I was going to let my son fly us to SnF. Unfortunately I experienced a low oil pressure at engine idle the night before. We ended driving (2.5 hrs). We did not take too many pictures and did not stay for too long. The low oil pressure problem turned out to be caused by a broken gasket that was not supposed to be there. It took more than 1,000 hrs to found this extra part put in by the engine assembler.

This morning we decided to fly to Greenbrier to have lunch. We talked about this for a few years and have never done it. With 10nm visibility, ceiling from 3,000' to 8,000' and light wind along our entire route it is was pleasant trip. Only thing not optimal is the surface temperature dropped to low 30s over the past two days from 70s. One just feel cold! At 3,000' the outside temperature is around 26 degrees. We have plenty of cabin heat to keep us warm for the entire trip. Only after we came back and listen to NPR and heard a special segment on the news about Greenbrier bunker. What a coincidence!

May 15 is a busy flying day. It seems everyone is hosting a fly-in. We decided to fly to Fairfield County KHLQ for breakfast and to see two RV10s. After breakfast we will go to Lunken (Cincinnati) for the 25th annual Flying Knight's air rally (our third time). Just a week prior I reinstalled cylinders to my engine. By now I have 1.8 hrs on my cylinders. I am still in the break in period. During this period it is important that I run the engine at 65%-76% power and keep the cylinder head temperature (CHT) low. I also need to minimize the low rpm run at minimum. I ended not flying at maximum speed and not slowing down too much when approach to land. At take off I also use partial power only and at a flatter climb (to have more air flow into cowling). It takes some getting use to. I did not fly for three months. However, as soon as I get back into the cockpit everything is back. I know my airplane too well not to loss too much of my skill! Overall, a great day to fly.

5-6-2010 Cylinder installation

After three months I got four new cylinders and pistons back. It took me two days to put my engine back. Initial test run (run-in) was successful. Since we are going aways for the weekend I will do the test flight and break-in next week. I was doing the work myself and my hands were covered with oil. It was hard to take pictures. There is few pictures taken and only during a break and after I have washed my hands (no water in the hangar).

2-12-2010 Pull cylinders

All my cylinders fall under ECI AD Group A. The AD requires 50 hr visual inspection and compression test. A week ago ECI issued a mandatory cylinder rework SB. Experimental engine owners are supposed to send both Groups A&B cylinder and piston to them for rework. My engine has 660 hrs engine time. The wall looks great but combustion chamber has a lot of carbon deposit (no safety issue). The AD issue is on the manufacturing process on cylinder head thread that joins cylinder head and the cylinder barrel.
