this monk sits at the very top courtyard of Angkor Wat
These monks are at the Temple Bayon in Angkor Wat. Notice the stone faces carved into the towers - one on each of four sides of 52 towers in all - an incredible spectacle. The face is of the god-king Javayaraman, the monarch who went on a building frenzy to make Angkor the massive complex that it is.
This monk sits on the Elephant Terrace at the heart of the Angkor Thom complex. The tower-like structures in the background (eight in all, four pairs of two) were constructed around 900ad. They were thought to have been for people who had a strong disagreement - each would be assigned to a tower and would have to stay there until they shifted their attitudes and could work out a settlement. Great idea!
