December 2011, Baja Sur

December found us around central and southern Baja. We fished, SUPed, surfed, kiteboarded, biked and consumed lots of yummy food. We celebrated Scott's birthday in Punta Abreojos. We've met so many cool gringos -- our spanish is NOT improving.

Februrary was characterized by scenery overload. As we started to head north, the beaches and waterfalls dominated our daily activities. We made it north of Auckland and started to experience the ”sunny, winterless north“.

We traveled from Christchurch in the South Island, over the mountains to the west coast, then to the north coast. Next, we hopped on a boat to the North Island where we traveled up the west coast for a day then went on to the east coast where we continued our travel to the north.

December on the South Island (NZ), 2010

The month of December had some highs and lows. The low was Scott getting sick and staying sick for at least 10 days. We traveled south from Dunedin through the Catlins region all the way to the southern-most city on the South Island, Invercargill. As we started heading back north we hit places we had already visited just 1-3 months ago. December ended in Timaru, the town we spent over 2 weeks in (3 months ago) while we waited for the stormy winter weather to clear.

November on the South Island (NZ), 2010

November started out with warmth and sunshine as we traveled from the dry interior to the east coast of the South Island. Once we hit the east coast, it was not as warm and sunny but we started to see lots of great sealife. We are definitely in the land of the NZ sea lion (as you will see from all the pics).

October was the month we had been waiting for. Epic snowboarding, mountain biking, scenery, camping spots, and weather. We started with a fair bit of spring snow in the mountains and watched as it melted away towards the end of October. The weather started warming up so much that we managed to get our first kiteboarding session.

September on the South Island (NZ), 2010

During September we were in Christchurch during the 7.2 mag earthquake. We also spent a few days in the backcountry in between storms. The bulk of September was spent in Timaru about 2 hours south of Christchurch where we waited out “the biggest storm in the world” to clear. The storm blasted the west coast and the mountains.

We spent the second half of August on the South Island. In between trying to find snow for backcountry snowboarding adventures, we saw some amazing wildlife and scenery on the east side of the island.

During the month of June we dodged rain showers while trying to get outside as much as possible. We traveled north (on the North Island of NZ) towards Auckland where we had a flight at the end of the month.

March, April, May 2010

March, April and May were quite varied. In March, we started our journey north, back towards Sydney where we sold our van and got rid of almost everything we had in anticipation of moving to New Zealand. We flew to NZ on 4th May. These past few months have been a lot of chores and a little bit of fun. 24 pics in 3 months is a record low...

February in Tasmania, 2010

We boarded the Spirit of Tasmania with hundreds of other campervans and motorhomes on our journey to Tasmania. The trip across the Bass Strait was rough and we got a bit seasick. The journey was well worth it. We are so disappointed that we only booked 2 weeks in Tasmania. We could spend an entire summer in Tasmania and never see all that we would want to see. It was wild, rugged, full of cute wildlife, and void of people.

After we crossed the Nullarbor Plain from WA we started following the coastline of South Australia and then Victoria. We made it to Melbourne where we took a detour to Tasmania. Pictures from February were NUMEROUS. I managed to get 362 pics down to 74 for sharing purposes.

We believe that we visited the most beautiful part of the entire country since starting our travels (in May 2009) during January. Southern WA has gorgeous coastline and massive old growth forests. The white sand beaches go unmatched anywhere in OZ -- perhaps the world.

September seemed to be dominated by kiteboarding along the central Queensland coast. We had perfect weather most of the time without a drop of rain.

Xmas and New Years Holiday

During our 2 weeks off we traveled south of Sydney for some biking, surfing, snorkeling, windsurfing, and kiteboarding. For the most part, the weather cooperated and we saw some lovely scenery. We even managed to drive BACK to Sydney for the NYE fireworks before heading back to the south coast.
