We tiled the walls very conventionally but left a two tile wide band around the whole thing.
I bought a whole bunch of flowered plates at various thrift stores. I cut the flowers out using a wet saw, and glued them in.
Then I filled in the empty spaces with hunter green tile. I am pleased with the result and have some ideas on how to make future such minor jobs a little more exciting, while still being restrained.
