CTY Paddlers_ WDA_SPT_More than 100 teams of one- and two-paddler outrigger canoes and surf skis (canoes without an outrigger) started the 34-mile relay race from Wailua Beachg to Salt Ponds Beach on Kauai yesterday morning on a sea that was so flat it disappointed many contestants. But after passing Nawiliwili Harbor, the boats turned into a unseasonal and unexpected northwest wind wind that topped 20 mph and turned the race into an endurance contest. Billed as the largest and surf ski race in the world, the Second Annual Steinlager-Pahio Resorts Kauai World Challenge drew many of the top paddlers from Hawaii, California, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand and Rorotonga.
