Alleyways and Kaleidoscope Park

The City of Morganton Main Street Department received two awards from the North Carolina Main Street program for excellence in downtown revitalization efforts. One award was for work on downtown alleyways and the Kaleidoscope Park on N. Sterling Street.

Dierdorf Portraits - Art in the Hall

The City of Morganton invites you to visit the latest Art in the Hall display located in Morganton City Hall. Now on display through February are graphite portraits of iconic figures of the past and present. From Rosa Parks and Dolly Parton to Rob Zombie, Edgar Allen Poe and Jesse James, there are 31 portraits on two floors that will test your recognition skill while you appreciate the talent of artist Lori Dierdorf.

Blue Ridge Parkway Community Quilt

On display in Burke County at Morganton City Hall is a traveling exhibit of the Blue Ridge Parkway Community Quilt Commemorating the Parkway’s 75th Anniversary. Upon the 75th anniversary in 2010 the Blue Ridge Parkway invited each county, through which the parkway traverses, to participate in the making of a commemorative quilt. Burke County’s block was created by local fiber artist Nolita Wacaster. The quilt is scheduled to remain on display in City Hall through January 13, 2012.

American Roller Bearing expansion announcement

American Roller Bearing will exapnd its operations in Burke and Alexander counties, and expects to create 231 jobs in the area during the next five years.

Fiber for the Holidays - Art in the Hall

Fibers for the Holidays is on display in Art in the Hall through December 2011 in the lobby of the Morganton City Hall located a 305 E. Union Street Suite A100. Fibers for the Holidays showcases unique textile pieces including quilts, weavings, mixed-media and fiber collage.

Halloween Spooktacular 2011!

Ghost and goblins, mummies and monsters, princesses and pirates and almost every other fairy tale character and superhero headed to downtown Morganton Monday Oct. 31, 2011, for the annual Halloween Spooktacular. Downtown merchants handed A LOT of candy and everyone enjoyed hayrides, bounces thanks to Journey Church and plenty of free games compliments of the City of Morganton Recreation Department! The event ran from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Brown Mountain Overlook Dedication

City, county, state and federal officials gathered at the Brown Mountain Overlook on NC 181 in Burke County Thursday morning to unveil a new information kiosk that provides details about the recently cleared view towards Jonas Ridge.

Quilts and Coke Machines

Burke Quilters Guild quilts and several antique Coke machines from the Nostalgia Renovations & Antiquities Vending Company are on display in City Hall. The quilts will be raffled to help raise funds for the guild’s education fund, and at least one Coke machine will be full of cold, bottle drinks!

Plow Day 2011

Blue skies and sunshine greeted visitors at the Valley Hills Antique Plow Day and Swap Meet held Saturday May 21 at Catawba Meadows Park in Morganton, NC. Vendors sold and swapped various farm tools. Antique tractors were on display. And everyone enjoyed the pony and carriage rides.

Morganton Greenway System

The Morganton Greenway System includes the Catawba River Greenway and the Freedom Trail Greenway and currently has five pedestrian access points with parking. In 2009. the Greenway System was included as part of the North Carolina Birding Trail. Information about the trail and the types of birds on the trail was published in the NC Birding Trail Mountain Region Guide.
