Travelling in "Dong Country" - the border region of Guangxi and Guizhou provinces in China. Most of the people living in this region are of the Dong minority, some of the friendliest people in China.
This is the village of Zhaoxing. It is the biggest Dong village, and one of the most beatiful places in the whole of China.
Traditional wooden houses turn the village into a truly atmospheric place
Unfortunately, bad weather marred the quality of the picture - but one can still notice the beatiful location of Zhaoxing, right on the valley floor
Another Dong village. situated on the mountain and overlooking Zhaoxing
Rice paddies at the entrance to Zhaoxing
A Drum Tower. There are 5 Drum Towers in Zhaoxing - I believe it's one for each clan
Being the biggest Dong settlement, Zhaoxing is a centre for many Dong people "coming to town" for shopping and other arrangements
Getting ready for a fiesta
Celebrating the birth of a new baby
Walking arounnd Zhaoxing, one could see the local people still going in their old traditional ways. Such scenens were already absent from more touristy villages in China (Lijiang in Yunnan Province being a prominent example)
The Dong people still wear their traditional custom. After dying their clothes, they are left out in the sun to dry.
A villager going back to his home
There are many beatiful walks around Zhaoxing, this one is up into the mountains to the village of Jitan
Entrance to the village.
Every Dong village has at least one Drum Tower, with Jitang not being an exception

Back in Zhaoxing
The walk from Zhaoxing to the village uf Upper Diping was especially beautiful, and took the whole day
Getting closer to Upper Diping. There are rice fields at the entrance to the village
A look at Upper Dipping
And a look at the surrounding mountains
A small canyon
And a pretty lake nestled in the mountains
A mountain range on the way back to Zhaoxing. It was a truly breathtaking view
This is already in the Miao village of Basha
The women wear traditional Miao clothes
While the man, even the boys, cut their hair in this peculiar way
Just like most minority villages in Guizhou Province, Basha is also spread out on the mountain range
Beatiful wooden houses
Getting ready to a fiesta
A Miao person, with rice terraces in the background
This is already Zengchong, a beatiful and well-preserved Dong village
This is the oldest Drum Tower in China, more than 300 years old
The village is totally untouristy, making it a very authentic place
There were a few hundred-years-old stone houses among the many wooden ones
A truly beatiful place... Notice how the village is surrounded by the stream from 3 sides
This is the village of Xijiang - -the largest Miao vilage in China
A big place, but nevertheless a picturesque one
moving out of the mountains, one is leaving the friendly Miao and Dong people behind...
