Maison des Palmiers (MdP) 1Aug06 * Location is approximately 100 meters from the Atlantic Ocean, at Latitude 32º 39.57’, Longitude 079º 55.94’; 3 houses between ocean & MdP somewhat protect from salt spray; drainage in sandy soil is excellent; last cold spell: 3 nights at -7ºC (+20ºF) in ’03/04 winter; lowest recorded temperature in over 50 years was -13ºC (+9ºF); there are ~1,500 known species in the Palm family Arecaceae (formerly Palmae) & we are planting over 50 species; conditions will not be hospitable for all; it will likely be too cold or humid for some & salt air will be bad for others; most palms started as seeds & passed through seedling stage in white framed 8’ by 12’ Rion greenhouse (May05, $2,500 USD including concrete base) kept between 10-50ºC (50-122ºF); Folly Beach, SC, USA.
