Opening of the Gandhi, King, Ikeda: A Legacy of Building Peace Exhibit

Cdpeace is Reviving Local Traditional Music with Youths

Cdpeace is Reviving Local Traditional Music with Youths Money has been raised by Logan McGillivray in Canada for cdpeace to buy local traditionally made musical instrument for children to use at the Listen to the Children Resource Center which is under construction at the cdpeace Head Quarter, Mayagba. The construction of the build will be completed this summer. The attached photos and video are students at R. C. School, Mayagba beating the drums and other instruments that have been collected. The Head Teacher at Mayagba told me that one of the effects of the war is young people are losing local traditional knowledge and for years now, students have not been exposed to playing traditional music. In a sense, Logan is helping the schools to revive a worthwhile tradition that is being lost. cdpeace hope to get all the musical instruments of the 13 major tribes in Sierra Leone for the center. Launching the Peace Education Curriculum in Sierra Leone

The Centre for Development and Peace Education (cdpeace) teaming up with the Sierra Leone Teacher's Union (SLTU) and the Canadian Teacher’s Federation (CTF) to launch the Peace Education Curriculum in Sierra Leone. Dr.Thomas Mark Turay of cdpeace was appointed as the Course Director who presented the Draft Draft Peace Education Curriculum to the Education Minister on July 06, 2010.

Jenika Adolph and Tanya Cerovic's cdpeace Sierra Leone Photos

Jenika Adolph and Tanya Cerovic are Teacher Candidates form our Partner Queen’s University, in Canada. They were in Sierra Leone for three weeks between March and April 2010. They spent their time in Sierra Leone working with cdpeace communities, schools, teachers and students. They also helped to raise funds for our Teachers Scholarship Program to send a teacher to collage. Thank you Jenika and Tanya for you time and contributions to the work of cdpeace.

Listen to the Children Multi-Purpose Centre Construction, Dec. 2009

Listen to the Children Multi-Purpose Centre Construction has started. In December 2009, The Youths (10 to 18 years old) at Mayagba Community took the responsibility of clearing the constuction site for the multi-purpose Centre. These youths have decided to play an active role on the construction since this center is going to be their space at cdpeace. We will be posting more pictures as the construction progresses.

JILL'S KIDS RESOURCE CENTRE: Mabarie/Makonkorie, Gbonkolenken Chiefdom

Jill died in 2009 of Cancer. Her wish was to contribute to the work of cdpeace in Sierra Leone especially in the education of young people. The family and friends of Jill decided to start a foundation to hournor her wishes. The communities in Gbonkolenken Chiefdom: Makonkorie, Mabarie, Fothaneh and Mathombo met with cdpeace Co-founders in December 2009 to decide on which land to donate for the construction of Jill's Kids Resource Centre that will serve these communities. A piece of land has been donated. Plans for the construction are going on. Please stay connected.

LISTEN TO THE CHILDREN 2009 CONTANER AT CDPEACE SIERRA LEONE

Logan's 2009 container arrived in November 2009 full of furniture and equipments for the furnishing of the Listen to the Children Multi-purpose center that is going to be built at the cdpeace Training Centre Mayagba, Sierra Leone. 12 years old Logan has raised about 75% of the money for the construction. The building site has been cleared and the construction is on the way.

2009 cdpeace Hosted the Learning Alliance Meetting at Mapaki and Mayagba

cdpeace hosted the Learning Alliance meeting on July 2nd, 2009. The Learning Alliance is made up of NGOs that are working in the Northern Province, Sierra Leone, West Africa. cdpeace presented it work in encoraging Youth Leadership engagement in Canada and Sierra Leone especially the work of 11 years Logan MacGillivary who founded the "Listen to the Children" movement. By his example, he is encouraging Youths in Canada and in Sierra Leone to take action and get involved in do positive things in their communities.

2009 Makeni Day (Lunch at Mapaki)

The President of Sierra Leone organized a special day to thank the local and international NGOs for their contributions in helping to rebuild country after the 11 years of war. This function was held at Makeni, the home town of the President. To recognize rural development, all the NGOs had their lunch at Mapaki, cdpeace's operating communities. cdpeace visitors from Green Solutions and Newport Sport Management from Canada were attended this function.

2008 Old Mathombo Community School

The former school was burnt during the war. This structures are what the community could afford to use as a school so that the children in this community could continue to go to school. The teacher were also community teachers. In 2007, cdpeace intervened to find support for this community.

Dr. Peace 2008 International Peace Day

Dr. Peace 2008 International Peace Day The 2008 International Peace Day was celebrated by the Coady International Institute at St. Francis Xavier University in honor of "Dr. Peace" the nick name given to Thomas Turay by the students and staff at Coady. In September 2008, Thomas Turay resigned form is full-time position at Coady International Institute/St. Francis Xavier University where he was an Instructor and Assistant Professor teaching Peace Education, Gender Awareness to community development leaders around the globe. He was also supervising the Community Development students in the Masters of Adult Education. He decided to devote his full time to cdpeace in Sierra Leone but will continue to work closely with Coady in Sierra Leone and in Canada.

In 2009 a 40 ft. container was sent for the new Mathombo School. In 2008 10 yr. Old Logan sent a 40 ft. contaner to Sierra Leone. In 2007 a 20 ft. medical supplies and 20 ft. school contaner was sent to Sierra Leone.
