Comet Lovejoy-26, 27, 28-12-11

After several tropical storms and cloudy skies, a brief clear spell from 02.30 until after 04.00am. Comet tail imaged from front patio outside the OctaDome. Trees help with size and the Milky Way to the right gives the comet location. Rising earlier each morning with nucleus just clearing tree line as sky brightens. All single frames unless otherwise noted.

Partial Solar eclipse Nov-24-25-2011

A 2% partial eclipse of the sun on 25th November between 6.30 and 7.08 local time. Two very clear days preceding the event, with cloud & sea mist spoiling the event.

Farewell French Astronomers BBQ Mt Canopus Observatory 27-8-11

Farewell to Christian & Rossie Coutures, who have been annual visitors to the observatory for the past 10-years. They have been an integral part of an international team of observers looking for exoplanets, with success, I might add.

International Year of Mathematics-2000 University of Tasmania

The University of Tasmania held open days to invited school groups to showcase some of the science subjects. The Astronomical Society was invited to take part. My first year as second time round President, so with two committee members, we put of a decent show with my video equipment & telescopes along with AST poster displays.

Astronomical Society's Observatories re- located to UTAS Mt Pleasant Radio Astronomy, Cambridge.

After many years sharing the University Mt Canopus Observatory location, the Astronomical Society of Tasmania Inc. needs a new home due to the closure of Mt Canopus later in 2011.(now delayed until late in 2012) The University of Tasmania School of Maths & Physics have been a long time supporter of the society, and have offered their site at Mt Pleasant along the Richmond Rd. Only a few minutes more from Hobart. Initial site works started by Phil Watkins (current President), Chris (newish member) & Shevill Mathers, UTAS Hon. staff member also AST member since 1968 and immediate past President/Newsletter Editor. www.shevillmathers.id.au

Total Lunar Eclipse-16-6-11

Taken under difficult conditions, thin haze/cloud getting thicker as the event progressed. Totality was near invisible to the naked eye. Long exposure through a driven Takahashi refractor allowed me to get these imgages.

Home Anodising System

A 2-gallon (7.5 litre system using Ron Newman Dyes and the Caswell LCD (Low Current Density) Technique. Acid concentration is 175g/litre = 100ml conc H2So4 per litre distilled/deionised water. Temp 68F for 90 minutes at 4.5 Amps approx.

Mt Canopus Spectrograph

This is a work in progress, which I became involved with in October 2009, building the fibre & hardware components both at the telescope Cassegrain end, and the fibre head assembly in the slit room etc. This spectrograph was originally used with 10" x 4" glass photographic plates. The distance from the fibre head in the slit room is 3.6m. This of course produces a very long spectrum, too long for a modern CCD 1004 x 1004 camera. Work is in progress with another optical system to produce a much shorter spectrum. More images will be posted of the fibre head and Cassegrain fibre head setup.

Qantas Menu 1968 & Aircrash-Mail/ letter

One of the early first passenger jet aircraft in service London to Australia, Boeing 707. Now on display in the Australian Qantas Air Museum. The menu was rather elegant, I wonder what serves in 2020? Mail from a 707 that crashed on take-off at Heathrow Airport a week later, the flight we were originally booked on!!

Lunar Eclipse-partial-26 June 2010

A cloudless sky during the day, then as the Moon started to rise, the cloud rolled in, and so it was until the eclipse was nearly over. It remained clear the rest of the night. Temp down to 0 degrees.

A fine day and an ideal opportunity to take a visiting Canadian astronomer, David Nataf, from Ohio State University, to the summit for an aerial view over Hobart and surrounding areas. Unfortunately, late afternoon at nearly the shortest day, soon had the clouds rolling in as the sun set behind us.

Southern skies-Static Shots

A really clear summer night, no breeze or mosquitoes. Tripod mounted unmodified Canon 450D with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens stopped down to f/2.5. Exposures ranged from 15 to 30 seconds at ISO 1600. Trees included as foreground to create a better picture and add scale. Other views with different cameras included from another album.

Grote Reber Museum & Radio Telescope 5-7-09

Grote Reber was the father of Radio Astronomy. He spent most of his life at Bothwell, Tasmania, an ideal location to develop his theories and build radio telescopes. A museum has been built and dedicated in his honour at the Mt Pleasant Radio Telescope facility near Cambridge, Tasmania. The access road runs through the Morilla Vinyard & Winery-the best of all worlds.

Southern Cross Observatory- -Dome August 1968, & February 2012

Having spent many years working in the open air in snow covered freezing conditions, the first task was to build dome to house the telescopes. The first dome was a traditional design, followed by the all rotating version with sliding slit panels. These operate independently and can be opened/closed to give wind protection depending on the altitude of the object/s being observed. Simple in design and very easy in operation.

RAF Hospital Wegberg, Germany 1957-1960

RAF Hospital located in a serene pine forest setting. Built in 1953 the design and finish quality was superb. Very modern, even by to-days standards. I enjoyed every minute of my time there from Dec 1956-59, as part of the small operating theatre team, mobile field hospital theatre and as a CASEVAC (Medical Air Evacuation) member. I would love to hear from anyone who spent time there. Cherished memories.

Constructing a 16-inch Newtonian Telescope

When I built the current 12" f/5 Newtonian, it was a test bed for various innovations prior to incorporating the modifications into a new 16" f4.5 Newtonian. Five years later and the new 16" is well under way as a unit construction. Each component is made and assembled , tested, then taken apart for painting & anodising where appropriate.
