St. Petersburg: China Protest 1/1/2011
St. Petersburg, Russia, January 1, 2011: Russian AIDS activists started off the new year by staging a street performance to raise awareness about the Chinese government's misuse of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The group held signs that said: "China, pay your fair share on global AIDS!" They also painted their faces to represent the flags of the countries that give to the Global Fund. The protesters joined the growing chorus of activists - including AHF - that are asking China to "Give More and Take Less!"
Over the past ten years, China—now the world’s second largest economy—has received nearly $1 billion ($940M) from the Fund, yet has contributed just $16 million. Over the same years, the United States has contributed $5.1 billion to the Fund—more than 28 percent of all contributions to the Fund.
