2012 Travelogue #2

As a winter fundraiser, Grannies a Gogo is presenting four travelogues. On the 20th of January, Hugh and Anne Clarke presented African Safaris - the Big Five and Much More. Earlier today, January 27, Beverley Barling presented Expedition to Papua New Guinea. Next week, Sue Harnett will present a Bhutan Travelogue, and on Feb. 10 Tom Skinner will present a Newfoundland Travelogue. Sock-It-Away for Grannies II Count Day

Sock-it-Away for Grannies, again, was a great success thanks to all of the Grannies who added coins and bills to their socks during the past year. So far, we have raised $2086.88!! There are more socks to come. And, from craft sales, today, we raised $302! Thank you to everyone who added to the success of our 2nd Annual Sock-it-Away for Grannies. Enjoy the photos!!

Fall Craft Workshops

Ginny writes: "Three young physios from the hospital come every Monday to give gogos excercises etc. This week they had them running to retrieve pieces of South African flag and then assembling it. I thought the exercising of body and mind, as well as the need for teamwork, was great."

News about our Gogos in Sabie

Today, November 11, 2009, we received news and photos from Ginny, Grannies a Gogo's volunteer coordinator in Sabie, South Africe. Ginny writies: "The gogos have been trying their hands at making simple bead and wire jewelery on Thursday mornings." She goes on to say, "Quite a few of the Sitabogogo are attending outdoor adult literacy classes. We were running the classes in the Ubuntu Centre (no longer available), but here they enjoy sitting in the garden to work. Even Sarah is learning to write AND to use a calculator!!" The knitting group meet in the church. The last photo captures a group of 24 unemployed women who took a workshop on making household candles. The objective is to use these skills in the creation of a new small business.

The Gogos' Christmas 2009 Outing to Mac Mac Pools and Falls

On December 10, 60 Sitabogogo Gogos and Mkuhulus (Zulu for Grandfathers) went to Mac Mac Pools and Falls for a braai (BBQ). Ginny reports, “They had a wonderful time, although a thunderstorm cut things shorter than planned. When they got back, they were each presented with their food hamper in a smart shopping bag. They headed home very happy.” The outing and the food hampers are Grannies a Gogo's Christmas gifts to the Gogos and Mkuhulus of Sitabogogo.

Our guests, the Cheetahs, the Giraffes, the Elephants and the Lions, visited four African locations, the Savanna, the Wallow, the Veld and the Watering Hole, for a four-course South African culinary experience.

Using photos of very special Christmas hangings created by Beauty Manzini, one of our Sitabogogo grannies, we have printed Christmas cards to sell as a fundraiser. Sitabogogo Activities

Ginny reports on SITABOGOGO (Care for the Grannies): Sitabogogo have been very busy working on various handicrafts to be sold to benefit the Ubuntu Centre. A popular group project is the patchwork quilt; approximately thirty gogos are involved. The sewing group also made tapestry name tags for all the members. The beadwork group have been given an order for sixty necklaces. The gardening group are now supplying the kitchen, taking some vegetables home for their families and selling some to pay for the fertilisers and plants. Grannies A Gogo have financed a water tank for the garden and pay for the services of Gug, a professional gardener who has been teaching the gogos how to make compost, plant correctly, etc. Some of the gogos have taken over kitchen duties and produce a light lunch daily for about 30 -40 people, and, once a week, a full cooked meal. African Workshops

Thanks to the generosity of five accomplished artists, our spring fundraiser, a day of African Workshops, surpassed all of our expectations. Annette Pollok led a group in making African coil pots. Bob Kingsmill inspired the making of some amazing masks. Robin Richie introduced an enthusiastic group to African drumming. Using humor, skill and unbounded energy, Susan Fenner drew gumboot dance moves out of people who did not know they could dance. Heather Kerr showed her group some of the intricacies of beading. A Meeting of the Letter Writers

Joan D., our Letter Writing Chair, invited the grannies who correspond with our South African gogos to an evening of sharing letters, reviewing guidelines and asking questions, as well as wonderful refreshments. Our Gogos Go Swimming

Ginny writes: "At last, we managed to go on the swimming trip, and what a wonderful time we had. The gogos just loved it! Only three of them had ever been in a pool before, so it was really a new experience which they are keen to repeat. We started with a hilarious fashion show at the centre as they sorted out the swimming costumes and modeled them. Then we were off. The pool was so right, not too deep, and the same depth all over, perfect. Some gogos surprised us, especially Mandau who took off like a fish, and during the time we were there, must have completed at least six lengths! A great time was had by all." December 30th Gathering of Grannies à Gogo

A day after our informal get-together, Shirley G. wrote: "I want to say how delighted I am with our gathering last night. Thank you Rhondda for inviting us into your lovely home, Susan for inspiring us with stories and helpful information and Joan for coordinating our letter-writing partnerships. At one point in the evening Shirley B. remarked, "Look at the glowing faces!" and as I looked around I could see what she meant. The women gathered on Dec. 30 were involved at a really deep level - listening and responding to the good news that at last, after years of watching world news and feeling helpless, each one of us can say, "We're making a difference and it feels good!" So I'm thinking that while Grannies à Gogo is making a difference in the lives of women in Africa, it's also making a difference in the lives of women right here at home. Sitabogogo Gardening Projects

Here are exerpts from a recent note from Ginny about the success of our gogos' gardening projects: "... the garden is progressing." Included with the pictures in the album is one showing the "incredible crop of broccoli." Ginny writes: "Gug is teaching them how to wrap the celery to keep it growing straight and pale green. Today we are going to pick cauliflowers and green peppers. So far, we have sold almost R900 worth of vegetables and have frozen lots" for future use by the gogos. Ginny writes: "We are at last getting off the ground properly with the gardening group now. I have arranged for Gug, to teach the gogos about compost making and crop rotation. He has given me a very comprehensive business plan, for want of a better word, where he envisions the gogos eventually selling their surplus produce, in Sabie and surrounds."

Granny's Treasure Trunk Sale

With 18 "trunks," coffee with a mug, African drummers and sunshine, we had a very successful fund-raiser for our gogos in Sabie, South Africa. All of the proceeds will go directly to assist our grannies who are raising their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren.

Sitabogogo English Paper Piecing Workshop

Cherryl Taylor sent us these photos of the gogos learning how to do English paper piecing work. She says: "Thought you would enjoy pictures of the Gogo's that I took today. They are really enjoying the English paper piecing. It is something they have really taken to, and they like being able to sit and visit while they work." With the second group of pictures, Cherryl writes: "Thought you would like to see some finished products of our latest project. They are all so proud of their cushions and love doing this. Joy and I can't cut out hexagons quickly enough! Some of them really have a wonderful sense of color and a few of them have done some extra embroidery work on their projects. As you can see, a few ladies are busy crocheting and knitting. These ladies are such a joy, I will miss going every week."

Sitabogogo Play Soccer and Net Ball on International Youth Day

As a fund raiser, our Sitabogogo formed teams, sewed "short" skirts, donned T-shirts and played soccer and net ball. The youth, band and all, marched the gogos to the field and then cheered them on.

Sitabogogo Visit the Airport

Ginny writes: I think I am just about recovered from taking 66 gogos out for the day on Wednesday. What a great time they had. We visited the airport where they were treated royally and shown everything. Then they were allowed to go and sit on the grass quite close to the planes. The airport was busy and they were all fascinated. One old lady said to me, " I am eighty five years old, and never, never in my whole life have I seen such a thing as this." It makes one feel so humble. We had a picnic lunch courtesy of St Georges Church, Whiteriver, and then hit the Mall, window shopping mainly, although some did take advantage of Games kind offer of a 10% discount on their purchases. Game also treated them to cold drinks and fancy biscuits which finished the day off on a high.

Gogos' Letter Writing Blitz

Ginny sent us pictures of our Gogos getting letter-writing help from some home based care giver volunteers. Some of our Gogos do not speak English, and some have not learned to read and write. This letter-writing help means that we will have new opportunities to pair up with our South African grandmothers!

With the showing of the film, The Great Granny Revolution, Grannies A Gogo: the Vernon - South Africa Connection was launched. Over 200 people viewed the film.
