Asia - Philippines, Manila, Fort Santiago
On a boiling hot day, my guts and head were not in great shape, yet I made my way out to the Fort Santiago "If these walls could talk" tour. Part history lesson, part theatre, this was hosted by a unique fellow who provided a fascinating and dramatic insight into how Manila became what she is today.
Incorporating character changes to best express the Spanish, American, Japanese and native Filipino influences on the city, our guide took us through emotional ups and downs, leaving me with the feeling that there is a great sense of loss of culture since the Americans arrived and World War II resulted in the destruction of nearly everything. His graphic telling of what the Japanese did to locals, in the very place we were standing, forcing America to bomb Manila to stop them, was heart-wrenching.
Unfortunately I was very unwell by the final stages of the tour, so missed the final chapters. It also means the photos are not of great standard, and much is missed. Apologies.
