Science in the Summer! Presented by Abington Free Library. Sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline. Administered by The American Association for the Advancement of Science www.scienceinthesummer.com. Physical Science/Electricity. Monday, June 27 – Thursday, June 30, 2011. Abington Free Library, Community Room. How do magnets make electricity? What causes static electricity, and how can you observe its effects? How does electrical current work? Learn all this and more as you build circuits, make an electron magnet using electrical current, and test conductivity of different objects during this exciting four-day science course. Children must be able to attend on all four dates. Class times are as follows: Completed grades 1 or 2: 10:00-10:45 a.m. OR 2:00-2:45 p.m. Completed grades 3, 4 or 5: 11:15 a.m.-12 noon OR 3:15-4:00 p.m. REGISTER MAY 23 THROUGH JUNE 7. Matter of Fact Workshop

Abington Free Library Children’s Department presents “MATTER OF FACT” by Mad Science of West New Jersey Wednesday, October 20, 2010 from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (1 - 2 p.m. session is full) For homeschoolers in grades K-6 Community Room, Lower Level. In this workshop students will learn the fundamentals of chemistry. They will construct their own marshmallow molecules, learn to distinguish between physical and chemical changes, and even get to play alchemist for a day by turning a nickel into gold (well, almost). To finish up, children are introduced to the basics of polymers and get to make their own polymer putty to take home!

Bark Pals 2010

A FREE, fun-filled reading adventure for children who have finished grades 1-5 Like DOGS? You’ll LOVE reading to them! June 30 & July 7, 14, 21, 28, 3:30-4:00 p.m. Children who practice reading aloud to non-critical listeners, such as dogs, will feel more confident about their reading skills. Every child who participates each week will receive a free book. While parents are welcome to greet the dogs, children will attend the program on their own. Parents may relax and read in the Community Center’s soft-seating area, go food shopping, or grab a coffee in the café. Giant even has a supervised playroom for ages 3-9. Please call 215-885-5180, ext. 28, if your child cannot attend a session. We will have library books or bring your own book. Our dogs are certified by Abington Memorial Hospital’s Animal-Assisted Therapy Program, Therapy Dogs International and other organizations.
