oviedo
Since we decided to fly home from Madrid instead of pressing on towards Portugal, we booked a hotel in Oviedo, where we originally were only going to stop for the afternoon. We returned the car here and then hired a taxi to take us into the hills above the city, so we could look at two gorgeous churches. Our taxi driver, a woman, was very simpatica. As she left us off at the Cathedral of Oviedo we gave her, as a little present, the photocopy of a picture of the model of the Cathedral of Oviedo that resides in a park in their sister city, Jersey City! Oviedo is a beautiful city, very clean, very walkable, lovely architecture. I was able to attend a very exciting celebration for the local soccer team (Real Oviedo) in the town square--more than 3,000 people, balloons, bagpipers, accordionists AND I learned their song--Oviedo Adelante! Our last morning I walked around the Campo de San Francisco and took photos of various sculptures, including the one commemorating Woody Allen.
