Jack Joyce at Rogue PDX during the 2001 Craft Brewers Conference with a bottle of the CBC commemorative beer Charlie 1891 -- a strong ale named in honor of Charlie Papazian . Charlie wrote the book on homebrewing that inspired John "more hops" Maier to become a homebrewer in 1981 (in order to brew a beer akin to Anchor Steam) . John was a member of the infamous Maltose Falcons club and won homebrewer of the year at the 1988 National Homebrewers Assoc conference. He studied brewing at the Siebel Institute in Chicago, and worked at Alaskan Brewing Co, where he had his hand in the Smoked Porter kettle before joining Rogue Ales as Brewmaster in 1989.
