Corporate Team Building Events in The Lake District. May 23rd 2013.

On Thursday, Nucleargraduates returned once again to attend a Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning Session with us at Church Beck, Coniston only a week after their previous session with a different group. Nucleargraduates value our sessions as a vehicle for personal & group development amongst new graduate apprentice recruits who are likely to be working together during their two year apprenticeship programme. Today was a tough session due to the cold but everyone worked well together and looked after each other resulting in success for everyone. Well done all!

Stag Events in The Lake District. May 18th 2013

Tom Jowitt booked a Stag Event in The Lake District with Kendal Mountaineering Services some time ago. Owing to the weather forecast we changed from the original plan of Rock climbing followed by Ghyll Scrambling to Ghyll Scrambling followed by Canadian Canoeing. The lads enjoyed a wet and active day in the Coniston area and despite the late start and wet conditions it was just what they wanted.

WEX Photographic from Norwich booked a Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning Session with us as a platform for doing a group test on waterproof & shockproof digital cameras. As Church Beck was too full we chose Stickle Ghyll In Langdale which worked very well as an alternative. The venue provided a challenging environment and a tough testing ground for any outdoor camera test. The Staff from WEX seemed to agree.

Stag Events in The Lake District. Church Beck, Coniston. May 5th 2013

James Fraser booked a ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning Session with Kendal Mountaineering Services as part of a stag event in The Lake District. Iain met the guys at Church Beck for a chilly session in the gorge although the lack of appreciable warmth was more than compensated for by the groups enthusiasm. The Sunshine came out just as we finished our session in Church Beck and the pint of beer in The Black Bull Inn & Hotel was appreciated by all - including Iain. Thanks guys!

Lake District based Navigation Skills Training Courses. Kentmere, April 27th & 28th 2013.

At the end of April, Kendal Mountaineering Services ran their first Mountain Navigation Skills Training course of 2013 with ten persons attending. Day one was spent on Green Quarter Fell near Staveley learning the basics of navigation with two persons attending a night navigation session in the Brunt Knott area that evening. Sunday was wet & cold with a strong westerly wind meaning that our usual foray on to Kentmere Pike & Harter Fell was out of the question. So, we returned to Green Quarter Fell from the north to continue our course. Everyone enjoyed the Navigation Skills Training Weekend and all leave with a much better understanding of map reading & navigation techniques. Well done everyone.

Stag Events in The Lake District. April 20th 2013.

Andrew Rothery booked a half day of Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning as part of a weekend Stag Event in The Lake District to celebrate his brother Luke's forthcoming marriage. The lads joined us in the afternoon for A wet and action packed session. The weather was fine although the water was a bit chilly, however, we still managed to do the whole of the Ghyll Scrambling ascent of Church Beck, the Miners Bridge Abseil and the Top Jumps. The lads enjoyed their session with Iain & Scott and we would like to wish Luke all the best for the future.

Scrambling in The Lake District. April 7th 2013

Sometimes we are able to get out for fun as well as for work! On this occasion, Iain was invited along by Neil Mackay to go scrambling and Neil wanted to get on some grade III terrain to help him prepared for a partial re-assessment of his Summer Guides Test. Iain suggested Low Water Beck on the Old Man of Coniston as fitting the bill and we linked this with a second scramble - Brinfell Rib (II). The weather was just fab, despite theire being loads of snow still around it was warm, there was no wind and the views were staggering. One of those perfect days in the outdoors!

Stag & Hen Events in The Lake District. Saturday April 6th 2013.

Phil Brooker booked a Stag Event with Kendal Mountaineering services for his brother Chris. The guys spent a weekend in Kendal and enjoyed an Abseiling and Ghyll Scrambling Session with us in the Coniston area. The weather was sunny, dry & cold as it has been for the last month but despite the colder than usual temperatures everyone enjoyed their session in Church Beck and the Abseiling. We would like to wish Chris all the very best for his forthcoming marriage and the future.

Easter Weekend Adventures in The Lake District & Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Whilst we had no bookings over the Easter Weekend, it was good to get out in the outdoors and have some adventures with our friends Charlotte & Stuart. We had a great day on Helvellyn in the snow on Saturday and introduced Charlotte to the delights of Caving on Sunday. The pair had a fantastic weekend with us and are spending a few more days in the area before returning to the south east. The weather has been sunny, cold and dry and is set to continue as such for a while yet.

Scottish Winter Mountaineering Training. March 12th - 14th 2013.

Returning client Mark Quinn contacted Iain from KMS wishing to book some mountain training in preparation for his forthcoming trip to 8000m peaks Gasherbrum I & II next Summer. Iain suggested that Mark should gain experience on long Scottish winter classic routes suggesting Daim Buttress on the West Face of Aonach Mor, a 500m III**, Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis - 600m of IV'3 and Green Gully - a classic intro to IV'3 water ice climbing as a finale. All went well on days one & two but after a late finish on Tower Ridge Mark was ready for slightly easier final day. So after a bit of a lie in we returned to Ben Nevis to climb Ledge Route II described as the finest outing of its grade on the mountain. Mark climbed well during all three days and left the course with improved confidence in his ability to climb and he climbed very well. Half day caving session in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. January 13, 2013

Eleanor Good booked a half day caving session in The Yorkshire Dales National Park with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services as a Christmas present for her boyfriend Matt. The pair stopped off on their way south from some winter mountaineering in Scotland and spent Sunday morning underground in Long Churns with Iain. Despite being cold, the weather was good and water levels low and Iain did his best to keep the pair dry. They both took to caving like fishes to water and can't wait to get underground again. Bravo!

Navigation Skills Training Courses in The Lake District. December 1st & 2nd 2012.

Adam Murfitt booked on to Kendal Mountaineering services final Navigation Skills Training course of 2012. The course was open to a maximum of eight persons but Adam was the only one to book. However, this meant he had the benefit of Iains undivided attention all weekend! We met at Wilfs Cafe at Staveley on both days and Iain took Adam to Green Quarter Fell on Day one and the Kentmere Pike area on day two. As can be seen from the photos, the weather was great all weekend after a damp start on the Saturday making driving conditions treacherous but conditions on the mountaintops interesting. Adam performed well over the weekend and goes away with many new skills which will allow him to venture on to the areas mountains in all conditions in confidence. Well done Adam.

Navigation Skills Training Courses in The Lake District. 10th & 11th November 2012.

Grant Geddes booked a bespoke Navigation Skills Training Course with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services to help him polish up his existing navigation skills. Iain took Grant to Green Quarter Fell on Saturday where we looked at all aspects of mountain navigation techniques before finishing off with a few hours of night navigation. Sunday was spent up on the ridge between Shipman Knotts and Harter Fell consolidating the techniques learnt the previous day. Grant leaves us with increased confidence in his ability to navigate in the mountains in all conditions. As can be seen from the photos the weather improved over the weekend. Sunday was truly glorious.

Mountaincraft Day, Langdale, The Lake District. November 9, 2012

Returning client Andrew Tranter fancied spending a day looking at aspects of our Mountaincraft Syllabus. He had already attended one of our two day Navigation Skills Training Courses in The Lake District earlier on in the year and was keen to try river crossing, and security on steep ground as well as revisiting some of the skills learnt on the mountain navigation weekend. Iain took Andrew to Langdale where we looked at river crossing in a rising Langdale Beck and Scout Crags where we tackled the subject of security on steep ground before heading up White Gill on a navigation leg. The weather today was vile as the photographs will testify however, Andrew thoroughly enjoyed his skills training day with Iain and his enthusiasm was certainly not tempered by the weather! Well done Andrew!

Caving & climbing in The Yorkshire Dales National Park. November 6th 2012.

Ian Durrant contacted Kendal Mountaineering services to book a half day of caving and a half day of climbing for himself & his partner Anna whilst on a visit to the Lake District from Portsmouth. The original plan had been to follow an introductory caving session in Long Churns with a climbing session at nearby Twistleton Scars. However, the eather on the day was dreich as the Scots would say - a cold southerly wind and drizzle meaning that outdoor climbing was.....out! We had a great session underground in Long Churns where the weather was better than on the surface followed by a session indoors at Inglesports fantastic climbing wall. The pair thoroughly enjoyed their session with Iain and are already talking about their next caving trip. Iain hopes to be able to get the pair climbing outside during their next visit.

Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning sessions in The Lake District. Church Beck. October 20th 2012.

Returning client Sunil Singh brought his partner & friends back to Church Beck for another ghyll scrambling & Canyoning session with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services. Everyone enjoyed a good session and the many challenges of abseiling waterfalls and jumping into pools which some clearly found more challenging than others. An exhilarating session without a doubt! Sunil & his partner hope to return next Summer to try the Esk Gorge. We look forward to seeing them then.

Guided Rock Climbing courses in The Lake District. Saturday 6th October 2012.

John Renshaw joined Iain for a day of guided rock climbing in The Lake District. Iain took john climbing on Routes 1 & 2 on Upper Scout Crag in Langdale followed by The Slabs Route one on White Ghyll Crag. Routes 1 & 2 on Upper Scout Crag are graded VDiff+ & VDiff respectively and are great introductory multi-pitch rock climbs. The Slabs Route 1 is a little harder at Severe grade but for John proved to be an appropriate progression. The weather on Saturday was the best it has been in the Lake District for many weeks and as a result there were a lot of climbers out making the most of the sunny conditions and enjoying the dry rock. John thoroughly enjoyed his guided rock climbing day with us.

Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning Session. Church Beck. Saturday 22nd September 2012.

Myles Holdsworth booked a Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning session for friends & family as part of a weekend birthday celebration. We met the party at Coniston and took them into Church Beck where the group split into mums & kids and blokes. Iain took the blokes around to the top jumps whilst Scott took the other party up to the lower chockstone slide. They all had a great time despite the late start and gathering dusk. Iain hopes that the rest of the weekend was just as successful.

Cuillin Ridge Traverse Trip September 2012. Friday. Sgurr a' Ghreadaidh & Sgurr a' Mhadaidh.

On the final day of our Cuillin Ridge traverse day people decided that they wanted an easier day than the previous one. Iain had, by now given the group a fair introduction to The Cuillin Ridge and all but two of the Munros on the ridge had been taken in as part of the trip. To bag the final two it was suggested that we should walk in to An Dorus from Coire a' Ghreadaidh from where it would be easy to gain the tops of both Munros. Today was a little chiller than Thursday and a few more showers were wetting the rock to the point where the Ghreadaidh/Mhadaidh traverse would have been quite hazardous so the option we chose was definitely the wisest decision.

Cuillin Ridge Traverse Trip, September 2012. Thursday, Sgurr Mhic Choinnich to Sgurr Na Banachdich.

Probably our best day out on this September 2012 Cuillin Ridge Traverse Trip. We started off from Glen Brittle in drizzle with high cloud over the ridge - not a promising start! Because of the wet it was decided to give Harts Ledge a miss and tackle Sgurr Mhic Choinnich from the Bealach Coire Lagan and then head up on to Sgurr Dearg. The weather began to clear whilst we were on Mhic Choinnich and had done so fully by the time we were ascending Sgurr Dearg. Was a traverse of the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the cards? definitely! With a light breeze, warmth & dry rock it was an opportunity not to be missed to get all four clients over this - one of the most famous places on the Cuillin Ridge and so get them over it Iain did! Once again, we had fantastic views that even extended as far west as St Kilda. Having completed our climbing antics on Sgurr Dearg we carried on to Sgurr na Banachdich taking the easy route down via Coire an Eich to the Glen Brittle Youth Hostel. What a day!

Days out on Duirinish & Minginish. Skye, September 2012.

During the Kendal Mountaineering Services September 2012 visit to the Isle of Skye we had two rest days during what was supposed to be the worst of the weeks weather. Certainly on the coast this was not the case. On Tuesday, Iain, Zoe & Carl had a run out over to Neist point on Duirinish and the following day, Iain, Les, Martin & Carl did a circuit from Fiskavaig to Talisker Bay and around the coast back to Fiskavaig. The views were truly stunning.

Cuillin Ridge Traverse Trip September 2012. Monday - Sgurr Nan Eag to Sgurr Alasdair.

The forecast for Monday indicated improving weather before it got wet again. So, Iain decided to take the party in to the southern end of the ridge from Glen Brittle via Coire a' Ghrunnda to start at Sgurr nan Eag. We had a few showers until early afternoon with occasional views extending very much further afield. By the time we were climbing the easy groove on Sgurr Alasdair the cloud decided to leave the ridge completely although only briefly. However, it cleared again during our descent to and walk out from Coire Lagan - a typical September day on Skye!

Cuillin Ridge Traverse Trip September 2012. Sunday. Sgurr Nan Gillean to Bruach Na Frith.

For our first day on this Cuillin Ridge Traverse Trip we chose to go to the north end of the ridge due to a strong westerly wind being forecast as well as showers. The forecast weather didn't really materialise - particularly the wind although it was showery on occasion. Although it was forecast for the cloud to be down over the ridge it remained largely clear all day and we were successful in completing an ascent of Sgurr nan Gillean via the west ridge, Am Bastier and Bruach Na Frith before walking out via Fionn Coire.

Kayliegh Jarvie booked a canyoning session with us months ago for herself & her sister Jacqui & cousin Natalie. On the day Church Beck was out of bounds due to high water levels. We ended up in Stickle Ghyll in Langdale which, whilst high, was a good level for the three to have some challenging wet fun. As you'll see from the pics, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Rock Climbing Skills Training Courses in The Lake District. Langdale 19th August 2012.

Iain joined Andrew, Helen & David for a rock climbing skills consolidation day on Upper Scout Crag in Langdale. The trio had already been on a number of climbing skills training courses and wanted some further coaching on their skills just to make sure they were doing things correctly. They had a good session with Iain and were able to add further to their already comprehensive understanding of safe rock climbing techniques. We wish them the best of luck on pursuit of this hobby and of course - safe climbing!

Matt Simpson attended one of our learning to lead rock climbing courses with his father Tim who had offered to act as Matts second throughout the course. It was a steep learning curve for Matt over the two days and an even steeper one for Tim! Both enjoyed the course and whilst the weather was a bit mixed we managed to cover everything Matt needs to know to get started climbing on outdoor rock. All he needs now is some equipment and some dry weather!!

We were also joined for part of the session by Piper the golden retriever as well who was clearly into her ghyll scrambling and swimming. The family enjoyed their session with Iain. Needless to say Piper did not partake in the canyoning descent!!

Esk Gorge Ghyll Scrambling session. July 28th 2012.

Terence Greene booked an all day Esk Gorge ghyll scrambling experience with Kendal Mountaineering Services for himself & his partner Emma. They had been itching to have a go at this for some time. The day was rather wetter than our previous excursions to the Esk Gorge meaning that we had to take extra care due to the higher water levels. It was a hardcore session but the pair thoroughly enjoyed their session with Iain.

Level II Caving Sessions in Easegill. Yorkshire Dales National Park. July 14th 2012.

Paul Odgen & Phil Bartlett booked a second caving session with Iain following their introductory caving session in Long Churns in May. This time they wanted something a little harder & a little longer so Iain took them around part of the famous Easegill system. It was a strenuous day out with us being underground for five hours but the guys loved the variation in challenge and the variation in scenery.

Outdoor activities in North Yorkshire. July 12th 2012.

Iain recently assisted another outdoor activity provider with their work in North Yorkshire by providing a bouldering & rock climbing session for a group at Brimham Rocks followed by abseiling & gorge walking sessions at nearby Howstean Gorge in Nidderdale. The children involved were from an international party visiting the UK through an organisation called Village Camps. Despite the wet weather all of the children had a great time and the sunshine appeared to dry us all out at the end of the afternoon.

Introductory Canadian Canoeing Sessions in The Lake District. July 3rd 2012.

Simon Kelly booked an introductory half day Canadian Canoeing Session for himself & his partner Claire as a birthday treat. Iain took the pair on Windermere from Waterhead, Ambleside. As well as teaching the pair skills necessary to handle a Canadian Canoe we had a trip up the River Brathay to introduce moving water skills and finished with a journey around the northern end of the lake. The weather was perfect for the session and both Simon & claire thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Ghyll scrambling sessions in The Lake District. Stickle Ghyll, June 29th 2012.

Kendal Mountaineering Services were asked to run a corporate session for a Manchester based PPI Claims company for one of their monthly days out. There had been exceptional rainfall during the previous 24 hours so the plan to go to Church Beck turned out to be impossible. However, en route to our alternative venue we realised that water levels in Langdale were not so high and Stickle Ghyll looked like a good option. It turned out to be an excellent choice of venue for this up for it bunch of adults who throughly enjoyed their session with Iain and Scott. We are hoping to see them again at some point as they have expressed interest in returning for another go!

Rhoz Cole booked a canyoning session with Kendal Mountaineering Services for herself, her sister Alexis and Alexis's partner Andy as part of a long weekend away in The Lake District. The weather was almost as wet as the previous Saturday and once again Church Beck was not an option. However, Redacre Gill proved to be at a most acceptable level and the trio had a relatively pleasant gill scrambling ascent with Iain at this venue and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Iain hopes that the rest of their time up here is as much fun!

Stag Events in The Lake District. Saturday 16th June 2012.

Mark Powell booked this stag day with Kendal Mountaineering Services and originally it was for a half day of canyoning in Church Beck followed by a half day of raft building on Coniston Water. However, on the day, the weather was truly hideous and the rain had been lashing down for almost 24 hours. All streams turned out to be raging torrents - even the alternative ghyll scrambling venue we used in Langdale. The morning session consisted of an abseil alternative at Hodge Close followed by a session in Redacre Gill and the lads drew the line at raftbuilding. We do hope that they enjoyed their day out with us but it was a most difficult day as the ghyll scrambling pictures testify.

Rock climbing in The Lake District. June 12th & 14th 2012.

During the last week Iain has been doing some freelance work for another provider in Borrowdale. He was also working with Neil Mackay who was keen to get some climbing in if the weather was good - and it was!. We spent an evening on Mortician (HVS 5a) on Black Crag and then half a day on Sergeant Crag Slabs in Langstrath where we climbed Revelation (VS), Lakeland Cragsman Terminator 2 ( both HVS 5a) and Between The Lines (E15b). The weather was good on both occasions and it was great to be climbing some decent routes.

Multi-activity days in The Lake District. June 12th & 13th 2012

Every year, St Michaels School from Walsall visits Borrowdale in The Lake District with around 30 primary children. Staying at Stonethwaite YHA they undertake a couple of days of activities which generally include canadian canoeing on Derwentwater, rock climbing at Shepherds Crag, hillwalking to Castle Crag and ghyll scrambling in Hause Gill at Seatoller. Iain has worked with these groups for a number of years and these photos are from his two days out with them. The weather was good, the children & staff had a great time and we look forward to seeing them agian next year.

Fundraising for The Oaklea Trust. Ullswater valley, Sunday 10th June 2012.

Iain worked freelance for another Lake District based activity provider on this challenge event which involved paddling the full length of Ullswater with three team tasks thrown in en route followed by an ascent of Helvellyn. Six teams from local organisations Armstrong Watson Chartered Accounts, HSBC Kendal, the Oaklea Trust, Carlisle Audi and Temple Heelis Solicitors, Kendal all took part in this event. Iain found himself alongside the winning team from Armstrong, Watson, Kendal for the entire day and on that note - well done to them for their hard work and for raising a substantial amount of funding for the Oaklea Trust. The weather was great for the first half of the day - flat calm conditions on Ullswater for the paddling but a bit of rain on Helvellyn. However, it could have been a lot worse!

Esk Gorge ghyll scrambling day. June 4th 2012

Gemma Athey & Nick Bishop booked a full day of ghyll scrambling in The Lake District with Kendal Mountaineering services. Iain took them to the Esk Gorge which at 2km long and 200m of ascent makes it the longest & highest gorge scrambling venue in The Lake District. There are loads of waterfalls to climb and many deep pools to jump into as you'll see looking through these photos and we spent a whole day in the area. Gemma & Nick thorougly enjoyed their all day ghyll scrambling session with us and whilst the forecast is not supposed to be as good for the rest of the day we hope they enjoy their time in the area.

Esk Gorge ghyll scrambling day. The Lake District, 29th May 2012.

On May 29th 2012, Iain Gallagher of Kendal Mountaineering Services and his partner Kirstin Everett decided to partake in some light refreshment in The Lake Districts Esk Gorge. This is the best ghyll scrambling & canyoning trip in The Lake District - being some 2kms in length with a height gain of 200m. Consequently, the entire time in the gorge is spent scrambling & climbing up waterfalls and swimming through many deep pools which, being enclosed in deep rocky clefts allow lots of opportunity for jumping in from heights anywhere from a few metres to 8! Iain tried the 8m jump with a bunch of local lads - it hurt! He won't be doing it with clients anyway! We had a fab wet time and spent the entire afternoon in the gorge emerging to a fab view of Scafell & Scafell Pike in the afternoon sun. The walk out was very pleasant too!

Improvised Rescue Skills Training in The Lake District. May 20th 2012.

Alastair Dunbar contacted Iain at Kendal Mountaineering Services about organising an Improvised Rescue Skills Training day for him whilst on a visit to The Lake District. Iain took Alastair to the limestone outcrop at Hutton Roff near Kirkby Lonsdale where together they looked at gear placements and equalising anchors with either slings or rope and discussing in what scenario either might be used. It was a beautiful day although time moved on fairly quickly. In the afternoon we looked at abseiling past a knot and changeover from abseil descent to prussiking before finishing off practising assisted and unassisted hoisting methods. Alastair picked up a lot of new skills and handy hints from Iain who wishes him well with his future climbing.

Navigation Skills Training Courses in The Lake District. May 15th & 16th 2012.

Evita Evans booked a two day Mountain Navigation Skills training Course with Iain From Kendal Mountaineering Services to be carried out whilst herself and her husband Rob enjoyed a week of hillwalking in the area away from their bsuy lives in London. They both learnt a lot of new skills and can now venture into the mountains with increased confidence in their ability and are bound to enjoy hillwalking even more as a result. The Mountain Navigation Skills training Course was carried out in the Kentmere area of the southern Lake District and the weather was dry, if not a little chilly at times.

Introductory caving sessions in The Yorkshire Dales National Park. Long Churns, May 12th 2012.

Paul Ogden booked an introductory caving session for himself & his mate Phil Bartlett. Phil was a little less than keen to experience caving due to a tale of someone else's less than satisfactory experience underground. It just goes to show that it is always worth taking those first steps underground with a qualified cave leader such as Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services. The pair had a great time underground and are already talking about their next session caving with Iain. Well done guys.

Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning sessions in The Lake District. May 9th 2012.

Lydia Clews booked a ghyll scrambling & canyoning session with Iain From Kendal Mountaineering Services whilst on a visit to The Lake District. The pair had a great time and as there were only three of us, it meant there was less hanging around getting cold! This is one important fact when booking your ghyll scrambling & canyoning session - the bigger the group, the more hanging around you'll have to do and being wet and uncomfortably cold is no fun - and we want you to enjoy your session! We are one of the few Lake District based outdoor activity providers who will work with a group of two but our business is all about providing bespoke courses and giving you what you want!

Multi-activity Stag Sessions in The Lake District. May 5th 2012.

On Saturday May 7th, Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services and his associate Scott Troughton were engaged to run a stag event for 18 lads helping a mate celebrate getting married. We spent the morning in Church Beck enjoying a ghyll scrambling session followed by an afternoon abseiling session at Hodge Close. Everyone had a fantastic time and we would like to take this opportunitiy to wish the stag every happiness in the future.

Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning sessions in The Lake District. May 3rd 2012

Nucleargraduates - one of our corporate clients from last year has returned in 2012 to undertake further ghyll scrambling & canyoning sessions with Kendal Mountaineering Services. The session is run as part of the organisations welcome workshops and are seen as a means to get successful applicants to the Nucleargraduates Scheme working together and as a means for them to get to know each other. We ran another successful session for Nucleargraduates and no doubt the apprentices will be talking about their session with us for a long time. Well done evryone who attended.

All day caving session in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. April 29th 2012.

Steven Finkill & Sally Stevens joined Iain in the Yorkshire Dales National Park for a full day of caving underground - the best place to be given the forecast! Strong winds battered the area and it was extremely cold too but the really heavy rains forecast also never materialised. Iain took the pair firstly to Long Churns - 3kms of popular passageways near Ribblehead and then just before lunch, a quick visit to the nearby Borrins Moor caves. After lunch we crossed to the opposite side of the valley and took a trip through Browgill cave before heading back to Ingleton - our initial meeting point for a well earned pint of tea and bacon & sausage butty in the famous Inglesport Cafe. We all had a great day out despite the weather.

Caving sessions in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. April 21st 2012.

Andrew Hatherley booked an introductory caving session in the Yorkshire Dales National Park with Kendal Mountaineering Services for himself & 7 of his mates as part of a stag event in the area. The weather was inclement, it was cold and showery as we headed underground with gradually rising water levels which could have caused problems. However, Iain kept an eye on these as we headed underground into the Long Churns cave system near Ribblehead. The party made it to the Cheese Press in Lower Long Churns before Iain decided it was prudent to leave this part of the cave. We finished the session by taking a walk upstream in Upper Long Churns. Everyone get fairly wet in what was, today, a challenging environment. Iain assures the party though that if they go caving again - it can only get better! Everyone enjoyed their caving experience despite the conditions and Iain hopes that they enjoyed the rest of their stag weekend. Well done!

Canyoning sessions in The Lake District. April 18th 2012

Niamh Carey contacted Kendal Mountaineering services to book a half day canyoning session for herself & her partner Neil whilst on holiday in The Lake District. Iain took the pair to Church Beck near Coniston and we all enjoyed the upward gorge walking ascent followed by the canyoning descent. Niamh has done this sort of thing before but found the session with us one of the most enjoyable she has ever had. The photos say it all!

Canyoning courses in The Lake District. April 14th 2012

The canyoning season has finally started here in The Lake District. Graham Hutley organised a canyoning session with Kendal Mountaineering Services as part of a stag weekend for his mate Martin. The group of five were kitted out well for the session after having enjoyed one of our soup & sandwich lunch options and then off we went. Iain made sure that they had an action packed afternoon and despite it being a bit chilly - everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Open Canoe Skills training course. April 2nd - 6th 2012.

Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services ran an Open Canoe Foundation Course for six cadets attending at Halton Training Camp near Lancaster between the 2nd & the 6th of April. The first two days were spent training the group in basic canoeing skills and these were carried out on Windermere & Coniston Water respectively. The second two days were spent journeying along the Lancaster Canal from Lancaster to Garstang covering 20km approx and including an overnight camp. The final morning was spent assessing the candidates abilities on the River Lune at Halton TC. All cadets successfully passed the course. Passing the Kayak foundation course will allow them to progress to their BCU 2 Star awards. The weather was mixed during the week with a return to winter conditions during Tuesday and strong winds on Wednesday. Everyone enjoyed the course despite the conditions.

Mountain Navigation Skills Training courses in The Lake District. March 31/April 1st 2012.

During the last weekend of March Kendal Mountaineering Services ran a Navigation skills training course in the Kentmere area of the Lake District. Four people attended this course. Saturday was spent in the Green Quarter Fell area and Sunday saw us up around Shipman Knotts. The weather over the weekend was dry and sunny but cold. Iain ran a night navigation session for one candidate around Brunt Knott on the Saturday night. Everyone had a great weekend and left with much improved map reading & navigational abilities

Mountain Navigation Skills Training Course in The Lake District. November 5th & 6th 2011.

Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services ran one of his renowned Navigation Skills Training courses in the Kentmere area of The Lake District during the weekend of November 5th & 6th. This happened to coincide nicely with a ridge of high pressure pushing in from the south east giving us fantastic clear warm days and excellent visibility of up to 50 miles in any direction - particularly on the Sunday. We had four people join us on this course although this unfortunately dropped to two on the Sunday. Areas used included Green Quarter Fell on Saturday and the Kentmere Horseshoe from Shipman Knotts as far as Harter Fell Summit on Sunday. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and gained a lot from attending this weekend Navigation Skills Training course. Well done!

Caving in The Yorkshire Dales National Park with Kendal Mountaineering Services. October 28th 2011.

Andrea Ubhi had originally booked a half day of caving plus a half day of rock climbing with us for herself & her three children Ellie, Matt & Nick.However, after an introductory caving session with Iain in Long Churns they all enjoyed it so much that they asked for more caving. Iain had anticipated this might happen (although a dry day it was really still a bit too cold for outdoor climbing) so he offered to take them down Calf Holes in the afternoon which entails a 15m lower and the use of a caving ladder & lifeline to get back out. Ellie didn't join us for the afternoon session but the others thoroughly enjoyed themselves and did extremely well throughout the day. Well done guys!

Moving water kayak skills training course in The Lake District. October 15th 2011

Teresa Middleton booked a day of moving water kayak skills training for herself & her partner Gareth. Iain took the pair on the middle Derwent - a grade I/II stretch of river running between Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake near Keswick in the northern Lake District. The weather was great and the river was at a reasonable level for two people who were new to the sport of moving water kayaking. Both Teresa & Gareth enjoyed their day out with Iain and learnt a great deal of new skills. It was a full on day for the pair but Iain hopes that they go on to take up the sport and enjoy river running as much as he does. Well done!

GEN II Teambuilding Event. Borrowdale, The Lake District. October 4th 2011

Kendal Mountaineering services were asked by GEN II Training Ltd to provide a teambuilding event for 32 apprentices who are part of the Nucleargraduates Scheme. They have all previously attended ghyll scrambling sessions with us as part of their induction to the Nucleargraduates Programme. The action packed programme on this day included a water based orienteering event on Derwentwater as well Rock Climbing, building a Tyrolean Traverse and Standalone tasks. The theme for the day was teamwork, leadership & communication within teams. The event was a success and everyone learned something new about their own capabilities when reacting to challenge or working as part of a team to achieve a goal. Well done!

Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning. Church Beck. Coniston. The Lake District

Chris Senior booked a half day ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning session with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services for himself and five of his mates whilst on a weekend break in The Lakes from Leeds. Both Chris and Oli had been before with Iain during April last year and enjoyed themselves so much they had decided to return with four new people. Unfortunately for the lads it is yet another wet weekend (and they are camping!) getting wet on the ghyll with Iain was par for the course tho and despite Church Beck being absolutely massive all six thoroughly enjoyed their ghyll session - even if some of the best bits had to be missed out due to the sheer volume of water. Iain reckons Church Beck was the biggest he's ever been in it today - anyway, we were seven strong lads who looked after each other well. Bravo!

Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning courses in The Lake District. Church Beck, Coniston. September 5th 2011

Laura Fogarty and her friend Isabelle joined Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services for a Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning session at Church Beck near Coniston. The conditions were certainly right for the activity - we are now into our third week of continuous wet weather so dry activities are off the menue at the moment and Church Beck was fairly full making it an exciting proposition. The pair thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the ghyll. Iain only wishes the weather had been better for the rest of their visit to the region.

Caving in The Yorkshire Dales with Kendal Mountaineering Services. Long Churns, August 23rd 2011

Andy Bushell booked a caving session for himself, his mate Rob and Rob's son Richard. Andy has been caving before, but it was a new experience for Rob and Richard. Iain took the three to Long Churns cave system in The Yorkshire Dales National Park near to Ribblehead where they had a thorough exploration of what was to be found underground.Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves during the session and conditions were perfect for their caving experience with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services.

Mountain scrambling skills training course in The Lake District. Langdale, 15th August 2011.

Chris Owen from Manchester booked a scrambling skills training course in The Lake District with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services. Iain took Chris to Tarn Crag in Langdale on day one to learn the basics and after rescheduling to avoid the rain on day two, the pair headed up Piked Howe on the opposite side of Stickle Ghyll for further learning and skills consolidation. Chris enjoyed his two days out with Iain and learned a lot on the process. Iain wishes him well with his quest to venture on to some of the better & more exhilarating ways to be found up the mountains of the UK.

Open Canoe Foundation course in The Lake District. August 8th - 12th 2011.

Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services still works for other people on occasion and this last week it was for the Cadet Centre for Adventurous Training. Based out of Halton Training Camp at Lancaster, Iain ran an Open Canoe Foundation Course for four cadets from around the country and his job was to get them up to two star standard. Three of the cadets were easily already at the standard so, in uctual fact, Iain spent quite a bit of time teaching solo open canoeing too and these guys ought to get their three star assessments booked. We had a great five days using Windermere, Coniston Water and Derwentwater and we also spent quite a bit of time on the upper River Derwent too before camping in Borrowdale on the Thursday evening. The weather changed massively mid-week from baking hot sunny days to wet stormy ones (well - Wednesday anyway). The four cadets had a fantastic time and learned loads. Iain enjoyed himselff too!

Michelle Howarth booked a half day Ghyll Scrambling & Canyoning session with Kendal Mountaineering Services as part of a weekend away with a bunch of mates all staying in Coniston. The group were a lively bunch, full of fun but keen to seek more in Church Beck. Iain and his associate Scott made sure that they got plenty of that during their afternoon session with us. Saturday the 6th of August was a busy day for Kendal Mountaineering services with 10 clients from GEN 11 Engineering joining us for a morning session in Church Beck. The water level was low but it was overcast making it difficult to get good pictures of the canyoning descent. The team thoroughly enjoyed their session with us which forms part of an induction weekend where everyone gets an opportunity to meet everyone that they will be working with during their two year apprenticeship as Nuclear Graduates.

Giggleswick School. Summer School, Outdoor Adventure programme. July 25th - 28th 2011

Iain was asked if he would agree to organise and run the Outdoor Adventure Programme this year for Giggleswick School. Giggleswick School is an independent boarding school for children aged 3 to 18 based near Settle in The Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Summer School is run for participants who may be thinking about joining Giggleswick School and is intended to give them a taste of the other side of boarding school life that involves extra-curricular activities. Iain had an am and a pm group each day and an assistant who was an ex-pupil from the school. On monday we made two trips to Penyghent, Tuesday involved rock climbing and abseiling at the crag in the school grounds, Wednesday saw us goirge walking at South Barkin gill in Barbondale and Thursday found us underground at Ribblehead. All in all, an exciting four days for the children and Iain really enjoyed being involved with this prestigious establishment.

Lindsi & David Missen booked a half day ghyll scrambling session with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services as part of their week long holiday in Cumbria. Iain took them to the little used, but very pleasant venue of Wren Gill in Longsleddale. It certainly made a change from Iain's usual destination of Church Beck near Coniston - and unlike Church Beck, we hardly saw another person during the whole session! Ghyll scrambling & canyoning session. Church Beck, Coniston. July 9th 2011.

Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services ran a second ghyll scrambling session at Church Beck near Coniston for GEN II Engineering and delegates joining their Nuclear Apprentices programme. The session was run as part of an induction weekend and the focus of the ghyll scrambling session was to be to be about teamwork. Everyone in the group had to work together to overcome the challenges set by Iain and his associate - Garry, in Church Beck. We believe the session was successful in meeting the requirements laid out by GEN II - everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and doubtless left with hightened feelings of self confidence and self esteem. No doubt their session with us will be talked about for some time to come!

Torben Schnieder and Chrystele Scariot booked a whole day of ghyll scrambling with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services whilst on a weekend visit from London. Iain took the pair to Stickle Ghyll in Great Langdale in the morning and Church Beck at Coniston in the afternoon. It was a full on day for the pair who were up here in The Lake District to celebrate Chrystele's birthday and today was their main day out. The weather was beautiful - warm & sunny - just right for ghyll scrambling in the low water levels we found in both ghylls and this made for refreshing yet comfortable sessions in each ghyll.. Ghyll Scrambling in The Lake District. Church Beck, Coniston, June 27th 2011

Simon Gregory booked this ghyll scrambling session for himself and some of his colleagues & family whilst on a three day visit to The Lake District. They had no idea what they had let themselves in for but, in contrast to Iain's session in Church Beck on Saturday, it couldn't have been better. It was a lovely warm day with low water levels in the ghyll meaning that Iain was able to provide the party with the full "Kendal Mountaineering Services Church Beck experience". Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their combined ghyll scrambling & canyoning experience and felt fully refreshed and exhilarated at the end. Obviously, they all enjoyed their session with Iain.

Rock Climbing in The Lake District. Hutton Roof, June 26th 2011

Richard Taylor booked a beginner's rock climbing session for his mate Nasir and friends as part of a stag weekend away here in The Lake District. The weather had been unpredictable, with heavy showers on the Saturday night and Iain figured there wouldn't be much dry rock in the national park. So, he chose to take the guys to Hutton Roof - a little known but good venue between the Lake District & Yorkshire Dales National Park. He figured that here, it might be dry. It was; and stayed so all day giving the guys a chance to climb six routes and do an abseil too. Richard ans his mates thoroughly enjoyed their beginners rock climbing with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services.

Ghyll Scrambling half day session in The Lake District. June 25th 2011.

Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services ran a "full on" ghyll scrambling session for twelve people from a west cumbrian business involved with recruiting graduates for various aspects of the nuclear power industry. The ghyll scrambling session was part of a team building weekend aimed at bringing everyone together. After the previous night's rain, Church Beck was rather full meaning that everyone had to work together to make progress up the ghyll. Mountain Navigation Skills Training Weekend, The Lake District, June 18th & 19th 2011.

Linda Richards & Colin Gardner contacted Iain from Kendal Mountaineering Services to see if he could arrange a navigation skills training course for them. Both really enjoy hill walking and wanted to get to grips with map reading & navigation to give them confidence to go further & higher in to the mountains and Iain's weekend course really helped to improve their map reading skills and boost their confidence. We spent our weekend on the hills beyond Staveley - Green Quarter Fell on Saturday and Kentmere Pike & Harter Fell on Sunday. The weather was kind to us given the forecast and cloud on Sunday on the higher fells only added to the challenge of mountain navigation. Both Linda & Colin thoroughly enjoyed their weekend with Iain.

Lake District guided hillwalking day. Scafell Pike, June 15th 2011.

Lily Butler, holidaying in The Lake District for the first time, fancied attempting the area's (and in fact - England's) highest summit - Scafell Pike (3210feet) and was advised to go with Lake District Mountain Guide - Iain Gallagher from Kendal Mountaineering Services. The forecast wasn't great; and initially we got wet, but then it dried up and as we climbed higher, so the cloud continued to rise above our heads (the luck of the Irish as Lily said!). Iain took Lily on a circular route - ascending to Esk Hause via Grains Gill, on to the Summit and returning via The Corridoor Route and Styhead Pass. We did get some views at times and at least the day was largely dry. Lily enjoyed her day out with Iain and hopes to return to The Lake District again soon.

Multi-activity weekend. May 28th & 29th 2011.

Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services worked, during the weekend, with several groups of young people from Winsford Academy in Cheshire during their visit to The Lake District. The group were staying at one of the areas residential centres and were involved in a programme of ghyll scrambling, kayaking & sailing. Not being a sailing instructor, Iain was only involved in the ghyll scrambling & kayaking. All photos were taken on the Saturday and were taken in Church beck which was rather full and on Coniston Water. All of the pupils enjoyed their weekend in The Lake District.

OM Skye meet. Thursday & Friday, May 19th & 20th 2011.

The shots from these two days were firstly from our cottage during the eveing meal provided by one of our party. Everyone is expected to provide a meal for averyone else as part of the deal. Thursday saw us off up the west ridge of Sgurr Nan Gillean and Am Bastier via Coire a Bastier in conditions far better than forecast making for an excellent mountaineering day out. Friday's shots show the ridge with a mantle of snow making any serious terrain out of the question. After we had waited for the hailstorm (c/w with thunder & lightning) to stop, an ascent was made of Bruach Na Frithe via Fionn Coire. It was windy & wintry on the way up and down but - another good day out. Despite the weather this week everyone enjoyed the 7th Outdoors Magic Skye Meet to have been organised by Kendal Mountaineering Services. The trip was definitely another success.

OM Skye meet. Monday & Tuesday 16th & 17th May 2011

This year, Iain was joined by Outdoors Magic members Sophia Norris, Mike Merchant, Rob Jones and Ray Trevitt for an "atmospheric" week on Skye. The weather was frequently unsettled and led to a very wet Monday on Sgurr Dearg but this was followed by a much better Tuesday doing the round of the three most southerly Munros on the Cuillin Ridge. We had a very early start (05:45) to make the most of Tuesday and managed to include a traverse of the famous Thearlaich Dubh Gap - just before the weather broke again. On Wednesday, the rain lashed the ridge whilst a gale raged around the tops. One of our party chose a solo ascent of Sgurr Na Banachdich whilst the others went off to the Quirang. Iain had a day off!

Dan Broughton's stag day. Coniston, The Lake district. May 7th 2011

Dan Broughton booked his stag day with Kendal Mountaineering Services for himself and 21 of his mates. They had asked for a half day of ghyll scrambling to be followed by a raft building session after a pub lunch at the Black Bull Hotel. It was a rather wet day weather-wise - not that this mattered to the lads! Apart from lunchtime, they were wet all day. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves - important when it is a special day such as this and we were pleased to deliver the sessions. Dan works for the Kendal based web design company SCK Webworks who are responsible for maintaining the KMS website. We are pleased to be associated with SCK Webworks and would like to thank Dan for his business. We wish Dan and his future wife all the very best for their wedding and a long, prosperous and happy future together.

Canadian canoeing half day session in the Lake District. Windermere, April 27th 2011.

Gary Fullbrook booked a half day Canadian Canoe session with Kendal Mountaineering Services as part of his honeymoon, for family and friends. They all enjoyed a fun and action packed session on Windermere with Iain and were certainly entertaining. It was a great session - thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Canoeing & Kayaking sessions in the Lake District. April 26, 2011.

Jenny, George & Bethany booked a canoeing & kayaking session with Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services after having had a recommendation from another local business. Whilst holidaying over from the North East, the family had been out scrambling in the Lake District Mountains and had been to a number of tourist attractions including Ucando canoe hire at Ambleside. They had enjoyed that session so decided to get some instruction. They thoroughly enjoyed their session with Iain and Jenny is quite keen to join a canoeing club when they get back home. Good effort folks!

Guided Lake District Mountain walking. Easter weekend, April 2011

Susanna Freeman & partner Martin travelled from London to Windermere by train for their Easter weekend break and fancied getting to know some of the Lake District mountains better. They booked Iain from Kendal Mountaineering services to provide them with a guided Lake District mountain walking experience and ascended Scafell Pike and Blencathra via Sharp Edge during the two days. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience provided by Iain and look forward to returning again soon

ML Refresher Day, Shap Fells, The Lake District, April 21st 2011

Shaun Barbar contacted Iain at Kendal Mountaineering services to book an ML Refresher day. This navigation skills coaching day was done in the Shap Fells area north west of the A6 in a relatively remote area - rich in landforms but devoid of man made features - ideal terrain in which to prepare for the standard of navigation required to pass a Summer Mountainwalking Leader Award. Shaun performed at the standard to Iain's mind; and whilst there were some learning points, Iain considers he should do well at assessment. Best of Luck Shaun!
