Golden Gate H.S. Visit to Naples Lakes Country Club - Mentor Day
Students from Golden Gate High School, participants in the AVID program, shown
here with Naples Lakes residents—their mentors—during a visit on October 28.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is designed to encourage high
school students to attend college and to make informed career choices. It is run
by men and women—mentors—whose life experiences can serve as models for the
students, demonstrating that the age spread between mentor and student can be a
bridge rather than a chasm.
The experiences of the Naples Lakes mentors helped the students understand the
sort of obstacles they might have to overcome to be successful. The mentors did not
try to define success, but rather talked to the students about career choices, about
the importance of keeping their options open, and, most importantly, about getting up
when they fall down.
