Bizarre Bazaar

Part of my job recently has been to compile a comprehensive (or seemingly so) packing list for new teachers arriving in Beijing. I've realized, though, that it's unnecessary: you can buy everything you would ever need--from socks to rabbits, fake designer bags to snakes--on the sidewalk near the subway.

St. Patty's Day Bubble-Blowing Bonanza

St. Patrick expelled the snakes (or infidels, whatev) out of Ireland. While many folks around the world celebrate this day by going to mass or having a day-long booze fest, Mike & I sat at the kitchen table and blew bubbles.

Hohhot Buddhist Temple

Before the DragonLady named Spring refused to pay us and sent us back to Beijing and, actually, even before she banished us to Eerguna, she took us to a Buddhist Temple in Hohhot. The place was full of monks on cell phones and optical disc drives. My spirit did less than soar to heaven.

Lantern Festival - CCTV Fire

On the final day of the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration, I launched a lantern into space, watched an offensive amount of fireworks detonated in front of the Workers' Stadium/Outback Steakhouse, and hit the CCTV Complex fire scene. Perhaps one of the best nights Beijing has had to offer me.
