TSN Irish History Celebration

TSN Ministries celebrated Irish history with a trip to the Irish Channel in Bowie, MD. We sampled a variety of traditional Irish recipes like Corned Beef and Cabbage, Shepherd's Pie, Leek Soup, Irish Sausage, Chicken Pot Pie, Bread Pudding, and table-top S'mores. To top it off, we were greeted by the owner and an Irish tenor sang Irish folk songs through the night.

TSN CHRISTmas Celebration 2011

Halloween Alternative 2011

The Sparrows' Nest Ministries hosted a Halloween Alternative to local teens who wanted to enjoy the day with fun activities and some old-fashioned excitement . . . a scavenger hunt, bobbing for apples, making caramel apples, carving pumpkins, and making s'mores. Thanks to supporters and local businesses (Safeway, Giant, and Wegman's for your assistance! It is such a joy to serve the teens!

The Sparrows' Nest Ministries again provided school supplies to families in need in the Landover area in which we serve as mentors during the school year. TSN End-of-Year Retreat 2011

TSN was able to take six students who participated in the year-long after-school mentoring program for a week away for spiritual growth, personal challenge, and good old fashioned fun! We stayed in a townhome in Fernwood Resort in the Poconos and lived as a "family of eight" for six days . . . including daily devotions, sharing chores, horseback riding, paintballing, waterpark fun, swimming, hiking, playing board games, watching movies, and visiting unique local shops. Thanks for all the prayers and support!

TSN took several of our students bowling Sunday afternoon as one of our many outings for the year. it is so good to see the kids out having fun and interacting with one another. it is also good to witness their behavior as opposed the the other teens in our presence! TSN New Orleans Mission Trip

TSN was blessed to bring a team of students from TSN and Woodstream Christian Academy along with some adult mentors to serve the folks of New Orleans once again.This was our sixth trip to Central City since Katrina and each time we seem to come away more blessed than the time before.I will be adding more pictures as others send them to me. Celebrating Irish History

TSN celebrates Irish history in the month of March and we desired to share some of that rich history with some of our most deserving students with a traditional Irish meal. The folks at The Irish Channel in Crofton, MD hosted our group and treated us very well as we received a variety of foods and experienced true Irish culture (music included). TSN Holidays 2010

Through the HOLYdays, TSN was able to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the families we serve each week and then some! With the partnership of local businesses (Safeway, Giant, Wegmens, and CVS), local ministries (Woodstream Church, Woodstream Christian Academy, and Bema Outreach), and many sacrificial families and individuals, we provided food baskets and family meals at Thanksgiving, and coats, toys, school supplies, hats, gloves, and a community CHRISTmas celebration to celebrate CHRIST's birth. We are so grateful that we made it through and put a smile on the hearts and faces of so many. Thank YOU for being the hands and feet of Jesus! God knows your kindness and is pleased that you sacrificed to help others feel His love!

TSN Backpack Giveaway 2010

Thanks to local stores, politicians, churches,ministries, and other volunteers, TSN was a ble to serve landover families with backpacks, school supplies, snacks, and even some clothes for the coming school year. Thanks to the Bowie Town Center and Fairwood SAFEWAY stores, Highbridge CVS, Bowie, GIANT, Woodstream Church, Bema Outreach, Delegate hopeful Mr. Ken Williams, who made this day possible. 2010 Awards Ceremony

TSN presented our after-school Resource Center students with awards and certificates for their diligence over the course of the year. The Glenarden Public Library was the site. Besides certificates, there were movie passes, McDonald's gift cards, and savings bonds awarded. Thanks to all our supporters and families of the children. We thank God to be able to serve these families and look forward to our third year at the center in landover beginning with our Backpack Giveaway in August!

Last Days 2010

As we wound down the after-school Resource Center programs for the 2010 school year, we celebrated with our first high school graduates, played card games, video games, and outdoor fun, and enjoyed pizza, cookies, ice cream and more. God truly blessed us and all the families we were honored to serve!

Dodge Park Community Easter Egg Hunt

TSN hosted a community Easter Egg Hunt in our service area April 3rd. The kids dyed eggs and we had the traditional egg hunt with several special prizes besides the candy; served hot dogs, drinks, chips & cupcakes; and shared the Resurrection Story. Twenty-three children and three parents stopped by to take part. Our older kids helped to prepare and serve. This brings us to a total of 2,048 individuals served in 11 years of ministry in the area.

TSN/WCA Community Christmas Celebration project

On December 12, 2009 TSN and the 10th Grade homeroom of Woodstream Christian Academy sponsored a Community Christmas Celebration at Woodstream Church to honor the children and families we serve throughout the year. The entire community did indeed participate as Safeway at Fairwood, CVS stores of Bowie, Home Depot of Bowie, Giant,and others donated food, toys, and supplies to make the familes' Christmas special. The 10th grade students of WCA assited TSN in gathering donations of cash, gift cards, and toys for the families. Some volunteered to serve at the event. What an experience to be apart of...a real community celebration and Jesus was the Reason!

TSN's Annual Football, Food, and Fun Event

TSN's Annual Thanksgiving Football, Food, and Fun celebration: TSN sponsored our traditional Thanksgiving Football, Food, and Fun Day November 21. Seniors from Woodstream Christian Academy helped serve up fun, food and even a little football. It was a great event for the entire community! More than 30 people (parents and children) participated.

Fall 2009 Events

We have had several opportunities to get out and about this Fall with our children thanks to so many generous individuals families, and local businesses. We now minister to more than 20 children ages 6 through 18 at the Resource Center in Landover, MD each week. We have been blessed to travel to Bowie, MD for the Jonathan Sperry movie in September courtesy of Woodstream Church and visited the Duke Ellington School of the Arts as guests of ARK Jammers in October. We have had several other activities at the Center. Enjoy the photos and consider supporting our work!

Woodstream Church Vacation Bible School 2009

I (Jerry) had the opportunity to work with Woodstream Church's VBS team and also was able to teach the five-year-old boys class as well. What fun we all had sharing the Gospel, challenging one another to "go lead, go risk, go tell, go obey and go serve"! The final night culminated in a community cook-out and family celebration. I love VBS...it's the anniversary of my accepting Christ as my Savior and Lord back in 1993! Thanks to all!!! Enjoy!

TSN End-of-Year Retreat Ocean City, MD

Jerry and Tamara travelled to Ocean City, MD with deserving children from TSN's year long mentoring program. With the support and prayers of many ministry friends, they packed up their truck and enjoyed a five-day retreat to both pratice skills learned throughout the year and to have some well-deserved fun! Morning devotions, meals as a family, time at the pool and at the beach, and visits to the famous "Boardwalk" made for an enjoyable and educational experience for us all! Even though we had to adjust plans due to lack of funding, we praise God for all that occurred...even our truck breaking down while in O.C. At least God got us their and back safely! God bless you all and please keep praying for TSN and the children we serve.

Father/Child Brunch 2009

I was blessed and privleged to speak at Woodstream Church's Father/Child Brunch on June 20. It was such a thrill to be with more than 40 children and their dads and grandads and to celebrate our roles as father, mentor, leader, and teacher. It was also a time to praise our heavenly DADDY for being sp merciful to each of us!

TSN's Family Fitness Day

To culminate our two-month-long concentration on nutrition and fitness, TSN Ministries sponsored a Family Fitness Day in the Landover Community of Dodge Park for the children we serve weekly. Allan Stevenson, at Deacon at our church (Woodstream Church in Mitchellville, MD) and a certified fitness trainer spoke with the kids and led them through as series of "fitness tests". We also enjoyed hot dogs (chicken...not pork!) from the grill along with snacks and water. We found out two things: fitness is fun and we all can improve our fitness habits! Thanks to Deacon Allan for lending his expertise and to the kids for participating.

End of Year Awards Program

TSN Ministries celebrated the end of our first year of outreach in the King's Square Apartment complex this past Thursday, June 18. All children received participation certificates and special awards were given for attendance, honor roll, special improvement and more. We shared a meal of chicken, mac&cheese, salad and sweets. We feel so blessed to be a part of these families' lives and we ALL have learned so much throughout the year. Plans are to expand the summer program to three days a week, three hours a day...so pray as to how you can partner with us and that others within the community will step up and join to help us serve.

Convoy of Hope

A team from Woodstream Church joined thousands to serve needy families at Clifton Park in Baltimore, MD, my home town. We headed out at 6:45 am and arrived in Baltimore before 8 am and assisted in serving food, clothing, medical screenings, haircuts, kids moon bounces, music, and fun for all. It was so good to see the BODY at work and meeting basic needs of life. Despite the ankle deep mud, I believe God was pleased and I know we were blessed to be a part of it all!

TSN at Camden Yards (Orioles)

Thanks to Nick Markakis and The Right Side Foundation (http://www.rightsidefoundation.org/) TSN was able treat 15 children and three chaperones to the Orioles game on Thursday May 28. Woodstream Christian Academy provided the use of their school bus and Mr. William Bush donated his time to drive. What a night it was as we enjoyed Mr. Markakis' private suite, received a visit from the Oriole Bird, and oh yes, the O's beat up on the Tigers too! God is so good and He is putting good people in our path in assisting us in serving these children. Thanks to everyone involved!

Memorial Day 2009

We celebrated a day early with our kids at home. Finally had them all together at one time and what a fun time with was! God is truly at work in each of us and we celebrate His patience, His grace, His goodness toward us! Though not perfect, our goal is to bring Him glory and alow Him to have His way through us as we press on in this journey! Six Flags Outing

After delaying our planned trip to Six Flags America in Mitchellville, MD from May 3 (due to rain) we were blessed with a beautiful day on Saturday May 9. Thanks to a generous donation of a 15-passenger van for the day, we loaded up 12 children, snacks, and drinks as part of the "Coasters for a Cause" fundraiser. Thanks to everyone who supported this event through sponsorship, donations, prayer, and the purchasing of tickets. The children represented TSN in fine fashion and had a memorable time.

TSN Field Trip May 3, 2009

TSN gathered up 14 of the children we serve on Sunday May 3 for a planned trip to Six Flags America in Mitchellville, MD. It had been raining off and on for three-four days, but we went on with our plans. Using two vehicles, we picked up the kids at 9:30 am (thanks to Mr. Eric for lending us his 15 passenger van!) and worshipped together at Woodstream Church and the children met Pastor Bob Wingfield after service. Six Flags had closed by noon due to the rain, but "Plan B" went into effect: Chuck E. Cheese! Where else can you go with a van full of children on a rainy day? TSN Easter Egg Hunt 2009

TSN hosted nearly 30 children and their parents at its 3rd Easter Egg Hunt. This year, we invited neighbors from the Resource Center location in Landover, MD. Tamara served grilled hotdogs, potato salad, cookies, chips and drinks. Though it rained through the day,TSN staff and volunteers stuffed plastic eggs full of candies and hid them along with twelve "Resurrection Eggs" throughout the Center. Jerry gathered the kids and explained each "Resurrection Egg" as the children held up the crown, nails, leather strap, spear, and other significant pieces of Jesus' crucifixion: even the stone and cloth from the tomb! One mom commented that she had never heard "the Story" that way. Praise God...she asked to attend our church in the future! We distributed 10 baskets full of toys and candies to kids in various categories. Keep TSN in your prayers. Thanks to those who financially and prayerfully supported this event.

TSN's (Family Village Initiative) Bowling Outing

TSN treated several of our most deserving students to an afternoon of bowling at the Crofton (Maryland) bowling lanes. Everyone had a wonderful time and the children handled themselves in a very mature manner. In fact, they set the standard for all the kids at the bowling alley! Jerry and Tamara were very proud of the children as we all bowled a few games and enjoyed pizzas and drinks. We gave the alleys (and gutters) a real workout!

A Lil' Bit O Irish History

We celebrated the Irish with the kids and shared some interesting facts and myths concerning St. Patrick, leprechans, pots of gold, slavery, and a rich Gaelic history dating back to the early centuries following Christ. We feasted upon green apples, green grapes, green-sprinkled sugar cookies, and green kool-aid. No time for the beef, cabbage, and potatoes!

TSN's "A Taste Of Africa"

The Sparrows' Nest Ministries staff and guests attempted to present a bit of the rich African and African-American culture to the children in our mentoring program in Landover, MD. For two days (Feb. 19 and Feb 23) we shared historical facts, discussed geographical lessons, tasted a few African dishes, read Biblical passages (Acts 8), and even dressed the part! Enjoy...and prayerfully learn a fact or two! I know we did!!!

Christmas Celebration in DC

The Government Printing Office hosted nearly 100 children (TSN kids and others we invited) providing Happy Meals from McDonald's, music, a visit from the Capital Police and their Bomb-Detecting Shepherds, wonderful gifts, and a special visit from Santa. To top it off, they raffled bicycles for each age-group too! What a fun-time for parents, kids, and volunteers!

TSN Mentoring Program

As a part of our mentoring program in the Dodge Park community (Landover, MD) TSN is attempting to show our children the proper etiquette when dining. This was our first attempt as we prepare the kids to expand their horizons and begin to think in terms of what will be, not what things are now. This first session was at our home. More seeions will be planned in the future, leading up to a dinner out as a "family"! As our children grow and mature, we feel confident God has big things in their future and we desire for them to be ready. Some of these children will be with us at our Gala on December 5, 2008!

Back 2 School Giveaway

TSN sponsored a Back 2 School backpack giveaway in Landover,MD and sponsored 20 children from pre-school through high school age. The boys and girls received a backpack, pens, pencils, notebooks, glue, crayons, rulers, and even a few drink boxes and snacks to start off the first week of school. While the staff was speaking with parents and signing their children up for the mentoring program beginning September 15, the kids played video games, worked on the computers, and enjoyed chips, popsicles, and drinks.

TSN Community Clean-Up and Family B-B-Q in Landover, MD

TSN Ministries hosted an area clean-up and B-B-Q for residents in the apartment complex where the Resource Center is located. We had a great (hot!) time walking the complex. picking up trash here and there, and then giving away free hot dogs, chips and drinks to residents. We had an opportunity to speak with the children, their parents, and give then information concerning the Resource Center activities and even give them a tour of the Center. Oh yeah, the water gun battles were fun too!

TSN "Olde Towne Community" Promotional DVD Filming

TSN staff and the Board Chairman spent the weekend (the entire wekend!) filming a promotional DVD describing the planned Olde Towne Community project for Prince George's County, MD. This will be the site where we'll bring children from at-risk to at-home, one family at a time...Lord willing! Please pray for this project.

TSN Easter Egg Hunt

TSN MInistries hosted an Easter Egg hunt for more than 20 children ages 2-12 and their parents in Dodge Park Maryland. The children hunted for eggs, brought them into the Community Resource Center, shared candies and drinks, chose various prizes and heard the Resurrection Story by way of the Resurrection Eggs. Ministry Visits to North Carolina

Tamara, Michael, and I travelled south to visit some of our past "TSN kids" and to visit and update current supporters who have re-located to various parts of North Carolina. We had a wonderful time celebrating, accomplishments, praying, sharing stories, strengthening friendships, and meeting possible new ministry partners. What an encouraging time as we drove from Raleigh, to Clayton, to Smithfield, then to Charlottes and various areas there. God's family is huge and His love is alive!

The Beginning of TSN Ministries

Tamara and I met these twins (Lizzelle and Gizzelle) while on our first mission trip together in St. Vincent, West Indies. Our concern for these girls flamed our desire to serve at-risk children and though we could not come to work with these girls again, the Lord began to build The Sparrows' Nest Ministries, Inc. With the aid of Pastor Verrol Blake, Pastor Bob Wingfield, Pastor Harry Cook, Pastor Jonathen Bailey, Minister Roland Lee, Pastor Carlos Martinez, Pastor Alozo Outzs and many more caring individuals and families, TSN Ministries was fully incorporated as a viable 501 c ( 3 ) non-profit orginization operating out of the state of Maryland.
