which have the pieces of the Atma Linga with Gokarna being the base.
