This is a vein of quartz which usually contains gold
One of the early drills called the widow maker because it caused white lung which was due to silicate dust. It's also where the term gold digger came from as women would marry the guy who operated the drill knowing he'd be dead in a few years.

This is an innovation on the previous drill made after they figured out what was killing the people on the previous drill. It was still pretty dangerous though.
This is a modern drill powered by a hydralic ram and often weighed enough that it took two men to carry it. The rock in the top of the picture is called black slate basically compressed sediment from the base of the ocean. There is aparantly only a few places in the world where you can see this.
A recreation of the old mine shafts supported by wood that would rot after a short while small narrow dark and dangerous.
