083009 - Cerro Noroeste, Mt. Pinos, Sawmill Mtn, Grouse Mtn, Brush Mtn, San Emigdio Mtn
Down in Irvine helping my sister move, I decided to do some HPS high pointing on my way back home. My original goal was to climb Mt. Baldy, but the fires raging in the San Gabriels discouraged that option. Instead I hit upon a few county high points and HPS peaks just off I-5 near Frazier Park... seemed as good an introduction to the HPS list as any. My first stop was Cerro Noroeste, a drive-up at the TH for Pinos/Sawmill/Grouse. After locating the register, I quickly headed off on the Mt. Pinos trail, reaching the summit a few hours later. Pinos is a prominence peak and a county highpoint and provided the best views of the day. On the way back to the car, I hiked over Sawmill Mtn. (another county highpoint) and Grouse Mtn. Then it was a short drive and a 1 mile walk to Brush Mtn, followed by another drive-up to San Emigdio. 6 peaks in about 6 hours... not bad, and a nice way to break up the long drive home.
