The 2011 HASTAC V digital humanities conference was held on December 1-3, 2011, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. It was organized by the Institute for the Humanities (University of Michigan) together with some other academic entities such as School of Information where I study. As an employee at the institute, I coordinated many aspects of this event, including the proposal process, schedule and other things.

I turned 34 and used this as an excuse to invite some people over. I also cleaned my place and took some photos. We ate some cookies and tiramisu cake, watched kitten videos on YouTube and chatted. That's the kind of party I like.

Michigan vs. Minnesota

My first ever American football game - or any other game in any sports (excluding one Finnish ice hockey match in 2000)... Michigan Stadium is one of the largest in the world and it was indeed impressive. Impressive was also Michigan Wolverines' play - they beat Minnesota 58-0.

Morning Thunderstorm

One morning everything seemed red. A thunderstorm was approaching and the sun was rising at the same time! I snapped some photos of the surroundings of my home before 7 AM. Of course, photos are nothing compared to the real thing!

Finn Camp Juhannus 2011

In June 2011 I had a chance to celebrate the Finnish Midsummer (juhannus) with Detroit area Finns (or actually descendants of Finnish immigrants). They also had a car show there, and naturally the big bonfire (kokko).

Biking from Northwood to Ypsilanti is quite an experience. Through Gallup Park, along Huron River (Geddes Pond), there are plenty of great photography opportunities that are difficult to miss - so the trip ends up taking more time than expected!

Detroit Electronic Music Festival 2011

Movement is the name of Detroit Electronic Music Festival, the largest event of its kind in the world. With about 40 000 visitors per day (it lasts for three days + preparty) and five stages, there is a lot happening there all the time. Detroit is, of course, famous for its Motown sound and underground techno music, the latter laying foundations to this culture event.

Argo Park

Pictures from and around Argo Park, Ann Arbor. This is an area where the first industries of Ann Arbor were founded and the associated dam, dam pon and mill race are from that era. Nowadays the area around the mill race is Argo Park or Argo Nature Area. The pond which the dam creates is called Argo Pond and it has a lot of recreational use; also the University of Michigan Men's Club Rowing Team uses it for practice.

Toledo

During the Spring Break in March, 2011, I rented a car and drove to Toledo, OH. Saturday was pretty rainy and cloudy but on Sunday I was able to snap some nice photos. The downtown Toledo was peaceful (unlike the previous evening) and architecture interesting.

Michigan Central Station

On March 4, 2011, I stopped by the Michigan Central Station, the famous landmark of Detroit. It has stood abandoned since 1988 and despite many initiatives to turn it into something useful, it is still a derelict, facing demolition. It is also one of the icons of the urban decay of Detroit. At the same time, one can only wonder at the building's architecture and beautiful decorations and imagine the days when this was indeed a place of meetings, arrivals, departures and rendezvous.

North Campus

Photos from around North Campus in Ann Arbor. North Campus includes not only the engineering centers but there are also some libraries, many residential halls and apartments and parks there. I live in Northwood II apartments. The old district of Northside (along Broadway Street) is quite near, with some beautiful views down towards the city.

Finnish Independence Day 2010

I attended the Finnish Independence Day gala ball at Finnish Culture Association Culture Center, Farmington Hills, MI, USA and took some photos. The dinner was really nice and the people very friendly. The presentation by Dr. Carl Rahkonen was extremely captivating. I bought some Finnish candy from the gift shop as well.

Kronodoc Spring 2010 Kickoff

The kickoff session for the 2011 spring season of Kronodoc Oy was held at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (Finavia being one of the customers of the company). The day included a bus tour around the platform area and a visit to the air traffic control center and the new international terminal. A nice way to start a year.

Malta

I spent a week in Malta (stayed at friends' place), seeing sights, walking around, eating food and the usual tourist stuff. The weather was cooperating and I was able to take many sunny photos around the island. I also found some geocaches. The fortress city of Mdina was fantastic, as was the capital, Valletta.

I spent June, 2001 travelling around Europe with my cousin Heidi. We had Interrail tickets valid all over Europe so we went to Sweden, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Vatican, Hungary, Austria and Czech Republic.
