More about the destination: Peak Height : 4020 feet. Type : Hill Fort Grade : Medium Harishchandragad is a hill fort in the Ahmednagar region of India. Its history is linked with that of Malshej Ghat, and it has played a major role in guarding the surrounding region. History The fort is quite ancient. Remnants of Microlithic man have been discovered here. The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references about Harishchandragad. Its origin is said to have been in 6th century, during the rule of Kalchuri dynasty. The citadel was built during this era. The various caves probably have been carved out in the 11th century. In these caves are idols of Lord Vishnu. Though the cliffs are named Taramati and Rohidas, they are not related to Ayodhya. Great sageChangdev (one who created the epic “Tatvasaar”), used to meditate here in 14th century. The caves are from the same period. The various constructions on the fort

Photowalk on Bassein Fort (13 Feb 2011)

The Portuguese established a fort in Bassein, present day Vasai, on the mainland just north of the Bombay archipelago. The fort was fronted by a harbour. With this as the main base, they built other smaller forts, and strong houses in many of the islands. In the 18th century the fort was attacked by the Maratha army under Baji Rao Peshwa, and fell in 1739 after a three year long campaign. The remains of the fort can be reached by bus or taxi from the Vasai railway station. The ramparts overlook Vasai creek and are almost complete, though overgrown. Several watch-towers still stand, with safe staircases leading up. The Portuguese buildings inside the fort are in ruins, although there are enough standing walls to give a good idea of the floor plans of these structures. Some have well-preserved facades. In particular, many of the arches have weathered the years remarkably well. They are usually decorated with carved stones, some weathered beyond recognition.

Bandhavgad

The Bandhavgarh Fort is situated in Bandhavgarh in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is located on the Bandhavgarh hill, rising 811 meters above sea level at the centre of the Bandhavgarh National Park. It is a surrounded by a large number of smaller hills separated by gently sloping valleys. These valleys end in small, swampy meadows, locally known as 'bohera'. from Bandhavgarh Fort's hill "vanganga" river was originated in "gondi" language "van"="goutr" means"surname", "ganga dhara"means stream that means "pandro" the surname of gond king was originate from "vanganga" that means "gond" king was the first ruler of Bandhavgarh Fort Various dynasties have ruled the fort: for example, The Mauryans from 3rd century BC, Vakataka rulers from 3rd century to 5th century the Sengars from 5th century and the Kalachuris from 10th century. In the 13th century, the Baghels took over, ruling from Bandhavgarh until 1617, when Maharaja Vikramaditya Singh moved his capital to Rewa.

Yeoor is a location in Thane district in Maharashtra, India that lies in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is known for its panthers and wildlife.Yeoor Hills (or also known as Mama Bhanja Hills) is a hill station of Thanaites. This naturally beautiful and pollution free area attracts lot of people. It is an unspoiled and pollution free area, carpeted by natural foliage and fauna. Yeoor Hills is home to about 78 known species of birds and about 12 different species of animals. Besides, it has the highest density of leopards in India. A trek through Yeoor Hills at the Thane end of Sanjay Gandhi National Park will be an enchanting experience.

Night Trek to Korigad with Gammon Springs

FortHeight : 3000 ft To the west of the Mulshi dam is the Mawal of Korbarase. The forts Korigad and Ghangad lay this region. Korigad is built near the Savashni Ghat, which connects Lonavla and Pali. This fort is well known due to its fortification that is still intact. To visit the forts in this region, one needs at least 3-4 days leisure. One can also go for a cross-country trek which includes Korigad, Ghangad, Tailbaila Walls, Sudhagad and Sarasgad. History : Shivaji Maharaj incorporated this fort in Swarajya along with Lohgad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Col. Prother invaded this fort but could not succeed even after prolonged fighting. Finally he succeeded on 14th March, by dropping a cannon ball where the ammunition was stored. Ganesha Chaturthi (गणेश चतुर्थी) , also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi(Tamil: விநாயக சதுர்த்தி ) is the Hindu festival of Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees in the duration of this festival. It is the birthday of Lord Ganesha who is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 20 August and 15 September. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period). While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Orissa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Outside India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal and by Hindus in the United States, Canada and Fiji.

Korlai Fort (Independence day) 15-08-2010

Korlai Fort (also called Morro or Castle Curlew) is a Portuguese fortification in the town of Korlai, Maharashtra, India. It was built on an island (Morro de Chaul) which guards the way to the Revdanda Creek. It was meant as a companion to the fort at Chaul. At this strategic position the Portuguese could use it to defend their province which stretched from Korlai to Vasai. This fort was built in 1521 by the Portuguese with the permission of the Ahmednagar sultanate.Korlai had been described by travelers as a "magnificent fortress as strong as any other in the world”. On the inland side - the only place where it was susceptible to be attacked it was protected by a ditch and could only be accessed by a drawbridge. The main entrance was guarded by a bronze lion and the highest tower by a bronze eagle. It housed 7,000 horses and as much men. The fort was taken by the Marathas who held it from 1739-1818.

NaneGhat (08-08-2010)

Height : 2500 ft. Type : Hill pass As the name suggests, this is a pass – a pass connecting the Deccan Plateau with its lower-lying neighbour, the Konkan strip. Consequently, this is a well used trail for locals to commute and it is a common sight to find local livestock clumsily navigating the steep and winding route o n our way. Naneghat is said to have been constructed by the Satvahan dynasty that ruled this region from 100BC to 300AD (approximately 350 years). The purpose of this pass was to connect Junnar, their chief town with their ports at Kalyan and Nalasopara. The main cave contains an inscription (in the Brahmi script prevalent in those times) informing us of thisw and giving further information about the Satvahan Dynasty.

Type: Hill Fort Height: 2500 Feet above MSL (Approx) District: Raigad Region: Karjat Base Village: Awalas In Maharashtra, there are number of forts named Songiri, one is in raigad district near Nagothane whereas other is in Pune district near Karjat. While studying the forts the main thing that you will observe is their location. Forts are mainly built at the base of the ghat [Pass], or at the top of the ghat. This fort in Raigad district is also exactly at the base of the Borghat. This fort is also known as fort of Awalas. The first 5 tunnels in the rail route near palasdari are dug into Songiri Hill.

Visapur Fort (20-06-2010)

Visapur Fort is larger and at a higher elevation than its twin fort- Lohagad. Within the fort are caves, cisterns of water, a decorated arch and old houses. In addition to a huge carving of Hanuman, there are also several temple dedicated to him scattered all over the place. Hanuman (or Maruti) was likely the patron deity of Visapur fort. There is a well which local legend says was built by the Pandavas..It takes two hours to walk along the winding Visapoor walls. It is high and strengthened by towers along the west face. In other parts, the wall varies from 3 feet thick fortification, backed by masonry platforms where the slope of the hill is easy, to a mere parapet of dry stone where the plateau ends in a precipice. Two massive bastions still flank the ruined central gate.

Bhairavgad / Bhairawgad / Bahirugad fort

Bhairavgad (Coordinates: 19°19'6"N 73°42'51"E) is located near malshej ghat and is one of the most fascinating adventure Treks.The top of the fort is created by the geological structure known as a dyke. The final stage on the rock massif is very fascinating. This fort must have been very important as it holds very strategic location looking on the ghat and paths to Mahali and junnar forts range. The exact origin of fort is not known but the style indicates that the forts dates back to Bhoj dynasty. Carved steps is the study point for this hill fort. Water tank at east side is also subject of study, how to preserve the water which is draining from the hill.

The best exercise to change our sedentary habits is the one we can and will do nearly every day. Cycling exercises the heart better than walking without the pounding of jogging. One can ride a bicycle almost anywhere, at any time of the year, and at low cost.

Tailbaila- Savashni cha ghat-Thanale caves

Savashni cha ghat is one of the major route used which connects the tailbaila and sudhagad fort and also to the The Caves of Thanale, which are believed to be 2,200 years old, can be reached by a 2 hour trek from Thanale village. The caves encompass an arrangement of about 20-22 halls, each meticulously provided with spaces in the form of benches and reclining platforms. The most aesthetic of the halls, which was once an important congregation center for prayers, features many Stupas. The last vestiges found in one of the caves point to an association with the erstwhile Mauryan dynasty. There are exquisite carvings decorating the ceilings and doors.

Ghangad

FortHeight : 3000 ft Ghangad is situated on western side of Mulshi River, which is called as Korbarase Maval. This fort is surrounded by Korigad, Telbaila and Sudhagad, but still lonely and separated. History : There is not much documentation explored about history of the fort. Earlier it was with Koli Samant, then with Adilshah and later with the Marathas Fascinating Spots : One can reach the fort by a path from left of the fort. As you enter from the devastated structure of big entrance, you can see some remnants of old palaces along with some water tanks which are now in very bad condition. You can see Sudhagad, Sarasgad and wall of Tailbaila from the fort, also Nandand Ghat, Savvashincha Ghat and Bhorpaychi Nal, which descend to Konkan.

Kalavantin Pinnacle

More about the destination: Type: Hill Fort Height: 1980 Feet Base Village: Thakurwadi Grade : Medium Kalavantin is known as the watchtower of the Prabalgad Fort. It is a adjoining hill(pinnacle) to the Prabalgad Fort. Shedung Fata is the known base village of Prabalgad and Kalavantin forts. The trek is of 2.5 hours from here. We are trekking up till the Prabal machi and from the village on machi we are taking the route to the kalavantin pinnacal. There are rock cut steps which lead us to the top of the Pinnacle.

Kalsubai - The Everest Of Maharashtra

Kalsubai (The Everest of Maharashtra) on 9th August 2009. Peak Height : 5420 ft. (1,646 mtrs.) “Kalsubai” is the highest peak of the Sahyadris in Maharashtra. At the summit there is a small temple of Devi Kalsubai. This being the highest peak, it commands a beautiful view. The vastly spread out backwaters of Bhandardara attracts ones attention from the top. To the north of the mountain range forts such as Ramsej, Harihargad, Brahmagiri, Anjaneri, Ghargad, Bahula, Tringalwadi, Kavnai can be seen. To the east one can spot Aundha, Vishramgad, Bitangad, to the west Alang, Madangad, Kulang, Ratangad (south west) and to the south Pabhargad, Ghanchakkar, Harishchandragad can be seen. Since Kalsubai is extremely famous, enough effort has been made to make this trek easy. There are steel railings, ladders & steps are made too at places where it is difficult to climb. There is a symbolic temple at the top which is made on in the remembrance of Devi Kalsubai.

Sudhagad

Sudhagad is one of the ancient forts in Sahyadri. It was the glory of Bhor state. [Fort Height : 2045 ft.] According to the Puranas, Sage ‘Bhrugu’ had stayed here and he had established the temple of Goddess ‘Bhorai’ on this fort. Sudhagad was included in ‘Swarajya’ in 1648. Shivaji Maharaj renamed Bhorapgad as Sudhagad. Later Sambhaji met Akbar (the rebellious son of Aurangjeb) in the ‘Pachchapur village’ situated at the base of this fort. Annaji Datto, Balaji Aavji Chitnis, his son Aavji Ballal and Hiroji Pharjand were all important persons in ‘Ashta-Pradhan Mandal’ of Shivaji Maharaj. Sambhaji has killed all of them in ‘Parli’ village near Sudhagad.

Rajmachi

Rajmachi is one of the many historical hill forts in the mountain SAHYADRI (the western Ghats). This a beautiful place surrounded by deep vales, high peaks, thick green forest and very pleasant climate. Rajmachi consists of two beautiful peaks namely 'Shrivardhan' and 'Manaranjan'. Shrivardhan and Manaranjan can also be considered as two separate forts. There is one small plateau in between them. A temple of 'Bhairoba' is very beautiful. Shrivardhan is 'Bale killa' of Rajmachi. It is almost 3000 feet high. But it was mainly built to keep watch on Konkan area. The other - Manaranjan is 2700 feet high. Manaranjan consists of strong walls, 3 doors and many water tanks. One can see Ulhas river, Dukes Nose (Nagphani), Karnala ,Matheran, Mahuli and Bhimashankar etc. The old caves of 'Kondhavi' on Rajmachi fort are worth to see. The way to fort is long but truly with a good view. One can enjoy a nice forest, Tungarli lake and many waterfalls as well.

Lohagad (The Iron Fort) (28/06/09)

It divides the basins of the Indrayani and Pavna and is situated on a side range of the Sahyadris. The Visapur fort is located on its eastern side. The four large gates of Lohagad are still in good condition and reasonably intact. Historical records show that in the later Peshwa period, Nana Phadnavis (1742-1800 AD) built several structures in the fort such as a big tank and a step-well (bawali). On the west side, there is a long and narrow wall-like fortified spur called Vinchukata (Marathi for Scorpion's tail) because of its shape. Lohagad has a long history with several dynasties occupying it at different periods of time: Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizamshahis, Mughals and Marathas. Shivaji captured it in 1648 CE, but he was forced to surrender it to the Mughals in 1665 CE by the Treaty of Purandar. Shivaji recaptured the fort in 1670 CE and used it for keeping his treasury.

Hadsar

Fort Hadsar, also known as Parvatgad, was constructed during the Satvaahanas and was heavily inhabited during that period. It is located on the outskirts of Ahmednagar (known commonly as Nagar) to control the trade route passing through Naneghat. Documentary evidences show that Hadsar was one of the forts exchanged in the 1637 treaty between Shahaji Raje and the Mughals. In 1818 the British forces conquered Junnar and the forts in this region. Like most other cases, main features of this fort were demolished by the british during their attack and later.

Chavand

These forts belong to Satwahan era. After the fall of Bahamani empire, the first Nizam Malik Ahmed captured this fort. Grandson of 7th Nizamshah Burhanshah the 2nd was imprisoned on this fort in 1594. In his attempt to save Nizamshah and thus to create his own empire. When Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured this fort, but he renamed this fort to "Prasannagad"After the fall of Maratha Kingdom, Britishers, as they did to other forts, destroyed construction on this fort as well. As an outstanding example, you can see half burried temple on this fort. The fort Chavand is famous for its 7 aligned water tanks. The names of these tanks are: 1. Brahmi, 2. Maheshwari, 3. Kaumari, 4. Vaishanvi, 5. Varahi, 6. Indyayani, 7. Chamunda. The temple of Goddess Chamunda is located on the topmost part of the fort.This fort is having Jeevdhan on west, Shivneri on east, route of Naneghat along the fort and Fort Hadsar on north side. This shows importance of geographical position of this fort.

Shivneri

Shivneri Fort is a historic military fortification located near Junnar which is around 105 km from Pune, a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is known as the birthplace of Shivaji also known as Shivaji Maharaj, who would go on not only to rule Maharashtra but to found the Maratha Empire. Shahaji, Shivaji's father, was a general in the army of the Adil Shah, Sultan of Bijapur. He was concerned for the safety of his wife Jijabai during her pregnancy as there was constant warfare going on.He,therefore moved his family to Shivneri fort. Shivneri is a highly defensible location, with steep rocks on four sides and a strongly-built citadel. Shivaji Maharaaj was born at the fort on 19 February 1630, and spent his childhood there. Inside the fort is a small temple of goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Shivaji was named so.He acquired all the skills and training on this fort which he used while establishing hindavi swaraj (self-rule).

Prabalgad (22-06-05)

Prabalgad is a distant and forgotten cousin of Matheran. At 2300 ft above the sea level, with a forest atop with a variety of birds and animals, it has all the ingredients for the making of a hill station. Thanks to the lack of resident water sources, this forest remains pristine and an ideal destination for true nature lovers and adventure seekers. The gigantic V shaped mountain (which is to the west of the fort) cannot be missed while traveling through the Mumbai Pune Express way of high way. It is also visible from the Matheran Sun Set point.

Sudhagad

Sudhagad is one of the ancient forts in Sahyadri. It was the glory of Bhor state. Initially, Sudhagad was called as ‘Bhorapgad’. During empire of Shivaji Maharaj this fort was named as Sudhagad. This fort is approximately 590 meters in height. Sudhagad is a huge fort. It's Dindi darwaja is a replica of Raigad's Maha darwaja. Gorakhgad (04-11-07)

Gorakhgad is a fort that can be done easily in a day, both from Mumbai and Pune. Though not famous for any historical events, Gorakhgad attracts trekkers due to its inviting pinnacles, which offer good opportunities for rock-climbing. This region of Gorakhgad and Machchindragad has a dense forest cover. Fort Gorakhgad is quite small in size. It was had strategic importance during the reign of Shahaji Raje. However, no major battle is recorded to have taken place here. It was used in Shivaji’s era to patrol the nearby region and was used as a stopover station during the journey to Junnar via Naneghat. Though small in size, there is enough availability water and a lot of space for accommodation. The fort gets its name from Saint Gorakhnath, who performed his “Sadhana” in this place.
