From L to R, Chuck Schacher with his father Joe, mother Florence, and brother Jim on the Beach at Far Rockaway during the summer of 1941.
The Schacher family at “The Shore Club" on Seagirt Blvd, in Far Rockaway.
This early postcard shows the Ostend Hotel on the right. The hotel burned down to the ground on April 8, 1941. But, the other structures remained intact. The large bath house on the left became the Shore Club.

Aunt Rebecca (now 95 years old) and little Chuck.
We cannot identify these people in front of the Edgemere Club Hotel located in the vicinity of Beach 36th Street.
From a 1901 postcard of the Edgemere Club Hotel. This view of the west side of the hotel is identical to the one shown in the previous photo.
Chuck Schacher, Aunt Evelyn, Cousin Pat (deceased)
Is that Chuck in the kiddie car? Was this photo taken at Fairyland on Beach 32nd Street or in the Kiddie Park located on Beach 19th Street.
Central Avenue, Far Rockaway, facing south. See the trolley tracks. The ladies (Chuck's aunts) are standing about 30 yards from the Mott Avenue corner. The buildings in the immediate background are still standing, but the second story levels have been torn down. The most recognizable store in the background became Meyer's Clothing Shop in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In those days stores were desperately hot inside without air conditioning - another reason for those large awnings which were so popular at the time.
We believe that these ladies, friends of Chuck's mother Florence, are standing in front of the drugstore on the northeast corner of Central and Cornaga - the Jennings Building. There was a drugstore (soda fountain) at this location. The name of the firm was Lowe Brothers Pharmacy. After the Gotham Inn burned down in the late 1910s, the wooden-frame building was raised and a commercial building was constructed on this site and eventuall Lowe Drugs moved directly cattycorner into the northwest corner building. That is the Lowe Drug Store we remember today.

Another photo of Lowe Brothers.
If we had to guess, this photo of Chuck's Uncle Harry was probably taken in front of the Leek Building. If so, this store would later become Morton's Army and Navy Store after WWII.
