OFFERING CREDIT TO FELLOW COLLECTORS For sharing research information.

This album is being posted to explain why offering proper atribution to all sources for work being done or has been done in our chess collecting research world. It is becoming rather apparent that to some Internet researchers " minimal creditation " or even none is acceptable . I have a problem with this so now on the 9 th of July 2011 , new collectors just might appreciate why this is being highlighted. No party has ownership of any research project , and " to jump on to a self made Band waggon " by contacting persons in private, and then having noticed private information of great research benefit , to simply purchase this themselves , and offer it for public viewing , and thus claiming a " visual credit " for such a discovery . This practice is unwelcome and needs to be challenged, for the good of us all. Every image on my public site is offered to everyone, and all I ask for is a proper atribution " and link to / from the site it is used on ".

CAN WE BE SURE OF ANYTHING ?

When I first read that text from McCartneys Auctions, it was rather significant . As a member of Chess Collectors International, I have axcess to research by collectors going back to the mid 1980's. The founding members who did this work, might even claim it goes back even further . Yet even today we need more information to fill the blanks, so the claim by McCartneys is as valid now in 2011, as it was then in 1988. I accept evidence as proof if it is proven, but claims by any reputed experts regardless of their stature, is very contestable, and so it should be, if all they offer is their word . If we accept the " word evidence " from one party but not another, then we might as well accept it from every Tom Dick and Harry . Research work on chessmen is ongoing, and change is necessary as new evidence appears, the better the original research, the less likely such evidence found will be of major significance. However even the best work will always be improved upon .

These photos are a fun memory of chess auctions, and to some of us at least, the friendships made when meeting each other in person, is often worth a set or too. We could choose to stay at home, and bid on line, thus save cash for additional sets, but somehow this seems a great alternative way to collecting.

Photos of a set for sale , are they good enough ? Sellers Beware of " Dick Turpin offers "

For some 8years now I have seen poor photos of sets on E bay, and elsewhere, and it is frustrating. On occasion some photos of rarer sets are so poor that the seller will on occasion get poor auction breaking buy it now offers. The results will on most occasions favour the very experienced buyer, who knows exactly what the set is, and what it is worth for resale. Many collectors might dismiss a poorly listed set, because they feel a badly photographed item deserves no bids at all. The result of this common practice of photo neglect, is to create a bargain basement for a few risk takers, and deter the many who are reluctant to bid . Today auction houses offer poorly photographed sets weekly, but they sure " dont take Dick Turpin offers " as they know better . Many E bay sellers offload family treasures, and to see such collectables sell cheaper may be ok for all, but denying the true collector or fair minded dealer, a chance for a genuine honest bargain...STINKS !!!!

Plastic Sets

Probably the most difficult material to investigate properly , is Plastic. I have sourced persons with expertise and the results have been disappointing . In the collectables world this material is not understood by most people . The use of Generic terms like Bakelite seems to be the 21st century norm , when discussing any sets. Probably the best judges of what are rare sets of this material , will be collectors of Plastic chessmen . In 2011 CCI member Duncan Pohl produced the first ever book on Plastic sets , and it contains valuable documentary evidence, offering information on , makers, the materials used and the cost of the sets. It is pretty clear that my site had contained " ERRORS " based upon assumption due to todays availability and price for many collectable Plastic sets. All viewers might like to use "EXTREME " caution when referring to this site as " a form of Gospel " . I do not know anything like as much as I would like to know, about early or late Plastics.

iBUY IT NOW accepted offer . " oppose this horrible practice "

I have decided to make this album public because on occasion as a collector I have been denied the right to bid for a set. Apparently it may well be the case that any seller " can change the Auction description " and thus sell to any possible buyer, at any time . The buyer will by approaching the seller be taking a risk, because if he / she gets the set of chessmen on the cheap, the other bidders will be disappointed. The primary reasons why I do not take advantage of this practice are that it is hardly fair, and more importantly, other collectors will find out about it . How can I expect them to enjoy my company and friendship if I resort to such tactics ti improve my collection. Some time ago a knowledgable Jaques collector said to me that he would always pay a fair price for any set of Jaques chessmen. He stated to buy a set on the cheap, was dishonest and the sort of thing rogues would do. The action taken by this buyer was roguish, and not the conduct of a gentleman.

A wonderful suprise meeting as the Tea Clipper gathering of Chess Collectors was thinning out . Rajko arrived and showed us all a hisoric publication of that famous game between himself & Short v Crumiller & Kasparov . It was most fortunate that I had in my bag a " Britain's metal set ( with the less usual Horton's label ), and a tough Chad Valley Chess board . The lovely wooden Regence set I purchased at the Bonham's Auction simply was too unstable for this task . A selection of photos of collectors who attended the Auction are also included in this public album. We are a friendly bunch in the CCI .

Current research " thinking " amongst active Internet collectors who are CCI members.

At present there are a number of collectors who are by the depth of their research, challenging openly in Picasa claims on the dating, origin, and makers of some chessmen. This album is put together to state why and give credit where it is due to past CCI researchers . For the present this album will cover chessmen which have not been properly covered in any publications . July 5th 2011 a fresh addition . On more than one occasion by collectors who have great knowledge, I have been advised in private to research properly, and offer my findings to them. Evidence is a word used time and time again, but somtines we need to " test the Waters with the best we have " here in our Picasa sites I believe that is exactly what we are doing. If any collector has issues with any findings, speculations, then perhaps rather than comtesting it here on these sites, the Chess Collector Magazine of the CCI or a collector discussion group, might be better places to accomplish this .

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR COLLECTORS TO ENJOY VIEWING A COLLECTION ? I believe it is, if we want it so.

Recently I had some exchanges in private with fellow collectors. This public album is what I believe any Internet collecting site should be about, exploring a collectors pleasure . I raised " my personal concerns " concerning public comment of a negative nature . The idea of viewing chessmen being " crucified " and knowing that fellow collectors might love such sets, somehow seems off putting in encouraging others out there to join us . I HAVE A GOLDEN RULE ON PICASA .... NEVER IF POSSIBLE OFFER ANY NEGATIVE VIEWS ON A FELLOW PICASIAN'S SITE , IF ONE MUST DO THIS ONE WOULD BE BETTER ADVISED TO USE THE PRIVATE ROUTE . favourite chess sets.

This album is an attempt to try to offer viewers the mind set of collectors. Having seen other collectors do this it seemed a good time as my photography skills have improved a little. Every collector I have communicated has shown me off beat sets they love, the value might be peanuts,but make no mistake it is not relevant to such people. How does one value a 3 legged Dog ? Such a question is one many collectors might try to ask, but know our tastes all differ, so offering a true personal insight is always interesting. In this album no set is best, nor is value a norm, as almost all of my sets I enjoy owning, hence it is simply a collection of sets I own being shown as the more favoured. I might admit that the harder to find sets that are featured in this album do have some bias, but dont we all? As an exercise restoration work will be declared if only because, one day I hope some future owners will have the true history of these sets to enjoy, and know exactly what they own.

July 12th 2011. I have recently noticed that this album contains some of the earliest images I ever took, of my chess collection for public viewing . Some of the surviving photos are none too good for this second decade of the 21st Century...but I have decided to keep the few remaining ones . The limited selection of Chessmen in this album are Staunton sets of varied types and style. A separate album for Jaques , and another one titled my Chinese sets, are also available to view .

Jaques Staunton playing sets .

This album contains images of 4 Jaques sets. Since i started chess collecting i have been in contact with known CCI members who are Jaques enthusiasts. Identyfing these chessmen is not easy, and the original work on Jaques started by Michael Mark in the 1980's was rather important .A fellow CCI member, Frank Camaratta a few years later, carried on with a far more detailed study of Jaques chessmen. Then in 2002 for CCI members a report on these loved playing sets was published. The work being called " Reflections of the Staunton design by R .Stoller , this work contained a description of a system of identifing Jaques sets. It was called the Camaratta Codex, however lacking images it has been under recent scrutiny, and according to some authorities obselete. The current publication Jaques & British co Chess sets of 2010 has ceased to use the Codex, and replaced it with a dating system.

H whitty Ships set images.& other large pegged sets . & Blind chessmen

When one ever tries to play chess, one not only appreciates chess pieces , but also their stability on the chess board itself.. The bouncy waves would have made playing chess with any chessmen difficult . On land with bumpy roads it was suggested that " Cushons " were used in the 18th century with " Spiked Chess pieces " to allow gentlemen to play . These pieces had 6 inch spikes to allow the piece to go through the complete cushon and injure any player in the knee, if a poor loser chose to be nasty . Fortunately in the 19th century there were far more believable methods for allowing the persuit of playing chess at Sea. The use of Pegged men on a decent sized playing area, as voyages were time consuming, was developed . So clearly some makers of chessmen worked out the obvious, create a chess set with a board which allowed for comfort of play, as well as play itself . They appear to be rare , probably because of losses of shipping in both world wars.

English pattern chessmen.

For some time now some fellow CCI members and of course myself have been asking the question what is the difference between an Old English , and a St George set . Well there appears to be differences of opinion, and what ever we collectors might think , we can all agree these sets are English. So I have decided to drop the St George label ...its gone ... wiped off the map and thats it. Additional information will be added below the title " English " with terms like Calvert style and so on where appropriate . The St George idea was taken from the famous club in the early 1840's, but the English sets in this style go back further to the early 19th century . A DARNED GOOD QUESTION TO ASK IS JUST WHAT IS THE EARLIEST ADVERT FOR CHESSMEN CALLED ST GEORGE ?

Uprights, Dublins and other interesting sets ...

These sets have little information known about them is far from complete. In 2008 I paid a visit to the world famous Edinburgh chess club and saw chessmen that appeared to pre date by some years the claimed 1845 date of the Upright design. The design of these pieces and the Knight carvings do not represent what is contained in the Jaques Pattern / catalogue , and had very poor stability . Research done by a CCI member called Charles Oppenheim, offered concrete evidence that in 1840 Hallet of Holborn were selling this pattern. The article showed that the title was Edinburgh men. I personally believe that this pattern was created for the Edinburgh Chess club in the 1820's, and was copied by London makers . The Dublin pattern is also of unproven origin, thanks to Mick Deasey a date of 1867 has been descovered for the first known advertisment for this pattern, and it is also the year the Dublin Chess club was formed.

Regence

There is a valid case for claiming that the Regence is the most important playing set there is for collectors. The reason for this is the chess design pre dates the Jaques Staunton design , by a considerable time period . Just how old these sets are in one for the debating chamber , but the pattern is certainly 18th century in some form . In just about every Antique or collectable market of importance one cannot but view some form of Regence set . The French Empire had its influence world wide, so it is hardly suprising . The pieces lack the stability of the Staunton , hence they did not become the accepted F I D E design , for world chess competition.

TRAVEL ...MINIATURE ...& POCKET SETS.

Different descriptions for small sets are very necessary, if only because their manufacture was for purposes to aid the user . Size is something that is considered to be of extra prime importance when buying chessmen, yet nicely made small sets can be highly sought after . They will often cost suprisingly high sums of money , but as a collector I simply find myself enchanted by how such little pieces can be made, used , and be so visually appealing to a collector. My personal view is that some chessmen look far nicer in the smaller form, and as the size increases the artistry somehow goes off colour . This small selection is just a taste of what a collector will sample if such a person decides to investigate what is out there . PLEASE NOTE, IT IS COMMON TO SEE PASTED DESCRIPTIONS TAKEN FROM THE INTERNET WITH REGARD TO PLASTIC CHESS SETS AND BOARDS. metal sets all types.

For some odd reason cast metal sets are not desired by numbers of collectors. Perhaps its because there is the view that they are easy to get, and there are plenty of them, so why collect what others have . Well i have a few examples of such sets, and enjoy having them. Recently i met the original makers of two cast pewter sets in this small collection, and they explained to me how the sets were made. An original was created from an idea or a styled copy of an old set. This master was then moulded, and all the sets were cast . Sometimes we will only be able to offer a guess as to how many of a certain set are out there, and we will often determine what they might be worth, yet Antique dealers will often sell the chessmen at higher prices. Now i can appreciate a little more why they do this, as they measure with their experienced eye the work put into creating the set. We as collectors are possibly too quick to judge value based upon the availibility of these collectables.

chess Boards.

For some unknown reason collecting Chess boards is less common amongst collectors. Perhaps it is to my advantage as these very collectable items are not so sought after. Yet once you start collecting them, you can get hooked, as I certainly am. Sets can look so much nicer on the right board, and in some Antique shops one will often see a well chosen match to tempt a buyer. Many famous players often complained about piece stability, but perhaps the real truth is that many sets were played on boards with squares far too small for the pieces. Thus during chess games the difficulty of placing pieces on these squares was none too easy, and more often than not pieces got knocked over . In the 1890's the British chess company took the trouble to make specified boards for differing sized sets they produced.

Chess Books

We all have refrence books, some for a casual read, and others for a little bit more . My own personal belief is that it is perfectly acceptable to appreciate that errors will occur in all publications. In many cases this was because in the past the " Google search option was non existant " and high profile informed researchers today have an additional bonus of knowing collectors with similar interests at all levels. This was also nothing like as easy to source even in the 1980's when the CCI was in its infancy. Many of these books will be dismissed for poor information, or lack of detail, by modern standards,but even trying to understand why old beliefs were held for so long is a very good exercise for any research minded collector. One collector friend actually said to me he could not care less what was written , but enjoyed good images.. Yet so often such collectors will ask the researchers for opinions on chessmen , even when they have refrence books in their collections.

Chess Catalogues

For most of us lesser mortals these publications are rather nice to have. However the information offered is often misleading due to past researches, being simply transferred from one catalogue to the next one . Even the prices can be so different for similar sets from one sale to another . So in my own personal opinion it is best to take what is written with some caution , and in today's Internet world double check with informed collectors who actually have such sets in their collections, if you have the opportunity to do so. Research work on many types of set is being done on a regular basis, but the Auction house specialists are simply not keeping pace with these developements. There is an alternative view to mine , and it is by no means uncommon, what is written in Catalogues or even books, does not actually matter. In effect this could mean that " Fairy tales with nice pictures " are sufficent if the set is rather attractive.

The mystery of the Leuchars knight and canton Staunton sets.

At present there appears to be confusion as to just what is a Leuchars knight . Is it a Canton horse, or a copy of the number 10 knight which is a plainer version of the Cooke. We now know that the Leuchars knight does exist, but it is not the earliest Jaques carved horse. The confusion appears to be compounded by the published image in Jaques a collectors guide 2007. See page 10 figure 8 which looks like a knight with a non Jaques looking base, clearly classified as a Leuchars. This image whilst being removed from Jaques and British chess co chess sets in 2010, has now re surfaced. Jaques a collectors guide 2007, is now being sold as a Kindle E book from Amazon. No published image of the now " Re photographed number 10 set " is available bar the Internet sites of myself, and both the Web site, and Picasa one, of Professor Sir A Fersht . This album may help some collectors who are uncertain on this issue .

Two early Jaques sets no 10 & 75 compared.

On the 16th of April 2011 the number 75 set 3.5 inch king was sold at Semley Auction house for a stunning price . The cost to the buyer was approx £ 17000.00, this I believe is a record price for a Tournament size Jaques Ivory set . This album is offering Jaques collectors the opportunity to compare this set with the number 10. I offer my gratitude to a Karen Marshall of Semley Auctioneers , for her giving myself greatly improved images of the number 75 set . I have added additional images and views in an attempt to publicaly ask some questions . These questions started in the summer of 2007, continued in January of 2010, and the following september. Finally with the article in the CCI publication the chess collector, on the " oldest surviving Jaques set in the world "

CODEX CLASSIFACTION .

This now public album is available for all to view. To get the best possible bennefit from this research material I recommend that collectors study this, whilst viewing pictures of the knights from Jaques a collectors guide. This material was not a private arrangement between Stoller and Camaratta. UPDATE . January 2011 the earliest Jaques set with the label the no 10 was photographed from all angles. JAQUES KNIGHT COMPARISON & EXAMINATION OF THE NUMBER 10 IVORY SET SOLD TO THE BRITISH MUSEUM.

For some time now there have been refrences to the earliest known existing Jaques Ivory set, in Jaques research. The approx 9cm set with a Carton Pierre box labeled number 10 was sold to the British Museum in 2004. This album will allow collectors to view the the set, and compare it with an 1850 Morphy of similar size, and decide if the knight is a Leuchars or a Cooke ( type one ?! or two ?! ) and a Canton copy knight is also included here . It appears that the Canton copy knight must post date the number 10 set , and it differs in thickness and shape from both the 1849 number 10 knight, and the 1850 Morphy . Some collectors believe the Canton copy Jaques is as late as 1920's ?! Whilst others believe it is far earlier ?! Jaques researchers now have the opportunity to decide for themselves, if this number 10 Knight is indeed a Leuchars horse, or such beasts were copied from this one, at some later date ?!

JAQUES B.C.D. TRAVEL SET .

This album like more than a few " already existing ones here in our combined Picasa links " is all about offering as much pictorial evidence to support a " view , a theory , or a statement of fact " . If collectors of all statures can start to trust this evidence then the work done by us all counts for something, and its no bad thing either . Then even top auction houses may find this current and extensively researched information well worthy of their scrutiny. If it is not worthy, then we are no better than they are in attempting to solve the riddles of who made what sets, when such pieces were made, the origin of them, and even the material used in their manufacture . It is so easy to critisise auctioneers, dealers and writers of chess books too, but attempting improve or disprove published views in chess collector books or auction catalogues, and it is far from easy .

Sometmes we collectors just pick things up, and this is album is a light hearted view of bits and pieces i have aquired. Recently i was given three Chess T shirts at the 2010 chess collectors meeting at Cambridge, on top of another i received from my lady. So now i have 6 in the " it just sort of happened collection of T shirts " . The album cover photo of an unknown person holding a chess piece is a more serious collectable , but i wont be getting another as " wall space" is at a premium in our home. At the Cambridge meeting one could see a huge array of " chessables " Ties, Mugs, Jewellery, Caps Watches, Clothing, possibly even underwear nod wink . If a viewer thinks i am crazy, well there are far more fanatical fanatics out there i can tell you. Still i reckon its great ... better to be mad than boring !!!

Can Auction Houses do better with images of chess sets?

British chess co set. E. mail for condition report and the remaining pieces . This is typical of what is happenning today in 2010 and as each year passes even " Rank Amateurs " are doing so much better on the Internet. These people are customers of such Auction houses . Some people might say why state the blindly obvious as you risk making enemies of these Auction houses by stating the simple truth , well perhaps its about time it was done . Trying to scan through an Internet catalogue quickly is close to impossible, as we all know its our risk if we make buying errors .

Some time ago I purchased the HANDBOOK of CHESS ILLUSTRATED by G F PARDON. When I saw the handwritten signatures on differing pages it seemed that I might have a little book of historic significance. On the first page offering simply the name and publisher, there are two handwritten H A White names in what look to be different styles. Then on the following page showing the preface one signature of H A White .Then on the following page again 1V the preface continues, and then a note to the third edition stating " errors which crept into the first editions have now been corrected " Then there is a hand signature of G F Pardon or is there ?! Below this note a handritten note in larger writing stating that a H A White has corrected these . Trying to determine if Pardon wrote the note and White also signed the pages is the puzzle . H A White also signs page 7 and it is the 4th time he has hand written his name in this book . Wrong he signed page 96 so its 5 times !!!

Why collect at all ?

Sept 10th 2011. Having recently viewed the comments of fellow Picasians re nostalga , in the Chess Collector E bay group it spurred me to once and for all offer a variety of collectables that I have owned from the mid 1960's - very recent times . Trying to offer reliable information is not attempted here, as in many cases " others out there will know better " . I bought these collectables because " I liked the look of them " and still do too. A few were welcome gifts, but they are enjoyed even more because it adds to the memory . There are many more treasures of varied value still hidden in my Lyons Den.
