2013 VCBF Sakura Days Japan Fair - Vancouver, BC

Haiku Northwest History Posters

On the weekend of June 27 to 29, 2008, Haiku Northwest hosted a national meeting of the Haiku Society of America at Richard Hugo House, a literary arts center in Seattle. The posters shown here were created in square shapes, viewable from any direction, to fit under glass tabletops in the Hugo House cabaret, where we held our meetings. These posters tell the history of the Haiku Northwest group, with the bio of each coordinator, plus photos and other memorabilia from selected events. The posters were created chiefly by Connie Hutchison, who, with Haiku Northwest founder Francine Porad, was present at the group’s first meeting in 1988, and a loyal member since then. Use the Zoom tool to take a closer look at details of each photo.

Seabeck Haiku Getaway 2012

Haiku Northwest held its fifth annual Seabeck Haiku Getaway from October 11 to 14, 2012, at the Seabeck Conference Center in Seabeck, Washington. Michael Dylan Welch and Tanya McDonald directed the retreat, and our featured speaker was Paul Miller, currently treasurer for the Haiku Society of America and incoming editor of Modern Haiku magazine. We enjoyed other presentations and activities led by Johnny Baranski, Terri L. French, Barry George, Cara Holman, Dejah Léger, Tanya McDonald, Margaret McGee, Carole MacRury, Annette Makino, Jim Swift, Angela Terry, and Michael Dylan Welch, among others. One particular highlight was a craft workshop led by Fumiko Kimura and Frank Kawasaki, who taught us the art of sumi-e (brush painting), with much assistance from the Puget Sound Sumi Artists. Big Four Ice Caves, 12 August 2012

On 12 August 2012 we hiked to the Big Four Ice Caves, less than two hours northeast of Seattle. Clear blue skies, and quadruple the amount of snow than I've ever seen there before. Elevation is only 1,900 feet, so surprisingly low to see this much snow all summer long. Apparently this is the lowest-elevation permanent snowfield (not really a glacier) in the contiguous United States. Great to visit on a hot summer day when the snow is so cool (making some of these pictures a little foggy!). Highly recommended hike, easy for children!

On the last day I visited Cathedral Grove at Macmillan Provincial Park (nominated as one of the seven natural wonders of Canada), as well as Cameron Lake and Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park with Susan and Dave Constable.

Haiku Workshop at Padilla Bay Nature Reserve

On 23 June 2012 I led an all-day haiku workshop at the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Reserach Reserve near La Conner, Washington. For an hour in the afternoon, Glen "Alex" Alexander led us on a walk through the low-tide mudflats in Padilla Bay. Quite a few haiku resulted! Here are pictures from our wetland exploration. Haiku Society of America Meeting in Seattle, Washington, 12 February 2012

The Haiku Society of America held a national quarterly meeting in Seattle, Washington on 12 February 2012. These pictures show the morning haiku walk at Carkeek Park, and then the meeting itself at Seattle's Broadview Branch Library. neon buddha photo-haiga

These are photo-haiga I've created for some of my thousands of neon buddha poems. A haiga, traditionally, is a painting with a haiku done by hand in calligraphy. So these aren't those. But haiga has given rise to photo-haiga, which is a haiku typeset on a photograph, digitally, using computer software. These aren't those either. Well, they each feature one of my photographs, and each one has a poem that I've typeset onto the photograph, yes, but I don't consider the poems to be haiku. Haiku-like, maybe, but that's all. Hope you enjoy them!

Haiku Northwest - Port Townsend Joint Haiku Meeting - 18 June 2011

The seventh biannual joint meeting between the Seattle-based Haiku Northwest group and the Port Townsend Haiku Group also welcomed the Bellingham Haiku Group, the Vashon Island Haiku Group, and the new Mt. Olympus Haiku Society (which meets in Sequim). This was the first time that members from all five groups met together. We met first at Fay Bainbridge State Park for a haiku walk and lunch, then gathered at Bloedel Reserve for further walking and writing, and then met at the teahouse for a full afternoon of sharing, a kukai (voting for favourite haiku, anonymously), and other activities. My son Thomas attended for the first time, and in the kukai his haiku got more votes than mine!

Seabeck Haiku Getaway 2010

Haiku Northwest held its third annual Seabeck Haiku Getaway from November 4-7, 2010, at the Seabeck Conference Center in Seabeck, Washington. Michael Dylan Welch and Tanya McDonald directed the retreat, and Charles Trumbull, editor of Modern Haiku, was our featured speaker. At photo #202, I switched from using a Canon PowerShot SD400 Digital Elph (trying to be unobtrusive) to using my Nikon D90 (should have started with this in the first place).

Haiku Northwest - Port Townsend Joint Haiku Meeting - 2 October 2010

On 2 October 2010, Haiku Northwest and the Port Townsend Haiku Group held another joint meeting, meeting at the Olympic Hostel in Fort Worden (site of the 2005 Haiku North America conference). Activities included a tour of Point Wilson Lighthouse, a show-and-tell of an item that's meaningful to each person, a reading of lighthouse haiku from the book "Keepers of the Light" (edited and published by Christopher Herold), and a tribute reading to Doris Thurston from "A Circle of Light" (also edited and published by Christopher Herold). We held a kukai (haiku selection contest), many rounds of haiku reading, much socializing and snacking, and concluded the evening with dinner at the Banana Tree restaurant. Thanks to Christopher for organizing the meeting and for providing the beautiful weather!

Silver Notes—Sculptures at Seattle's Olympic Sculpture Park

I took these photos at the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park on 3 September 2010, one week after the SAM Remix art and dance event at the park, at which I was a featured poet. At 9:30 p.m. on 27 August, I led a "highly opinionated tour" of the sculptures, sharing poems I had mostly written spontaneously to each piece of art. I don't have any pictures of the tour (it was dark, anyway), but the photos here show all of the various pieces I wrote poems for. On 27 August 2010, I staffed a table (okay, counter) for 2,500 attendees at the Seattle Art Museum's Remix dance and art event at the Olympic Sculpture Park. Haiku on Sticks

On August 21-22, 2010, Haiku Northwest participated in the Nature Consortium's annual "Arts in Nature" festival at Seattle's Camp Long. Michael Dylan Welch and Tanya McDonald staffed a haiku table, and also set up a "Haiku on Sticks" installation, featuring 80+ haiku by members of the Haiku Northwest group. We placed haiku on bamboo sticks throughout the park for the thousands of festival visitors to enjoy. The poems motivated a lot of people to come up to our table to ask about haiku—and especially to ask why the poems were not in a pattern 5-7-5 syllables (we were happy to explain). All poems were selected from the Haiku Northwest online gallery of member poems at http://sites.google.com/site/haikunorthwest/poems-by-members. Poems are arranged alphabetically by last name, interrupted about halfway through by photos of our haiku table and the public haiku workshop led by Michael Dylan Welch. Thanks to all Haiku Northwest poets for contributing to this haiku installation.

Redmond Derby Days Poetry Table

On July 10, 2010, the SoulFood Poetry Night and the Redmond Association of Spoken Word joined Redmond Poet Laureate Rebecca Meredith to staff a poetry table at Redmond's Derby Days. We had a magnetic poetry wall, a typewriter, and drawings for poetic prizes, and also provided handouts promoting all of our poetry events.

HSA Haiku Panel at 2010 American Literature Association Conference

The Haiku Society of America, as a member organization of the American Literature Association, held its first panel at the 2010 conference, at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, California. Papers were presented by Ce Rosenow, George Swede, and Michael Dylan Welch. David Grayson chaired the panel. Afterwards, a group of attendees went to a nearby Indian restaurant.

Kubota Garden Visit - Haiku Northwest and Port Townsend Haiku Group

Twice a year, members of the Haiku Northwest group in the Seattle area hold a joint meeting with the Port Townsend Haiku Group. For our fourth meeting, on September 26, 2009, we met at Kubota Garden in South Seattle, visited the "Rainier Valley Haiku" sculpture, and then spent the balance of our meeting at the Rainier Beach Library. For dinner we went to Maya's restaurant nearby for Mexican food.

Two Autumns Reading 2009

The 20th annual Two Autumns reading in San Francisco featured Carolyn Hall, David Grayson, Michael Dylan Welch, and Garry Gay, with a book titled My Neighbor, edited by Paul Miller, produced by Linda Papanicolaou, with cover art by Naia. The reading was hosted by Rich Krivcher. This album show pictures I took of my trip from Seattle to San Francisco (via Portland, Oregon), visits to my old stomping grounds in Foster City, and many pictures of the reading itself. The pictures at the end show a visit to Blake Garden in Kensington, California, and my trip home, ending in a lovely sunset. Haiku North America 2009 in Ottawa - Part 1 of 3

This is the first of three albums presenting all the pictures I took, in chronological order, at the 2009 Haiku North America conference in Ottawa. These photos include visits to Parliament Hill and other tourist attractions (the sound and light show, the changing of the guard, and more), various presentations and readings at the conference, the banquet, and the closing night's boat cruise -- and its instantly infamous dance (which Charles Trumbull dubbed the Haiku Hop). I hope these pictures give a taste not only of the conference itself, but the ambiance of Ottawa and all the extraordinary conference attendees who helped to make this a sensational haiku conference. Gabriola Haiku Weekend, 24-26 July 2009

Every summer, the British Columbia haiku group, known as Pacifi-kana, holds a haiku retreat weekend at the home of Naomi Beth Wakan on Gabriola Island, a small island near Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. I travelled with Tanya and and Russ McDonald. We caught a ferry from Anacortes, Washington, to Sidney, B.C., visited the Emily Carr House in Victoria, and then Craigdarroch Castle before driving north to Nanaimo. We caught an evening ferry across to Gabriola Island where we enjoyed a weekend of haiku writing and reading. On the Sunday, Christopher Herold and I gave presentations on haiku, sponsored by Poetry Gabriola, at the Gabriola Commons. A great time was had by all, especially on the Saturday night when we witnessed one of the most spectacular lightning storms I've ever seen, which lasted three or four hours. My photos don't capture the lightning, but you can see the orange light that bathed the landscape. What a great weekend it was!

Seattle - Port Townsend Joint Haiku Meeting

On July 11, Seattle members of the Haiku Northwest group met with the Port Townsend haiku group at the home of Richard Lloyd on Marrowstone Island, near Port Townsend. More than thirty poets attended. We were asked to send poems on the theme of "hats," which Christopher Herold collected for a handout titled "Hatku," and we also had a kukai, much sharing of poems, time to write, and more.

SoulFood Poetry Party - 28 June 2009

To celebrate the third anniversary of the SoulFood Poetry Night, curated by Michael Dylan Welch and Lana Hechtman Ayers, we held a party at SoulFood Books and Cafe on Sunday, 28 June 2009. We invited all previous featured readers (about 75+ people) and our audience regulars for cake, readings, an open mic, and a special performance by Band of Poets. We had a great time and look forward to another three years of fine poetry readings. Thanks to SoulFood Books for making poetry night possible!

Seattle - Port Townsend Joint Haiku Meeting - 8 November 2008

On November 8, 2008, Seattle-area Haiku Northwest members visited Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, Washington, to meet with their haiku group. We convened at the Fort Worden Commons café at 10:30 a.m., then enjoyed two walks—at the beach and at the old military bunkers. One group stopped at Memory’s Vault, an art installation featuring poems by Sam Hamill, founder of Copper Canyon Press. After a tasty lunch at the Commons, we went to Doris Thurston’s home for an afternoon of haiku and snacks. We enjoyed a kukai (poem-selection party) of poems written on our morning walks. A highlight of the day was the Port Townsend group’s performance of poems by Seattle-area visitors, with piano, marimba, tabla, and other percussion instruments. They even had blown bottles and fingers rubbing wine glasses filled with water to various heights! Thanks to Christopher Herold for organizing, and Doris Thurston for opening her home. Afterwards, we went to Hudson Point Café in Port Townsend.

Haiku Northwest

Haiku Northwest, founded in 1988, meets monthly, usually at the Bellevue Regional Library in Bellevue, Washington. Most of these photos are from our May 2008 joint meeting with the Port Townsend haiku group (meeting at the Bellevue Botanical Garden and then the Bellevue Library). The last few photos are from our performance at the 2008 Folklife Festival in Seattle, where we performed music- and sound-related haiku.

Vancouver Haiku Stone - Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival

For three years, I have served as a judge for the Haiku Invitational, sponsored by the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was a dream from the beginning for the winning poems to be carved in stone. In 2008, that dream became a reality as a haiku stone, with winning haiku from the 2006, 2007, and 2008 Haiku Invitationals, was installed at VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver. These pictures, taken on 12 April 2008, show the haiku stone, with a few other pictures related to the festival and to the garden.

Poetry on Buses

Photos of my haiku that appeared in Seattle city buses in 2007 and 2008 as part of 4Culture's "Poetry on Buses" program. My poem was one just a few dozen selected out of many thousands of entries, so it was a real honour to be selected. On 7 November 2007, I also read the poem with other poets selected for the program at the Moore Theater in Seattle.
