20120108 - Superstition Wilderness, AZ - Coffee Flat Trail from Woodbury TH

Weather was nice enough for a quick 9.5 hike out on this section of trail I had not done before. I am attempting to hike every mile of (official) trail in the Superstitions, so this was a good one to get in. The trail weaved along the wash at the bottom of the canyon and overall was quite pleasant.

20111231 - Superstition Wilderness, AZ - Ridgeline Hike

Did the ridgeline hike with a group from meetup.com. It was an extremely difficult hike of about 10 miles and 4-5k elevation gain. The group seemed to be very focused on making 'good' time, so I was having to rush to try and not slow them down any more. I didn't get very many pictures, or a good feel for the hike, other than it was very hard.

20111217 - Superstition Wilderness, AZ - Bluff Springs, Dutchman, Red Tanks, Whiskey Springs, Dutchm

It had been awhile since I did this exact loop. The 14 miles is beautiful, with some amazing camp spots along the way. Weather was pleasant, although a little chilly and overcast at times. I got started later than I wanted, but got in just before sunset, about 7 hours total trip time.

20111210 - Superstition Wilderness, AZ - Loop hike of 2nd water, boulder, dutchman trails

After a bit of a lag between hikes, I got out and about 10.5 miles. Weather was just slightly chilly when I started, but warmed up after a bit. Completed the hike in about 5 hours.

20111002 - Seven Springs Recreation Area, AZ - Cave Creek #4 Trail

It was fairly warm, but hiking along the creek helped a good bit. Overcast skies for part of the trip also helped. It was about 5 miles round trip.

20110918 - Grand Canyon National Park, AZ - Grandview trail

I went up Saturday night and camped in Mather campground. I got an early start for this supposedly 14 mile trip down grandview trail and then tonto east trail around the base of horseshoe mesa. I need to check the mileage, because the map I had seemed to be less than the mileage reported at the trailhead. It was quite hot coming out and there was no water. Took me about 9.5 hours to complete, not my best performance if it really was only 14 miles.

20110813 - Joseph D Grant County Park, CA - 2 Days of Camping and Hiking

I spent the weekend camping and hiking at the park. This is my favorite park in the Bay Area, as it is just over the hill (45 minutes from work), yet feels far away from everything. I finally did the loop trail that goes through Deer Valley near Antler Point. The valley was quite lovely and just adds to my love of the park. The campgrounds were nice, and I was one of 3 groups there for Sunday night.

20110806 - Yosemite National Park, CA - Hike to Half Dome

Perfect weather for this semi hike to Half Dome. It was about 15 miles total. Max and I were not able to go all the way up, as you now need a permit for that. We took the John Muir trail bypass around the Mist Trail on the way back down, which had great views.

The Air and Space Museum by Dulles airport was awesome. I loved seeing all of the Space stuff. Seeing the space shuttle was one of the best things I've ever been able to see in my life.

Various places around Washington DC. Monuments and Museums. Weather was insanely hot, heat index of about 115 degrees. I stayed at a Best Western in Springfield, VA and took the Metro in/out.

20110718 - Great Smoky Mountain National Park, NC - Kephart Prong Trail

Drove up early to try and hike the Mount Le Conte trail, but it was raining rather heavily there once I arrived. So I went back down and did this about 9 mile round trip hike up to the Dry Sluice Gap Trail. Everything was really wet on the trail and no sunshine.

Got up early to do this 7.2 mile round trip hike. The weather was quite warm, when you factor in the humidity. It felt kind of like hiking in a sauna. Its very green out here, though.

20110530 - Mcdowell Sonoran Preserve, AZ - Loop from Gateway around Tom's Thumb

This was about 13 miles with a few sections of good elevation gain. I surprised myself by completing in only about 5 hours. The trails were extremely well maintained and marked. They were also quite busy, being basically in Scottsdale. Some portions felt somewhat remote, but I could see the city for the entire trip. The loop I did used these trails: Gateway, Bell Pass, East End, Tom Thumb, Gateway Loop

Had a large group of over 20 for this hike to the top of Brown's peak. The final climb up the scree filled shoot was dangerous, but not really crazy.

20110516 - Grand Canyon NP, AZ - Rim to Rim Hike

My standard North Rim to South Rim hike. I was very worried about the wind and cold, but it turned out to be perfect weather. Only about 80-85 coming out. Also did entire hike in just under 11 hours. I stopped for sit down breaks only 2 times, 15 minutes at Phantom Ranch, and 15 minutes at Indian Gardens.

20110507 - Santa Catalina Mountains, AZ - Finger Rock Trail to Mt Kimball

My first hike with Meetup group Take a Hike. It was a long 10 miles with 4000' of elevation gain over about 4 of it. A good training hike for the Grand Canyon. Two people got lost at the top and took awhile to come back down, but they eventually made it.

20110417 - Superstition Wilderness, AZ - Two Bar Ridge Trail

A surprisingly difficult 15-16 mile out and back hike. I had to go up and over several ridge lines, which made the total elevation gain over 4000'. I ran out of water as well during the last about 4 miles.

20110327 - Seven Springs Recreation Area, AZ - Cave Creek Trail Loop

This was about a 14 mile loop using trails 4, 247, 248, 250, 246, 247, 4. I got back about 7pm, which was 15 minutes after sunset. This area reminds me a bit of California, as it has a lot of rolling hills. Very different from the normal Superstition area hikes I do.

I started out at Lost Goldmine trail head and hiked up to a bit past West Boulder Canyon Saddle. It was around 6 or so miles, as I went off trail after taking a bad route to a mine. I also slipped with my hand coming down on a couple of jumping cholla spine balls on my way back.

I've done this hike once before. Its about a 15 mile, mostly level loop hike. Cavalry Trail (through Marsh Valley) I managed to find this time instead of just wandering along the wash. That valley is really pretty.

I got up very early to do a hike on the other side of the Superstition Wilderness (Two-Bar Trail). Unfortunately, I was just feeling too tired to make the drive and all day hike so I did this one instead. I was the first at the trailhead, just before sunrise.

I did a repeat of a loop I did with Dan last year. Map says about 12 miles, but the GPS and time says more like 14-15 miles. It was really windy so I am glad that I did this shorter loop instead of the 19+ mile one I was thinking about.

20101107 - Grand Canyon National Park, AZ - Hike to Plateau Point

I stayed in Miswak lodge the night before and got started about 9am on the trail. Going down was very enjoyable. It felt great to be at the Canyon again. Plateau point was a great place to finally be able to see. Coming back up I managed to go the entire 6+ miles to the rim without stopping or feeling too tired.

20101031 - Superstition Wilderness, AZ - 19 Mile Loop from Peralta

Dutchman, Whiskey Springs, Red Tanks, Coffee Flat, Dutchman. Long 19 mile loop. Red Tanks trail was very hard to follow and quite overgrown. It took me 11 hours, I got back about an hour after sunset.

20100928 - Kendrick Mountain Wilderness, AZ - Pumpkin and Bull Basin Trail Loop

One of the last warm days this year had perfect weather, high around 82. This was about a 11-12 mile loop hike to Kendrick peak. Most of the area was burned in 2000, so it was a bit ugly in parts.

A day at the History Museum in Missoula, MT. I then when to Garnet Ghost town which is some miles east of Missoula. An amazing place to go, I could go into the buildings and see furniture and artifacts just loose on the tables.

20100627 - Mojave National Preserve, CA - Piute Gorge Trail, Fort, Traveling around

Stopped over at this preserve on my way to San Jose. The hike through the canyon had a portion of intense bush wacking. Ran out of water again like an idiot too. About 5 miles round trip. Around 100 degrees.

20100620 - Superstition Wilderness, AZ - Hoolie Bacon and Peter's Trail Loop

About a 14 or so mile hike. It was over 100 at the end of the day. The cut over from Hoolie Bacon to Peter's trail was very hard, as I had to push through a lot of cat claws. I ran out of water with about 4 miles left, but got back in 1.5 hours to no really bad effect, luckily.

20100404 - Tonto Basin, AZ - Park Trail 66

This trail was 10 miles round trip with about 2600 ft elevation gain during the first 2.5 miles. Very overgrown towards the last mile or 2 and a burned area so not too pretty.
