Ten Boys Initiative 2011

The 10 Boys Initiative, a BPS approach to close the achievement gap, aims to increase the number of African American and Latino males reaching proficiency by identifying 10 boys in the “Needs Improvement” and “Warning” categories and working with them and their families to improve their skills, attitudes, and achievement. All 10 Boys Initiative groups from different BPS schools have been gathering at the University of Massachusetts Boston since 2009 to celebrate their achievements, listen and interact with successful African American and Latino role models, and have a small taste of the college experience. The 10 Boys Initiative is managed by Dr. Carroll Blake, Executive Director for the Achievement Gap.

Marshall School MCAS Student Rally Dream It! Believe It! Achieve It!

3rd through 5th grade students at the John Marshall School were inspired by their first annual MCAS Rally. To help increase the motivation for success magician Bonaparte was on hand to entertain and excite the students. In addition, children in kindergarten through 2nd grade made banners of encouragement with the students' names. 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers helped students create t-shirts to remind them of important MCAS tips.

Parent University Launch

More than 250 BPS parents attended the first session of Parent University at Umass Boston today. Parent University is a program designed to help parents increase their understanding of how children learn and develop, what their children should be learning, how to help their children get what they need to succeed, and how to bring other parents together to work for school improvement.

BPS 2nd Annual Back-to-School Jamboree: General album

Thousands of children and families gathered on City Hall Plaza to celebrate the beginning of a new school year at the 2nd Annual Boston Public Schools Back-to-School Jamboree. Superintendent Carol R. Johnson, Boston School Committee Chairperson Rev. Gregory G. Groover, Sr. and members of the Boston School Committee were on hand to welcome students and families back-to-school.

BPS 2nd Annual Back-to-School Jamboree: Sponsors, Vendors, Activities

The Back-to-School Jamboree featured live performances as well as activities, prizes and giveaways, including school supplies from Office Depot and books donated by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Families were also able to take advantage of health screenings and other community resources to help students get the school year of to a good start. Representatives from various BPS departments were available to answer questions about student assignments, afterschool programs, tutoring services, school meals and other important back-to-school topics.

Parent University: Parent College at the Constitution Beach

Many families from East Boston attended a class from the FSE Parent University on June 17th. They had some fun in the sun and learned about discipline strategies, personal and community safety, healthy life styles and nutritional tips. They also participated in the Every-Day-Math workshop offered by the OFSE and in a yoga session on the beach led by an instructor from the YMCA.

Superintendent Johnson Visits the Sony Walker Center/FSE ESL Class

Over 70 BPS families and students gathered to meet with Supt. Carol Johnson. She visited the BPS parents who are attending the ESL class in the TSN/Sonny Walker Computer Center. The ESL classes are run by the OFSE. The parents invited Dr. Johnson to see 1st hand how vital the ESL program is for the parents whose 1st language is not English, especially in empowering them to be actively engaged in their schools. All the family members gathered to show her where they have classes, how much English they have learned and ask questions about their children’s education. The festive meeting took place in the upper cafeteria of BLA, where the parents had an opportunity to hear the Supt.’s plans for ELLs in BPS, the current budgetary situation, and some tips to support their children during the ongoing MCAS season. The parents expressed their gratitude and honor to host her and shared some of their concerns regarding the funding for the ESL program and their children’s academics.

Boston R.O.C.K. It Launch into Summer

Mayor Thomas M. Menino hosted Boston youth during the kick off their February school vacation week at “Boston R.O.C.K. IT!!! Launch into Summer” at Dorchester’s Strand Theatre today. Organized by Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) working with principal sponsor, the Foundation To Be Named Later, the event gave young people ages 10-14 a fun school vacation week event. During the occasion, BCYF employees gathered information and e-mail addresses from the attendees so the City can communicate with them about summer opportunities and distribute summer information via “goody bags”, which the young people received on their way out so their parents or guardians can start enrolling them in summer programming. The R.O.C.K. IT!!! featured remarks from Mayor Menino and BCYF Executive Director Daphne Griffin, celebrity MC Cole Wright from NESN, a special screening of the Celtics Championship DVD, the Celtics Championship Trophy, raffles, inspiring youth performances and more.

Spotlighting our Heritage: Celebrate Cape Verde with Burke Families and Students

Burke families & students came together at Restaurant Cesaria to celebrate Cape Verdean heritage in the 1st of the "Spotlighting our Heritage" series, in which different cultures of the student and parent body will be honored through monthly celebrations. Spearheaded by Burke FCOC, Ayesha Rodriguez, a team made up of staff members, Auta Almeida, Adilson Cardoso, Nezi Brito, and Community Outreach Coordinator, Alberto Pina, worked to ensure that students and families enjoyed an evening of delicious food, good music, and fellowship. Students gave excellent performances of dance, essays, poetry and musical compositions. A number of students and parents were recognized for their contributions to academic prosperity. Also Consul General of the Cape Verde, Ms. Mascarenhas, graced the event with powerful words of wisdom and encouragement. A special thanks to Sam Depina and Burke staff members - Ms. Williams, Ms. Watts, and Ms. Depina - for taking the time to support this celebration.

Young Achievers Community Coalition (YACC) Informational Kick-off Breakfast

As a result of the upcoming merger between Young Achievers and the former Lewenberg Middle School, part of Superintendent Johnson’s Pathways to Excellence plan, Young Achievers decided to form a community coalition (YACC) and develop an active partnership with families, community members and institutions to support the schools’ mission. The YACC hopes to collaboratively create a resource team of school leadership, partners, mental health and wellness providers, higher education institutions, and community and faith-based organizations. The YACC seeks to efficiently and effectively coordinate school and community resources to provide integrated services that Young Achievers students need to be successful.

Back to School Jamboree I

The Boston Public Schools (BPS) hosted the first-ever Back-to-School Jamboree on Saturday, August 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on City Hall Plaza. The event featured live performances, free ice cream, health screenings, community resources, prizes and more. The first 1,500 students who attended took home a free backpack full of school supplies. Organized by the BPS Office of Family and Student Engagement, the Jamboree was produced by First Night Boston. Sponsors for the event included the City of Boston, Sovereign Bank, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Boston, Neighborhood Health Plan, Verizon, Apple, and Touch 106. Feed the Children donated the backpacks.

Trotter E. School 100 Word Challenge Awards Ceremony

Tuesday June 5th, 2007 – First grade students and families from Ms. Wright’s class at the Trotter Elementary School were awarded with medals and lapel pins for successfully completing the 100 Word Challenge program run by Alice Levine, OFCE’s Family Education Project Director, and Maria Gonzalez, program consultant. In roughly 6 weeks the families, students, Ms. Wright and other Trotter staff worked together to implement this successful initiative from the Office of Family and Community Engagement that now enables every first grader in that class to children confidently say: “I can read 100 words.”

Celebrating Excellence at Edward Middle School

Charlestown 1/27/07- 'Students from the Edward Middle School shared portfolios of their learning from the first half of the school year with parents and visitors from different agencies and communities of Boston during the first two class periods today. Each visitor were given a list of questions and asked to interview a number of students. Celebrating Excellence is also great opportunity for students to work on their communication skills, and for visitors to look behind the doors of a Boston middle school. The presence of dozens of these visitors showed students and teachers that the public cares about their learning, and that their work is valued.' Everett School's Winter Fest 2006

Congratulations to Sarah Heffernan (Parent Council co-chair), Nicole Mack (headmaster) and all the rest of staff and parents! In less than one month they put together a wonderful and fun event for parents and kids. And this is the first time they organized it. Although the freezing cold we had last Friday, the turn-over was unbelievable. The school hallways and library was filled up with happy parents and their kids from including many bilingual families. And needless to say, the food especially the thin crust pizza was just delicious!
