AIA Architecture Week 2012

On September 25th, the JICC offered patrons a self-guided tour of the Old Ambassador's Residence and Ippakutei Teahouse on the Embassy grounds as part of AIA Architecture Week 2012. Thanks to all who visited, the event was a great success!

Katsucon 18

On February 17th, 2012, the JICC dropped by Katsucon 18 to promote Japan and Japanese culture! There were many anime and manga fans there hailing from all across the country, and many cosplayers dressed in elaborate and detailed costumes. Take a look for yourself!

Nengajo Design Contest 2011-12 Submissions

For the JICC's second annual Nengajo Design Contest, we encouraged participants to create designs celebrating the kizuna, or bonds of friendship, between Japan and the U.S., as well as the centennial anniversary of the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the city of Tokyo to Washington, D.C. This year's contest featured great submissions from all over the world. Take a moment to enjoy all of the spirited designs!

SportsUnited Reception

On August 15th, 2011, the Japanese Delegation to SportsUnited visited Ambassador Fujisaki's residence. During the reception, the delegates were treated to dinner, a quiz, and a round of Bingo, and the Ambassador was treated to a soulful performance of the Soran Bushi. Take a look!

Nihongo Hiroba

On August 2nd and 9th, students from around the Washington, DC metro area gathered at the JICC for Nihongo Hiroba, a Summer Get-Together for Young Japanese Language Students. During the program, they had the opportunity to play games like Scrabble, and to speak in Japanese to sharpen their language skills while learning more about Japan. Please enjoy the pictures!

Otakon 2011

This year the JICC attended Otakon 2011 in Baltimore, setting up a tent for the Otakon Matsuri on July 28th, and partaking in the convention July 29th, 30th, and 31st. A range of activities took place at the JICC tent, including giveaways, contests, and crafts, all of which you can see in this album. A number of Otakon participants and their wonderful costumes are also featured. Please enjoy!

Kids World Cinema

The JICC was pleased to participate again in the Kids World Cinema festival. After taking in "Coluboccoro" from Japan and "The Whistle" from Senegal, the young cinephiles were able to try their hands at some origami.

NHK Symphony Orchestra Visits Hendley Elementary

As part of the Embassy Adoption Program, the NHK Symphony Orchestra (Japan’s oldest) visited Hendley Elementary last week. Not only were the kids and teachers treated to a beautiful concert, but the members of the wind quintet even explained the differences between each of their instruments and answered questions.

JETS Cheerleaders Perform at Whitman High and Visit Embassy

The JETS, an award-winning Fukui Commercial High School cheerleading team, made a stunning appearance at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda last month. They first made a visit to the Embassy of Japan, and then went on to perform at Whitman with the school's own squad. Days later, the JETS competed at the NCA/NDA All-Star National Championship in Texas, where they won first place in their division!

Nengajo Design Contest 2010-11 Submissions

Oshogatsu, or the New Year’s holiday, is a very special time in Japan. Much like the Christmas and holiday greeting cards exchanged in the West, nengajo are an important part of Japan's New Year festivities. This year, the JICC decided to spread a little holiday cheer by holding its first Nengajo design contest - here are the great submissions!

Seika Girls High School Band Concert

On their way to the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago, six time winner of the All Japan Band Competition, the Seika Girls High School Band, made an appearance at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, VA. Joined by The United States Air Force Band's Brass Quintet and Col. Arnald D. Gabriel, Conductor Emeritus of The U.S. Air Force Band, they put on a show that caught the audience completely off-guard with its theatricality. Their performance included “popstage,” mixing traditional orchestra music with colorful costumes and festive dances. They closed with a combined performance with the Bishop Ireton Wind Ensemble.

Foreign Minister’s Commendation Ceremony for Ms. Mary Baskett

Ms. Mary Welsh Baskett, former Curator of Prints at the Cincinnati Art Museum, is a specialist in both Western and Japanese prints and has written extensively on the graphic arts. She has also served as adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati and has owned the Mary Baskett Gallery for nearly three decades. A collection of pieces from her own wardrobe was on display at the Textile Museum in Washington, DC from October 2009 until April of this year in “Contemporary Japanese Fashion: The Mary Baskett Collection,” one of the museum’s most popular exhibits. She is being recognized for her achievement in contribution to cultural exchange in the field of art between Japan & the United States.

Architecture Week: A Moment - Tokyo Under Construction Presentation

Experience Tokyo’s evolving landscape in this stylish multimedia presentation by photographer Hiroyuki Suzuki. Explore the raw edges and starkly beautiful landscapes of oft-forbidden construction sites through a mélange of images, video, fashion, and music. By training his lens on the exuberant energy inherent to the construction process, Suzuki captures the beauty of incompletion that stands in stark contrast to the functional beauty of finished structures. Having planned and produced fashion shows for designer Junko Koshino at Paris Fashion Week and around the world, Suzuki’s work highlights the unseen parallels between two seemingly separate worlds: fashion and construction. Mr. Suzuki will be on hand to answer questions and discuss his rare art of capturing cities under construction.

Architecture Week: Tour of Ippakutei Teahouse & The Old Ambassador's Residence

Celebrate Architecture Week 2010 with a visit to one of Washington's most spectacular historical houses: the former Residence of the Ambassador of Japan. Built in 1931 and designed by the architectural firm Delano & Aldrich, the Georgian revival style residence is characterized by a sense of modesty, proportion, symmetry, and balance.Hidden on its grounds is an authentic Japanese teahouse named Ippakutei, the “Teahouse of 100 Years”. Considered the greatest of its kind outside of Japan, it was built to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the Japan-US Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1960.

Love at the National Zoo

7,000 miles is a long way to travel to find love, but that’s what five Japanese giant salamanders are hoping for through their participation in the only breeding program for the species in the U.S. It’s a leap of faith for these five romantics recently acquired by the National Zoo from the Hiroshima City Asa Zoological Park, but the keepers at the Zoo are working hard to ensure the right conditions for sparks to fly. http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/jicc/JapanNow/EJN_vol6_no8.html#Article5
