Outdoors Magic Navigation & snowholing event. Cairngorms Plateau, February 28th & March 1st, 2011.
Kendal Mountaineering services ran their second Outdoors Magic 2 day winter Navigation skills training and snowholing event on Cairngorm plateau last Monday & Tuesday. The weather was truly fantastic throughout and we navigated in to the heart of the plateau to spend our snowholing night in a hanging corrie overlooking Loch Etchachan. During the night it was bitterly cold outside with a strong wind blowing from the Garbh Uisge Mor valley which filled in the snowhole entrances. We all dug out the next morning to more blue sky and only a light breeze. We continued to the top of Ben Macdhui - at 1309M, the second highest summit in the UK, where the views were stunning and incredibly - it was warm and still. After continuing back via Lochan Bhuidhe, the west flank of Cairn Lochain and the middle ridge of Lurcher's Crag, we were back at the cars at 3pm. OM Members Gary, Kelvin & Mark thoroughly enjoyed the event and learned a lot about map reading & navigation techniques in the process.
