Google Glass's XE6 camera software

This album is from my work on Google's Project Glass. Here is a <a href=https://plus.google.com/u/0/+projectglass/posts/9CdE6ysitvP>public post</a> about the XE6 camera software. Although I took some of these photographs, the work isn't really mine; it's by a team of talented engineers I have the privilege to lead within GoogleX.

Coast south of Carmel, May 2012

Road trip to compare two cameras: the Sony NEX-7 (APS-C) and the Olympus OM-D EM-5 (M43). A few observations: (1) Sony pictures (processed by Adobe Camera Raw) are more contrasty and saturated than Olympus pictures, so they look better. (2) The aspect ratio of micro-four-thirds is 4:3, while APS-C is 3:2. This affects the way you compose pictures. (3) The Sony 18-200mm super-zoom is sharper than the Olympus 14-150mm, but it's hard to be sure, since Sony pictures are more contrasty. (4) Prime lenses rock. My best pictures were taken with the Sony 16mm/2.8, Olympus 24mm/1.8, Panasonic/Leica 25mm/1.4, Olympus/Zuiko 45mm/1.8, and Leica Elmarit-M 90mm/2.8. (5) The Olympus camera using sensor stabilization rather than lens stabilization. This allows it to stabilize even my Leica manual-focus lenses. (6) The NEX-7's user interface makes it painful to use, and the inability to compare successive pictures while enlarged during playback is fatal.

Yosemite Valley, November 2011

All pictures taken with a Panasonic GF1 micro-four-thirds camera. Lenses were Panasonic 7-14mm, 14-45mm, 45-200mm, or Leica Elmarit-M 2.8/90mm or Summicron-M 2.0/35mm. Processing was done in Adobe Lightroom 3.5. Pictures are up to 1600 x 1200 pixels, so expand your browser window and click on Slideshow or Full screen. Although I captured many HDR sequences, neither Photoshop nor Photomatix Pro did a decent job of tone mapping them, so these images are all single exposures. Also, none of the images are stitched panoramas, and none contain local touchups (although I'm not opposed to doing so).

Alaska, August 2011

A visit to Vancouver, B.C. and Victoria, followed by a ferry voyage up the Inside Passage to Alaska, with side trips for kayaking, hiking, etc. All photographs were shot with a Panasonic Lumix GF1 unless noted otherwise, with processing done in Adobe Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5. The video (at the end of the album) was shot in 720p with the same camera and edited in iMovie '11.

Yosemite Valley, May 2011

A weekend in Yosemite Valley. My goals for this outing were to experiment with flowing water using neutral density (ND) filters (on a Canon 5DII), and to try out the Sony NEX-5 camera with 18-200 a superzoom lens. The ND experiments were reasonably successful. However, I was not happy with the NEX-5. It has a nice sensor, but the 18-200 lens is soft. More importantly, this camera has the worst user interface of any camera I have seen. Not only do common functions require fiddling in the menus, many functions are disabled in some UI states. For example, If I try to enable 3-shot HDR mode, it may tell me that this function is disabled, but it doesn't say why. The answer is to go back up the menu tree, descend another branch, switch from RAW+JPG to JPG-only, then return to the first branch and enable HDR mode. The interface is full of these problems. If computational photography cannot be presented to consumers with easier-to-use interfaces, the battle is lost.

iPhone photography

This is a collection of pictures taken using iPhone cameras, beginning with the iPhone 4. People often justify cell phone cameras by saying that, "The best camera is the one you have with you." That's true, but the iPhone's camera is also a pretty good camera. Cameras like this will almost certainly destroy the bottom half of the point-and-shoot camera market, if not all of it, over the next five years.

Women's lacrosse, April 18

Versus St. Mary's. Stanford won the game. Canon 1D Mark III with 400/2.8 prime, with 1.4x converter at times, and 100-400 zoom for one shot. Having spent the March 6 game (see separate album) with a moderate telephoto lens (300mm), I decided to spend this game experimenting with longer focal length lenses (400mm and 560mm), tighter shots (i.e. closer subject distances), and lower F-numbers (down to f/2.8). Since depth of field decreases linearly with lowering F-number, quadratically with increasing focal length, and quadratically with decreasing subject distance, my choices made focusing much harder, or more dependent on luck.

Zurich and Paris

All pictures were taken with a Panasonic Lumix GF1, one of the new class of micro-four-thirds cameras. Although they have interchangeable lenses and an SLR-sized sensor (2x crop factor), these cameras have no reflex mirror or optical viewfinder. As a result, they are compact enough, and their lenses are small enough, to carry around a camera and 5 lenses in a bag the size of a lunch box. Moreover, they take Leica M lenses (with a suitable adapter), which are famously sharp. On this trip I used a Panasonic 7-14mm, 14-45mm, 45-200mm, 20mm/1.7 prime, and Leica 90mm/2.8 Elmarit-M. My favorite pictures have Photoshop-produced frames around them. I have uploaded these pictures at 1600 pixels wide, the maximum size Picasa Web Albums will currently display. To see them in sharp, unsampled glory, use a large screen and maximize the size of your browser window.

Informal tests of a Canon 5D Mark II full-frame SLR. Except for last dusk image, images were shot in "Large Fine JPEG" with "L" series lenses as indicated. Post-processing (in Photoshop CS4) included cropping, contrast enhancement, and slight sharpening of downsized images for the web. Last image was shot in RAW and post-processed as indicated.

Trip to India, December 2008

Best 50 out of 1200 photographs selected from a 3-week trip to Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Konark, Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, Corbett National Park, and Nainital. Except where noted, pictures were taken with a Casio EX-F1 digital camera. While the Casio is a revolutionary camera, offering 12x optical zoom and unique burst shooting modes, its sensor is small (1/1.8" diagonal), so shadows and sunset shots are noisy. Post-processing was performed in Photoshop CS4 and included stitching, cropping, cleanup (occasionally), rectification to undo perspective (rarely), and contrast enhancement. The images in this album are up to 1200 pixels wide x 900 pixels high, so maximize your browser window before viewing them. Finally, if you're using a Mac, then use Safari, not Firefox (unless it's version 3.5 or later). Otherwise, the images will look washed out. The image of buddhist monks discusses this issue further.
