Concept of the Casing Detail. We Talked the owner into Tapered Casing
This new Rigid Vac is really a great buy. No Festool...But its got amazing power! and its pretty quiet. Not bad for $99.00 on sale from 199.00 ;)
here is our setup
Sanding and Track saw table Outfitted with our Fein for dust collection
this is the mock up we tacked up for the HO... he loved it!
Cutting Plinth Blocks using a repeditive stop for the 45* chamfering
Of course Biscuiting for automatic reveal line up and extra reinforcing
all edges eased with 220grt and round over block plane
tapered caseing window trim in the corner looks just fine!
oh yeah Biscuit the sill to the casing again automatically lines it up and reinforces the joint
snaps right into place
Notice all the Sheet rock grief?! what a hassle! well our solution is...
line up the window details on the out side edge of the window frame...
like so...
we had our supplier mill us some scribe strips to put in place to cover over the sheetrock proudness!
23g brads hold the scribe perfectly
Even though the window is close to the wall...this detail looks fantastic. I NEVER like to redimension the detail to fit. I like keeping the same throughout even though you run into this. It looks great!
Cutting a relief in theback of casing helps a ton with dealing with Dry wall inconsistencies...Most manufactured trim already has this relief but on custom trim like this...we have to make our own. Oh yeah..hook a vac up..it helps so much! Otherwise you will have a huge mess
every thing on this table gets hooked to that Fein vac
This is where everthing plugs in the to auto starter for the vac. So when each tool starts so does the vac.
I cant afford the look of unsightly finish screws or many face nails so PL'ing the trim to the sheet rock is Ideal and use minimal 18g or 16g finish nails. NO 15g!
Greene & Greene/Stickley Inspired Tapered detail
emphatic joints are a must with Craftsman style this is 3/4 casing with 5/4 header caps. The reveal looks great and adds shadow lines. This is a standard detail in a historical craftsman.
PL premium poly glue helps a ton and makes us shoot half as many face nails!
Track saw for tapers! This is my favorite tool!
Dad usually gets to use it as he cuts for me
Major sheet rock letting in...This is where experience pays off....
This is why i hate to do it...but its my job to make it look the best as the finish carpenter
perfect let in...Perhaps better framing is in order next time
Pre-assembly is what I prefer...But with how bad the sheet rock is on this job, makes that technique not ideal, unfortunately...
always orient your nailing with the grain on finish material.
The nail holes will appear smaller
This is the start of a router template Im using for the baseboard scarf joints
Pocket screws act as clamps to keep these board tight
