Hiroshima Vacation Day 4 - Shukkeien + New Year's
Shukkeien is considered to be one of the best gardens in Japan, though it isn't listed as one of the top 3. I have to say, though, that if this is what it looks like off of the Top 3, I should definitely go and see the best. Anyway, Shukkeien means “shrunken scenery garden.” which reflects what the creator tried to do: stick many different kinds of scenery into the garden, such as mountains, lakes, valleys, forests, etc. The garden is usually closed until the 4th, but they had a special showing on the 1st, so I was able to go. The later pictures show the festivities at the Gokoku Shrine, near Hiroshima Castle. It's traditional in Japan to visit a shrine on the 1st in order to pray for good health and good fortune in the new year. One can also purchase protective charms, drink purified sake, and check their fortunes for the year. And, of course, there's also a festival atmosphere with all the food and game booths out there.
