the Gardeners

As you can see, the elements we think of as being 'gardener' only start to emerge around Edwardian/Victorian era (see also next few images). However, we could use some of the elements without making it 'of that era' eg. suspenders, neckerchief, wool/sacking cloth, rolled up sleeves
what signifies 'gardener' here in this later period, is really only rolled up sleeves, pipe & work boots combined with reg clothes. The work boots won't be any use to use & would def put us in a period, and not be at all suitable for Fools!
any period earlier than Edwardian, there is no identifiable 'gardener', all clothes look like 'working clothes'
Tho this man is man is reenacting 'medieval gardener' we wouldn't know that except for maybe the type of tools he wears? We could think about this as a devise (tho they would have to be removed before any movement)
same as last image - he just looks like 'peasant'. Do you like the style tho?
baggy seated pants are always funny?
This one doesn't appeal to me at all, because it makes him look so 'simple' (?) tho the diff coloured socks would be very 'Fools'?
this is a good stylised look I think we can use
and this one too. Good elements - gaiters, long smock, underskirt, shapeless hats
i like the arm gaiters, straw hat & wimple
I like this 'seeding apron', could we use it somehow? I also think it might be nice to have these simple coif caps under straw hats?
Poss palette for base gardeners? (Marin Shakespeare's Much Ado)
I love this photo & had it in mind for the pantomine feel of the 'costumed part'....It's so brilliant that they are so half hearted - spot the regualar dress shirt, watches, fag etc! This type of attitude would work well for our gardeners I think! 1964, London, England, UK --- The Beatles in costumes for a Christmas pantomime.
