Friday Ride Around Town - Critical Mass Lansing August 2011

This month's ride we went south via the newer extension of the River Trail that goes south from the Red Cedar River near the Aurelius Rd. overpass thru Scott's Woods and Hawk Island Park to Jolly Rd. This is some of the most pristine beauty in our area!

Pics from a visit to see Bob Gibbs in Traverse City with Lenny Provencher. Bob fell and broke his right hip while riding his bike over to visit his daughter and was recovering. Lenny and I stayed in his cottage and also hung out at his grandparent's cottage nearby and enjoyed Arbutus Lk. and the surrounding countryside.

MSU Bike rack treasures

This is my new gallery of pics of cool bikes I find locked up around campus. Missed taking pics of one of the sweetest bikes I've seen; an early '90s Guerciotti full Campy. Crazy. At least he had his front wheel off and locked to the frame and rr wheel w/ a U-lock. Update (9/28/11): A week after posting these pics this bike was gone, after sitting there for over a month; hope it wasn't stolen.

Assenmachers shop visit

Some pics from a recent visit I made to Assenmacher's bike shop in Swartz Creek, MI. Bunch of treasures in this shop not the least of which is Matt, Michigan's most famous and prolific frame builder, who continues to build occasionally ("when there's an interesting project" he told me) as well as providing excellent repairs and repaints which is what brought me to his shop this day. I dropped off a couple frame sets for repairs/ repainting: a 1980 Assenmacher tandem and a mid-80's Nagasawa NJS frameset which a good friend of mine gave me as it had a fractured chain stay. Matt is going to replace the chain stay and repaint it as original (classic Nagasawa red with yellow accents) and then repaint our tandem in an off-white/ salmon color scheme (like a 60's Frejus track frame that was shown at our Americane' Vintage Track and Road Festival last weekend).

Ride of Silence - Greater Lansing 2011

We had 59 hearty souls come out and ride in the 5th annual Ride of Silence event for the Greater Lansing area (9 of these were area police bike patrol officers from 3 local agencies: MSU, City of Lansing, and Lansing Community College). This was a good turnout considering we had rain forecasted for days and we got it; rained from start to finish.

Toronto Nov. '10 Bike fun

Highlights of my bike fun in Toronto over our annual Thanksgiving Holiday pilgrimage to visit our good friends there. Katata-bike-station

Pics of a new bike parking station near the Katata train station in Shiga Prefecture. It's manned 24 hrs./7 and has capacity for about 1200 bikes. Amazing. Apparently there are similar bike parking facilities near all the major train stations in Shiga now or coming soon. Bike parking has been a big blight around train stations for many years.

Riding in the Mts near Wani

Some pics from one of my rides in the mountain roads near my in-laws up from Wanihama, Shigaken. It's about a 10 km route up to a tunnel with lots of very steep sections. These pics give you an idea of the route. Working on uploading some videos descending this route. The route goes thru a very old mt. village which I think you'll enjoy.

Kyoto Bike Share System

Some pics of one station of the Kyoto bike share/ "community cycle" system (Machikado Minaport is the Japanese name of the system) near the busiest part of Kyoto, just next to the Keihan Sanjo subway station near the Kamogawa (River). Also includes some pics of outdoor bike, motorcycle/scooter parking facilities. For a busy summer day I was surprised to see so many bikes in the station; I checked a few tires and every one I checked was very low on air, so I'm wondering if they're getting as much use as they had hoped.
