HydroBike Trip: Mississippi River - Lansing, IA, to Clinton, IA (June 2-7, 2010)

In 2005, Tom Moberg started riding a HydroBike down the Mississippi River from Bemidji (MN) on the "installment plan." By 2008, Tom had ridden about 350 miles. Mike Doyle joined the expedition in 2009, and he and Tom did a 125 mile ride from St. Cloud (MN) to Red Wing (MN) in June and a 6 day, 125 mile ride from Red Wing to Lansing (IA) in September. In June 2010, Tom continued with the journey by riding 145 miles from Lansing to Clinton, IA. The highlights of this trip included passing through 5 locks, having critters chew into the tent one night, racing a barge tow for 8 miles to a lock (and losing), camping on a lovely island, being driven off the river by a lightning storm, eating dinner with an interesting group of Vietnam vets and motorcycle riders in Dubuque, seeing pelican and cormorant rookeries, and the continuing ride through the beauty of the Mississippi bluff country. The Mississippi River journey has now covered 765 miles.

HydroBike Trip: Mississippi River - Red Wing, MN, to Lansing, IA (Sept. 8-13, 2009)

In 2005, Tom Moberg started riding a HydroBike down the Mississippi River from Bemidji (MN) on the "installment plan." By 2008, Tom had ridden as far as Sartell (MN), about 350 miles. Mike Doyle joined the Mississippi River expedition in 2009, and he and Tom did a 125 mile ride from St. Cloud (MN) to Red Wing (MN) in June and a 6 day, 125 mile ride from Red Wing to Lansing (IA) in September. These photos were taken by Tom and Mike on the Red Wing - Lansing trip. The highlights of this trip included passing through 6 locks, struggling 20 miles down Lake Pepin into a head wind, dodging barge tows, camping in nice parks, being escorted by eagles and pelicans, navigating along the barge channel in deep fog, and riding through the wonderful beauty of the Minnesota and Wisconsin bluff country. In 2010, the journey will continue.

2009 Fargo Flood - River Drive Photo Chronology

These photos were taken around our "front line" home on River Drive in south Fargo. Our experience was probably typical of the flood fighting activities that took place at hundreds of homes along the river during the record setting 2009 Red River flood. The primary flood protection dike of sandbags was built close to the back of our house and a contingency dike of modular units, sand, and clay was built on River Drive in front of our house. The daily progression of photos shows the activities, the weather, the neighborhood, the volunteers, and river views between Monday, March 23, and Monday, April 27. As the river rose, thousands of volunteers worked with great intensity and determination to get ready for the flood crest, which came on Saturday, March 28, at 40.8'. The weather warmed up, the snow melted, and the river receded. But more sandbagging was done to prepare for the predicted second crest, which reached 34' on April 15. Then the major flooding was over but cleanup continued

Arizona Trail Hike; Passages 18-19, 48 miles; March 13-17, 2009

These are photos from a backpacking trip over Passages 18-19 of the Arizona Trail between the Picketpost Trailhead near Superior and the Roosevelt Lake Visitor's Center. The hikers were Michael Carr, Mike Doyle, and Tom Moberg. We covered 48 miles, with over 9,000 feet of ascent and descent, in 4.5 days. Our campsites were near the Reavis Canyon trailhead, along Reavis Creek, at Walnut Spring, and by Cottonwood Spring.
