The split polygon tool was used to add edges. Note: It is easier to flip between these images in full screen mode.
White lines indicate where some of edge rings are formed.There are other rings that can be more easily seen after the vertices are averaged - next image.
What appeared to be very different topology can turn out to be similar once the vertices are averaged.
Just for fun I used maya's pen tool to write my name.
Then a polygon plane was added that covered the curves.
Then the split polygon tool was used to add three and five point poles to redirect the edge flow. There are images later in this gallery that show the detail closer up. Also, it is easier to see by using picasa's full screen option.

Then fill loops were added to the key loops.
The positions of the vertices were averaged by adding several polyAverageVertex nodes.
One of the edge loops was duplicated to show the likeness to the original signature.
