I sketched out my composition in oils, thinned down with OMS
Starting to establish my values, I lay in some of the lightest areas and some of the darkest
Blocking in the distant buildings, I also start working on the building to the left.
All buildings now have their local colors.
I've built up some texture and have begun to add some greenery. At this point I step back and assess, and find my front facing building is a tad too narrow.
Adjustment made!
I build up more texture and start to define the windows and doors
Finally, the center of interest comes into focus.
More work is done to the lunchtime crowd.
I step back and assess again, and decide to add to the foreground another one of the stone vases of flowers that lined the perimeter of this square .
Then I put some faces on those blank distant buildings.
A lot of additonal work went into the "finishing" stage. I've finished off the doors/windows, added the flowers, and added poles and trim to the umbrellas. I've also made some adjustment to the cast shadows beneath the umbrellas. For more information about this piece and other paintings, please visit www.jenniferyoung.com and www.jenniferyoung.com/blog.
