19th Century Art in Bohemia (1790 - 1910)

A permanent exhibition of the Collection of 19-century Art of the Nation Gallery/St. George's Convent, Prague Castle. I will not attempt to explain much about them as I did not take notes. I took pictures of the ones I liked the most....which was hard because there were so many.

Cesky Krumlov - Day 3 (Fini)

Today is our last day. It has snowed heavily overnight and the world is beautiful! We decided to take a local bus to see the town that is too far to walk to. Which was a surprise, the rest of the town is quite small. We did another walk through Old Town to some new areas we hadn't seen yet. We caught the 5:00 PM bus back to Prague, with some sadness, I might add. I suppose you could say EVERYONE falls in love with Cesky Krumlov, and I was no different. Probably too small of a town to live in all the time, but definitely one to visit over and over again. Cesky Krumlov Day 2 - Castle

The Castle sits on a rocky promontory of the Vltava River and was constructed over the course of six centuries. There are also vast gardens with a maze and a summer house. This castle was first mentioned in 1253 as the House of Vitek. It then passed to the Rosenbergs, the Eggenbergs, and lastly was owned by the Schwarzenbergs from Germany. We decided to go to the Castle first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, it is closed in the winter, although you can walk through the courtyards. Cesky Krumlov - rest of Day 2

Highlights of the day: We had Chinese food for lunch in an old building which had previously been a Mexican Restaurant, so we ate with chopsticks while enjoying the decor of Mexico! We took a walk to see how "regular" people live in Cesky Krumlov that took up most of the afternoon. Cesky Krumlov has wonderful shops so we did some of that..and in the evening we went out to a bar/pub for a drink and capture some "nightlife". Which was pretty quiet. It continued to snow heavily and we enjoyed our walk back to the hostel...taking some side alleys and slipping, sliding and laughing like a couple of drunks! (not really - just caught up in the atmosphere and having fun). I LOVE this town! This is album 4 of 5. Cesky Krumlov - Krumlov House Hostel

We chose Krumlov House Hostel because TripaAvisor (whom we use regularly) gave it roaring reviews! Krumlov House was awarded “Best Hostel in Czech Republic” and “Best Atmosphere” in 2008 and 2009. I love their motto: "Cesky Krumlov is a small town that makes a big impression; Hostel Krumlov House is a small hostel with a big heart". We really know that is true after our stay for two nights. It might not appeal to everyone because It is a bit rustic, but in a very homey way. And it was squeaky clean.

Cesky Krumlov - Old Town part 1

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cesky Krumlov is famous for its Old Town, with 300 protected medieval buildings, and its castle complex, the second largest in the Czech Republic. Surrounded by rolling hills and the Vltava River, Cesky Krumlov's cobblestone streets wind past centuries old town homes, inns, shops, and cafes. Located in the southwest part of the Czech Republic, this picturesque city is home to about 14,000 residents. It is also home to the Eggenberg Brewery which has been brewing beer in Cesky Krumlov since 1630. Cesky Krumlov is a definite MUST SEE! This album is the first of five. Kampa Island, Prague

Kampa Island is a collection of 16th century gardens and watermills. Flour was milled in four mills; three of the mills still exist, and two still have their mill-wheels in place and turning. The first residential houses were built on Kampa Island at this time. Mostly poor people such as raftsmen and washerwomen lived here because the Vltava often flooded. Also bricklayers, carpenters and stonemasons so they could keep a watchful eye on the Charles Bridge and maintain it when needed. It was a center for pottery markets as well. It was not until the 17th that the area was named Kampa (campus meaning"field") by Spanish soldiers who tented on the island during the Battle of White Mountain (1620). Later several noble families built their residences around a former Baroque palace. Today it is a lovely place to stroll, away from the city noise.

Czech Museum of Music

The Czech Music Museum was a delightful discovery! We found it absolutely FANTASTIC! The exhibit is divided into keyboard, string, and wind instruments. (A total of 400 historical musical instruments) Some of the rare instruments on display: a hammer piano created most probably by F. X. Christoph around 1785 and played by Mozart during his first visit to Prague in January of 1787. Another was a violin of N. Amati, dating from around 1650 as well as an unusual instrument called a glass accordion! What made the tour so special was being able to hear samples of the instruments on earphones in each room. This was not a museum we wanted to hurry through, on the contrary; we found ourselves lingering.

SNOW!

Imagine, two people from "sunny" Greece, experiencing snow! We must admit it did snow once on Paros (yes!) but it only lasted for a couple of hours, while this snow here is "serious" snow! Michael was "itching" to try out his new boots, and I was "anxious" to go for a walk, so we put those ideas together and these pictures are the outcome! This walk is in our neighborhood. There are some lovely old houses about 2 blocks from us....come....walk with us....!

Sifnos Day 5

Sifnos is an entirely different kind of island than Milos and even Paros. It could easily be said it is my FAVOURITE! It is beautiful, green, and mountainous. But what impressed me is the cleanliness! No litter anywhere, the houses kept up, even the farms were tidy! Not overdone, just well kept. Sifnos is a potters island....and has been forever. Almost all pottery came from here. Also they had gold mines so their gifts to the Delphi Treasury were solid gold eggs! Sifnos has few tourists....and I think that keeps an island more pure and real Greek. Trip to Milos and Sifnos - DAY 1

We left Paros the morning of June 16 on Nel Lines for Milos and Sifnos. Five Days Holiday! We decided to go to Milos first and then to Sifnos. The ferry route was made stops at Serifos, Sifnos, Kimilos and then finally Milos, taking about 4 - 5 hours total. I choose to show these pictures by the day.....so you can see why we were exhausted when we got home! A Walk to Kamari Windmill

Sunday was a beautiful day so Michael and I decided to take our scooters to Kamari which is only about 1 mile away or less. Then we walked up to the windmill in the hills above the village. We found a delightful (?) discovery while up there...which the pictures will show. Afterward we finished off a wonderful day with an ouzo and mezdes (snacks) at a taverna near our house.

Kite Monday

This is the first day of Lent in Greece. Carnival ended yesterday (Sunday). Kite Day is is the following Monday and is celebrated as a National Holiday. Families go to the beach and fly kites and then picnic or go to tavernas and restaurants to eat grilled fish. We celebrated with lunch out also, and then went to Boutakas beach nearby and flew our kite.

Carnival in Aliki 2009

Carnival in Greece is an event that lasts for a few weeks prior to Lent. The biggest carnival is in Patras and is BIG, whereas Aliki's was small but BIG in spirit! People met at the church in Angaria and paraded down into our small village in costumes. Then they danced around the maypole! Adults and children intermixed with everyone cheering them on! Local wine and freshly barbecued souvlaki's were the order of the day.....here are some pictures I captured. Hope you enjoy them!

January 19th Walk

January 19, 2009....a beautiful sunny and mild day on Paros. Michael and I decided to take a walk out around the point to a pebbly beach, up and over the hill coming back down into Aliki. Going full circle. The walk takes about an hour and a half....including a short "lie-down" on the beach! We cheated by taking our scooters to the beginning of the path instead of walking all the way from our house. (Call us lazy!)

A Thanksgiving Day Walk to Agios Antonios

Thanksgiving Day is not celebrated here on Paros so Michael and I decided to spend the day climbing Kefalos hill to see the church of Agios Antonios on top. Here is a write up about the history of this hill... "East of Marpissa rises Kefalos hill, at the height of 200m. On top is the church of Agios Antonios which was built in the 16th century. Here, also, you can see the ruins of the Venetian Castle which was built in the 15th century. According to history it is the castle where the Venetian Monarch Somarippas defended unsuccessfully against the Turk, Barbarossa, who destroyed it. Today locals sincerely believe that the church of Agios Antonios watches over them every time they go into the sea to fish." NOTE: (Agios Antonios = St. Anthony who is the Patron Saint of Shipwrecks, Mariners, and Fishermen. With the sea all around us, his patronage is much appreciated and this church is aptly named.)

Walk to Aghios Ioannis Klidonas

On the main road between Kostos and Lefkes I had often noticed an old church up in the hills. It looked like a ruin and has intrigued me for several years. I found the site on Google Earth and found the road in. I asked some of friends (Jack, Louise and Eddy, David) to go with Michael and I and was happy they agreed to go. We found the road going up with no problem. It was steep, but ended up being relatively a short walk (about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace). What we found was a bit disappointing, but we had lots of fun walking and talking. The day was hot, but not too hot and the view on top were great. We met for coffee in Parikia first, then drove together up to the beginning of the walk. Afterwards Eddy and Louise left to do necessary errands, but the rest of us went on to Lefkes for lunch. Everyone agreed they enjoyed it and called it a nice way to spend the morning.

A Sunday Afternoon on Paros

Michael and I have wanted to go to Margarita's Taverna for ages. Always something kept us from going. This particular Sunday, however, was a good time, so off we went! The entire afternoon and evening was fun...as we also went swimming at Santa Maria and ended it with a drink in Parikia at another of my favourite haunts; Tango Mar.

Ancient Delphi

FINALLY! Ancient Delphi! We spent 1/2 day at the ruins with time enough to visit the museum. Delphi is very impressive. There is a map that you can get that shows what you are seeing, and also pictures of what people think it looked like. WOW! What I kept thinking was....."how on earth did all this marble come up those mountains"? It boggles the mind. And to think that the Oracle was so well known by other civilizations. Delphi is definately a place to visit.

Arahova

In the afternoon on the day we went to Delphi, the decision was made to leave our hotel and take the bus to the village of Arahova. This village is the one just before Delphi. It looked very interesting with shops and windy streets. A bit higher up than Delphi...and had ski shops. The mountain called Parnassos is just above Arahova...so has summer and winter tourists.

From Athens to Delphi (village)

The trip to Delphi from Athens is about 2 1/2 hours with a quick stop outside of the village of Levadia. This album is of our arrival in Delphi (the village) and the fantastic scenery. Delphi is very mountainous....yet has an incredibly beautiful sea view in the distance! The ruins of Delphi are only a 10 minute walk from the village.

Trip to Delphi - First Stop Athens

For our 38th Wedding Anniversary and my birthday, we decided to visit Delphi, on Mainland Greece. This means leaving Paros and going by ferry to Pireaus which will take 4 hours. Once in Pireaus (port of Athens) we will travel by Metro (subway), bus, and foot to a hotel called Diva. This hotel is in an area of Athens called Kipsela and was recommended to us by a friend. We will spend only one night, take care of some business the second day and then by late afternoon take the bus to Delphi. This is that album....

Snow on Paros?

A raging snow storm that blanketed most of Greece over the weekend also continued into the early morning hours on Monday, plunging the country into sub-zero temperatures. Public transport buses were at a standstill on Monday in the wider Athens area, while ships remained in ports, public services remained closed, and schools and courthouses in the more severely-stricken prefectures were also closed. Scores of villages, mainly on the island of Crete, and in the prefectures of Evia, Argolida, Arcadia, Lakonia, Viotia, and the Cyclades islands were snowed in.
